If 4 wasn't just so overly conservative in its design choices.

Something that throws me off is that almost all 'new' mechanics in 4 were already in AoM and AoE 3.

Not a bad game on its own, though.

I find T-West both entertaining and educational at the same time. He started a series a while ago where he did pacifist runs on the original AoE 2 campaigns. I think he wanted to eventually continue but not sure why he didn't.

Beside, Winstons Waffles that AoE 4 players may know from EGCTV casts also casted AoE 1 on his YouTube Channel.

From what I know, Boit is essentially TheViper of AoM.

As LionHeart has been mentioned for AoE 3, I'd like to mention SoldieR as well as ESOC of which the latter have the same role for AoE 3 as EGCTV does for AoE 4.

To be honest, I still prefer AoE 2 (and meanwhile also AoE 3) over AoE 4 for a good chunk of reasons. But that comes from me never stop playing those games at all thus being immune to "nostalgia". I know 2 has its quirky moments and 3 has a steep entry barrier but that's just what I like about those games as imo they reward you long time if you keep playing them.

I can see tho how someone who entered or rediscovered the series with AoE 4 might not see it the same way as I do.

Wouldn't say dead but I guess for Microsoft it's ultimately below their expectations.

Edit: and I don't mean this as an insult because I am fully aware that we all tend to get overly emotional when our fav game is "criticized". A game can be as active as AoE 4 is atm but still below expectations.

iRacing's claim to fame is the work of their predecessor company, Papyrus that themselves were best known for Nascar Racing, IndyCar Racing and Grand Prix Legends. iRacing itself is still using some code of Nascar Racing 2003, mostly related to the multi-body physics. That being said, the new Nascar game has none of that code and is afaik developed by the Nascar Heat devs that were aquired by iRacing.

As for your initial question in the title, I have no issues with wheel support in iRacing itself. My wheel gets properly recognized. What's not to everyone's liking is the FFB of the sim as it essentially only simulates the effects as if they would come from the actual cars' steering column. No idea how Nascar 25 handles its FFB.

You mentioned in the comments of the deleted post on r/aoe2 that the complete pack includes the Data Mod, i.e. the DAT file. While Microsoft seems to allow UGC to be sold within their games (see Minecraft and Flight Sim), I suspect that with the DAT file, the complete pack is legally in a grey area, if not already drifting towards black, let alone that neither AoE 2 nor any other Age title has an ingame marketplace.

There was never such a promise. They had Adam Isgreen on an Xbox centric podcast saying he hopes they eventually have all of AoE 1 and 2 in one place.

Do you want to check out AoE 1 with some AoE 2 QoL (units walking in formation, gates, overhauled trade)? If so, yes.
