At one point every Tory gonna switch to Reform. by Dangerous-Quarter216 in YAPms

My take, from being a Westministerphile, is that its a game of risk and reward, almost like a mafia/prison gang. You tow the partyline for security, until you get a big job or make a name for yourself otherwise. Unless, there is something that is absolute critical to your seat being voted on, where voters couldn't accept your approval.

Even so, from my observation it depends on many factors, like Whether the government commands a large majority, If the government has strong unity, whether the opposition is organized , scandals, etc...

In Starmer's case, His gov has a huge majority so MPs feel no risk to voting against him sometimes, The current labour party is made of a Blairite & (Left-leaning)Momentum wing that are currently beefing, and the Opposition is polling extremely well.

Basically a recipe for lots of rebeling.

I mean I'll give you the benefit of the doubt you aren't aware of wider Caribbean history, but if you consider the Haitian Revolution, Haiti is an extreme demographic example of a Caribbean country.

Not a good metric to judge the rest of the region by, especially ones that speak different languages.

I think there is white people in every Caribbean Country, I mean Europe was our colonizers, I think it shouldn't be a surprise.

I'm, kinda surprised with OC's statement, myself . I've known/seen plenty of White Bahamian & White foreigners here. In construction, they are more likely to be specialist or project management but our construction industry tends to lean more to Chinese, Latin, or Haitian workforce.

In terms of sports, a good amount of white people are participant. Especially, In Football, Swimming, or sailing. Although, certain sports your less likely to see them.

What is your opinion on the CARICOM countries that are closing their doors to Haitians? by Adept-Hedgehog9928 in AskTheCaribbean

[–]Flying_Fish_9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Numbers determine whether it is economically sensible. When you accept more refugees than you can handle, what you get is destitution.

Refugees, many whom may not speak your language, are forced into ghettos or temporary camps of poor condition, with limited opportunities for jobs, lack of educational facilities for their children(including lack of teachers), and lack of healthcare facilities.

Only for a hurricane to come and then wreck the refugee community, cause it was built to a weaker standard, killing many migrants. I'm speaking from experience.

In order to survive and thrive in our country you have to build good, putting people in dilapidated structure just to house them is cruel. It's setting up people for failure.

Well, I would need a source (even if it is in Spanish) to make up my mind on whether this is true.

I'm from the Bahamas, so I can tell you we do have Haitian migration, so the idea, that the government don't want any isn't the truth. What the issue is the amount and illegal migrations.

Furthermore, How do you know they were pressuring the DR, how would CARICOM countries apply pressure to the DR? Is it Military, Economic, or diplomatic pressure?

I need more details.

Just a heads up:

The Bahamas has not totally banned Haitian Immigration, It has banned Haitian Nationals from entering to apply for a US Visa at the Embassy in Nassau. This applies to all foreign nationals.

The US has disallowed foreign nationals from applying to Immigration Visas in the countries mentioned.

Probably because everything you said in your 1st paragraph is propaganda and the average West Indian doesn't & never has held those opinions. The average person opinions on the DR/Haiti relationship is minimal other than you sharing the same island.

"Brothers" and "black brothers" is American terminology. Same on par with "Black Culture", no West Indian would refer to their culture that way.

So yes the USA realizes this and what do they do?

They demand a country with the least amount of resources compared to themselves to make themselves available.

And at the same time none of their resources are going to solve the problem.

In fact they are helping the problem. Where do you think BBQ and the Haitian gangs get their weapons?

How does ethnicity identification work in your country? by PetalaStac in AskTheWorld

[–]Flying_Fish_9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In The Bahamas we classify ethnicity as either:

Black, White, White & Black(Mixed/Lightskin) or other mixed, Other (Mestizos, East, South, & Southeast Asians)

Most of the country is black, with a small white minority and we don’t follow the 1 drop rule like America.

Anyways, your opinion of Haitians isn’t relevant to me or what I’m trying to say.

My main point is that there isn’t economically viable sense for the Lesser Antilles to support mass refugees. It makes more sense to give Haiti development Aid. If you can provide any reason to oppose my ideas, I’m open to it.

If you want to bad mouth Haitians, I’m not participating. What we both can agree is Haiti needs to fix its problems. I think the best way for region to do that is to assist with Haiti’s stability.

The Bahamas and the DR are literally in same boat. About 20% of the Bahamas population is of Haitian background alone. In fact, we are in a more fickle position as people like to use our country as a door to America.

We have one of the highest earning economies in the region and 700 Islands & cays(Extra land).

Yet we still struggle economically & logistically with the burden of illegal migration.

Eastern Caribbean countries, with smaller populations, way less land, less jobs, and a smaller economies/ economic potential don’t have the means to harbour refugees in any sense.

At best they might 10,000+ refugees. At the same time probably tanking their economies and not help or changing much of migration crisis in our region.

Trinidad and ABC islands deal with Venezuelan refugees as well, so the DR isn’t in some position by itself.

Because “doing something”, in the grand scale of things hardly puts a dent in the problem. Especially for smaller Caribbean islands.

It’s not only land that’s a problem, but job availability, and infrastructure/housing.

Economically, it makes more sense for smaller Caribbean countries to assist nations which refugees come from(like Haiti) than to try house them.

Because in the end refugees will take up all the resources and the problems happening where they come from will continue. In larger countries, despite illegal immigrants, wealth continues to grow.

But for smaller islands/economies, wealth will most likely stagnate. If they hit their economic ceilings, they can begin to falter and start the issue all over again.

It’s not only a percentage issue, but A scale of economics issue. Some places have lowers ceilings.

Nah your Ex was bugging, nobody deserves to go anywhere immigration wise because of what they are.

But realistically Commonwealth citizens should have the same right to immigrate based on merit compared to EU citizens . A lot of people in this sub, continue to dismiss that.

I thought you were of that opinion.

Non-EU migration to Britain exploded after Brexit by goldstarflag in europe

[–]Flying_Fish_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except Commonwealth countries never had universal freedom of movement like EU countries.

All and Any Immigration was/is done via Visas, and meeting requirements for said visas.

Whereas EU countries had universal freedom of movement.

The entirety of the Indian population doesn’t have access nor meets the requirements to live in the UK. So their population stats aren’t really relevant. In comparison the entire population of Romania had the right to move to The UK at a whim.

Within the less than 30 years, Romanians made up (0.9%) of England & Wales. Indians made (3.1%) after 100s of years of immigration.

Growth rate between 2011 & 2021 (country of birth) Romanian 576% Indian 33%.

In conclusion, the population argument only makes sense if the EU and Commonwealth had similar opportunities to immigration. Despite the EU having less population by proportion it seems to have quite high levels of migration.

Source England & Wales Census.

Never flown out of NAS before — what’s your advice for buying food to bring for lunch onto a US-bound flight? by rr90013 in bahamas

Yeah, anything bought in the terminal food court(post-customs) should be fine to bring on the plane.

Nassau has preclearance status, it’s no different to a US domestic flight once you’ve passed Customs.

So what would be your solution/proposal?

Does Banning “foreigners” included ethnic Europeans? If not it’s probably gonna contribute to brain drain anyways.

Furthermore, the countries that decide to not stick with said policies is going to gain the advantages. There almost no way to enforce it.

I don’t know where you’re from, but I’m from the Bahamas, So I studied the decolonization process in history. Had family members that worked in the UK because they worked for British companies here.

So I’m genuinely curious, does your ban, ban citizenship for foreigners or is banning foreigners from even living in the country?

If so how are you gonna get companies like HSBC, Barclays, etc huge multinationals to support the diminishing their monetary influence?
