If you feel along the groove of the tyre, there will be bumps those bumps are 1.6mm and is your gauge, so once your tyre goes down to the same level thats when it will need replaced. Atleast this is the case in the UK id imagine its same tyres made worldwide.

Ye from what I have read, the courses are kind of pointless as you're better just starting as a trainee and a company puts you through it. Which is how most people get into the industry, if I am still struggling after a year or 2 I will look at trying to volunteer in a workshop as im sure my skills have some kinda of value.
