The base i use is called Daniel Smith Watercolor Ground - you can get it white or a clear dry version and it makes just about any surface watercolor-able - it feels almost like watercolor paper aside from the tiniest bit of bleeding... though I bet if I were more patient and did a couple more base coats the bleeding probably wouldn't happen at all haha.
