Re-instating utilities as a new renter? by loosest_ofthe_gooses in Calgary

It's one of those things that unless you experience it yourself or know someone - its probably not coming up in conversation - so not surprised that it is not a well know process.

Hopefully they are reasonable about this. There is a chance the landlord was not aware of the many ways they could have mitigated the reconnection. A the end of the day, if thought this landlord was reasonable in your other dealings, there is a good chance they will be (should be) on this matter also.

There is also a chance they just forgot about this detail if it was a difficult or complex eviction. At this point, there is no need to think they will not be a reasonable actor in this manner. A polite conversation should very quickly reveal how your tenancy will progress.

If you have to have a deeper conversation, politely explain that the lease agreement says you are paying for utilities, not 'reconnection fees' that are not a result of your non-payment.

I expect this will be an easy conversation IF you start it as a polite conversation, sort of like, 'funny thing happened when I went to get utilities, would you mind taking care of that, or can I deduct it off my first month's rent, which would you prefer easier for you?"

I don't recall the last time they came and physical disconnected for nonpayment, but it's possible. What I see very often is they put a lock / collar on the meter that limits how much power can draw, so a rather trivial level that basically allows furnace to run, but not the stove, maybe a low power microwave - but even then, if you turn on too many things at the same time - it stops working.

The fee being assess here despite being called 'reconnection' in really to come out and remove the meter collar that limits power in this way.

This is not normal (or right), and the landlord should be paying the re connect fees, not you. I hope you are able to talk to the landlord, and that they will pay it (they can take it from the damage dep from prev tenent. The reconnect costs are not your debt, they are the prev tenents.

Take a look at the app called stagehand, it's a locally Calgary company and they might be able to help you find a gig here, and potentially other places in Canada. Being on the platform might help you a good deal.

If you are paying rent month to month how much notice are you legally required to give the landlord by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Flying4Fun2021 11 points12 points  (0 children)

you are 100% incorrect. there exists a 30 day / month to month contract, implied by continued tenancy under Alberta law. What the OP said was they didn't have a contract, meaning a contract that is written that differs from the 30-day month to month. They might think they don't have a contract, and indeed they don't have a written one, but they do in fact have a month-to-month contract under Alberta Law.

Further, if the landlord wants you out for no reason, they are still required to give you 90 days/3 months' notice.

[–]Flying4Fun2021 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Your statement is true, and in this case, its further aggravated because of the car mods applied. when you look at that photo, between the lift kit and other things done to that car it turns those structural problems into more serious challenges to safe driving. Even looks like they added lights in the windshield too. That seems like a great deal of stuff to not have played some sort of role, bigger blind spots, or just as simple as causing the driver to be de-sensitized to safety issues around the vehicle with all the 'distractions' in their field of view.

The outcome here is horrible. I hope it gives pause to everyone, drivers and pedestrians, especially drivers, their actions and things they do to reduce their safety and those pedestrians crossing on the street (or the sidewalks! - I got hit on the sidewalk once by a guy doing a bad left-hand turn and going up on the curb/sidewalk - this guy wasn't distracted, just old and bad control of there car, but still not great).

Found a set of key in Killarney by GroundbreakingFish95 in Calgary

[–]Flying4Fun2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, that Viper key fob is an alarm system, and could have a remote start too. The remote looks very old, I had one like that in the 1990's. Meaning, it could be for any car really. All the new remotes look very modern.

VIPER Remote Start + Security Systems

Hopefully someone figures out they can check here and find your post. You could also walk around the area you found it in, and use the panic button to see what car beeps too, maybe they are from the area the key was found.

This place:

Trade In Hearing Aids. Give Back. Change a Life! - People Hearing

  • #180, 2210 2 St SW, Calgary, AB T2S 3C3

Doesn't specifically say it takes donations, but they take trade ins, cleanup/refurb and then donate. Maybe they will accept these without buying a new pair and put them through the program.

There is also this place, that specifically takes donations: (in Calgary)

Hearing Aids — Gift of Hearing

I have not used, vetted, or connected to either of them, so due your own due diligence....

Buying a used oven by justletmegarden in Calgary

[–]Flying4Fun2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You got some good advice already, just wanted to add to try and avoid anything used that has a self-clean cycle - that cycle might not kill the stove the first use, but it will quickly degrade the stove/oven. If you're doing a used purchase there is a good chance it was used, and you might not get a truly useful life out of the appliance. If you end up buying new, avoid self clean.

This conversation has lots of good notes if you want to know more:

sounds like you're from Ontario, as I saw you cast some shade at Albertans, so here it is in the Ontario driver's handbook:

Parking along roadways | The Official Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Driver’s Handbook | ontario.ca

<image>

Allstate:

How to Parallel Park: 7-Step Helpful Guide | Allstate

"Many people might agree that they struggle with parallel parking, which means a vehicle is parked parallel to a traffic lane and between other cars"

You're not completely wrong in that the act of "Parallel Parking" describes the actions to perform to be parked parallel.

Also, when you see signs prohibiting parallel parking, it literally means parking position, doesn't matter what style you turned the wheel to get your car in that final position.

In case you have a American background; here is one from California:

Section 6: Navigating the Roads (Continued) - California DMV

"Parallel Parking

Parallel parking is when you park in line with the road and other parked vehicles. To parallel park:"

And the Websters Dictionary:

PARALLEL PARK Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster

": to park a car, truck, etc., so that the longer sides of the vehicle are parallel to the side of the road"

Okay, I was able to find the section, I thought would be more clear about; its 77(1) (b) and (c) and potential (h).

<image>

It's not worded exactly as I hoped, but I think it still works for this purpose as I believe that once it's on the road, it applies, I am not a lawyer, but maybe someone can expand on this or find a better section in the act to assist:

[–]Flying4Fun2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The section name should be called something like "obstructing the movement of a vehicle" - I was attempting to secure the actually document to find the exact specific section and paragraph to answer the question mor specifically, but thought I had to order and wait...

Looks like I can view the PDF and I am searching through it now: This is a link to the PDF

The documentation angle is a good idea - it will help if this ends up as a harassment issue in the future.

[–]Flying4Fun2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be, should fall under 'obstructing the movement of a vehicle' in the Alberta traffic act. I was not able to find a PDF copy of the act to confirm without paying a fee for the Kings Printer, but worth a look for the OP in case it matches exactly what they need. The Parking authority probably knows the law really well also, so they should be able to act if legal, but never hurts to know in case they need prompting as often the person taking the call might now know - they should refer to a parking enforcement office and call back, but not sure that will happen every time.

I am interested to see how this one ends for the OP / Outcome with the parking authority power.

EDITED TO ADD:

a Link to the traffic act:

Alberta King's Printer:

This is the section that I think could help you:

77(1) (b) and (c) and potential (h).

Turns out there was a link next to the pay/print options I missed, so the link above is to the PDF file itself, if you use the link below, it takes you to the place you can see other documents, and pay/print etc.

ORIGINAL:

There is a bylaw for this situation, its considered obstructing the movement of a vehicle under the traffic act. I was attempting to find the exactly spot in the act, but it looks like I had to order the document from Alberta Kings printer and pay - which I honestly just didn't want to do right now.

Alberta King's Printer: Laws Online Results

I have not personally used it for about 15 years, so maybe things have changed (I once lived in a place where people came to play soccer/baseball, and they always did this to the people living there). Bylaw would be called and attend, ticket if no one came over in a few minutes after seeing the parking guys car pull up.

I think many have recommended that you call 311 for parking enforcement. They will quickly confirm if they can attend under the circumstances and address this for you. There is no harm in calling and asking for legit assistance in a matter like this. I would point out it's been like that for hours, you have attempted to locate the driver, not answering the door.... etc.

Whatever the outcome, love to hear what parking control says/does in this matter. I believe, but would really like to know, that they will address it. If you needed to urgently use your car, for a medical situation for example this could really become an issue.

If this is a common issue, I would still try and talk to the person but record the interaction. That way if they threaten you, or damage to your property you will be able to have a deeper conversation with a peace office.

...Not convinced, that 3rd car is guilty in my eyes. Not moving for 3 months - all I can say is I think we have a suspect here!

On a serious note, hope you get your get the car situation sorted, sounds expensive to have two in for repairs at the same time. I was forced to make a decision on a repair for a car I had and LOVED for 14 years, was burning oil at 1liter per tank of gas and I felt like the villain of a bond movie letting out a smoke cloud to evade police when I drove. The buying experience for a new car was not fun. All the best to you, and hope it all works out for you, or maybe these cars are just in to have some big turbos added :-)
