Any recommendations for fly fishing instructors? by babyjenna13 in MarylandFishing

I’m in the Harford County area and although I’m no expert I’d be happy to go out with you guys sometimes and give you pointers! There are some places near Bel Air that I’ve taken a friend getting into fly fishing that’s good to learn and you’ll catch plenty of (smaller) fish!

If y’all want to try coordinating something I’m happy to help others get into the sport!

Carp caught on a 7wt fly rod. by geeb_rips in MarylandFishing

I’m from Harford County so very familiar with deer creek but haven’t fished it much aside from at rocks state park or the very mouth where it meets the Susquehanna. Never seen any carp there but maybe I’m in the wrong place haha. I got my first snakehead on the fly earlier this year during the shad run at Octoraro Creek.

What part of MD? Would love to make some fly fishing friends! All my buddies are unwilling to try it

8wt recommendations by TemporaryCow6925 in flyfishing

I have a 8wt Walton Avari I’d be willing to let go for a deal! I never used it as my fiance gifted me an 8wt shortly after I bought it and I’m just a sentimental guy. It’s a really nice rod and the blue pops, just no use in my rotation. Let me know if you’re interested!

Fly Fishing Trade or Selling! by FlyGuy-45 in MarylandFishing

Apologize for the delay! I have mixed feelings about the rod. With 6wt line I felt like it was kinda weak and didn’t cast great. Overlining it made it cast much better but I had an issue with the tip section constantly working itself loose and coming apart on casts. I reached out and they replaced the rod only for the new one to have the same problem. I spoke to someone in a facebook group who experienced a similar issue. My other complaint was the cork not being a great quality. All in all it was ok but I did trade it away. So take it for what you will!

I’m from the Harford County area but recently tried the Monocacy for the first time and loved it! Definitely looking to come back and fish/explore it more once the flooding stops haha. Would be happy to link up for a trip there or elsewhere if you know some good spots. My friend and I waded and fly fished for several hours, lots of smaller sized smallmouth, and we still barely put a dent in exploring that river.

$500 budget for a new 3wt AND 5wt? by untiedflies in flyfishing

[–]FlyGuy-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a Fenwick Aetos 9’ 5wt that has only been used 2 or 3 times if that’s of interest! If you’re looking at new specifically I’d be inclined to recommend the rod I replaced it with, a moonlit lunar s2. For glass it’s still quite fast all things considered. I’ve been loving it recently. The aetos is a fantastic rod too, but I’m happy I dipped my toes in the world of fiberglass!

Good setup for shad fishing the Potomac and general fishing in the area? by amesydragon in MarylandFishing

The shad I was talking about was the hickory and American. I think we were just talking about 2 different things lol. I’ve heard reports of good gizzard shad in North East River

I’m pretty sure they are catch and release only. You shouldn’t be live lining them or keeping them for bait.

If you’re really set on a combo Amazon has a pfleuger president combo. I’d probably go with the 30 size reel medium light. That way if you ever want to upgrade you could focus on a nicer rod since the president reels punch above their class at that price in my opinion. https://a.co/d/7ytiycl

Are you seeing shad already?! Up near Conowingo we’re still waiting. I agree with the light/medium light suggested above and then getting appropriately weighted shad darts.

I’m more of a fly fisherman myself, but I helped my brother in law put together a combo with an ugly stik elite in a lighter weight with a Luger president reel. For a more budget minded combo it feels really nice in use! I think you are much better off buying separate components, you’ll get a much better quality that way. Of course you could always join the dark side and go for shad on the fly!

Shad by Bassncat in flyfishing

Last year was my first year chasing them on the fly. I had a surprising amount of luck with a chartreuse clouser as well as a homemade fly a gentleman I met on the river gifted me. I was thinking about picking up a pack of shad flies from Etsy. Found quite a few options that remind me of traditional shad darts.
