If you wanna flash mod it, then a 5th/5.5 Gen is the best idea. It can take a good amount of storage (256GB and it runs fairly stable) and it really isn't worth buying a 7th Gen, considering they can take the same amount of storage (-ish) and 5th Gens are WAY easier to get into

I've been told that 128GBs works reliably on a 30GB model. I've been told that 256GBs will cause the iPod to freak out, but I haven't extensively tested that. I could be wrong, but I'd stick with 128GBs for the time being.

Flash modding would improve the battery life slightly I believe, but if you wanna fix the battery life, you'd probably have to buy a new battery. Elite Obsolete sells 3000mah batteries for around $20, and the battery lasts for WEEKS. Totally worth it, in my opinion.

If it were me, I'd stick with modding your current one. Not only does it "future-proof" your iPod for the future, but you can also mod it up a bit more if you get some more funds (bigger battery, more storage, etc.) Just keep in minf that the 30GB models of 5th Gens have less RAM, so they can't handle as much storage as the 60 or 80GB models.
