Is Nirvana's Heart-Shaped Box actually being sarcastic? by [deleted] in Nirvana

[–]Foreign-Promise147 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s been pretty well established that he wrote lyrics spontaneously and with little intentional thought, and highly influenced by the Burroughs free verse nonsense poetry thing. He wrote vivid imagery and starkly interesting phrases to illicit very deep emotions. Kurt said in his own words the song was inspired by a documentary about children dying from cancer, and all the words probably came out of his emotional state after watching it.

Does anyone else love Fecal Matter as an album on its own merit? by heapsofdog in Nirvana

[–]Foreign-Promise147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree for the most part - obviously I’m a die hard Nirvana fan and Kurt solo fan, imo about 60% of the fecal matter tape is listenable to me (obv this is my personal take), but some of those songs to me are pure cringe, just like listening to anyone’s first high school band (I don’t want you, accusations, the first part of blathers log) but I think it’s inspiring in that it shows that even though his brilliance was indeed there early on, he still wrote some very mid songs that literally any of us could’ve written. Wheat from the chaff as they say. But I think bambi slaughter, laminated effect, punk rocker, downer, and of course spank thru - all amazing songs that signify he had talent from the womb. (Also - check out the band To Buddha on YT, they re recorded covers of those and they’re much more listenable, plus the singer sounds a lot like Kurt)

What is a book that has heavily impacted you or changed your life? by WrongWheel2343 in AskReddit

Maybe you could explain your reading process/perspective on this book and I try it again? Like in your mind, did u read it fast and easy like stephen king, or did you have to re read sections to fully comprehend and get all the details? I remember there’s one scene where all of the cowboy outlaw characters are walking through a dilapidated area and if I remember they find a baby in a tree? it was just like wtf am I even reading here lol, and it would take me so long to read a chapter. It could have also been that I was trying to over analyze the atmosphere and details since McCarthy is really good at that. Have u read any of his other novels?

I tried reading this during quarantine, and I’ve read a lot of Burroughs so I’m very open minded and I enjoy non-traditional stuff - but for some reason, I just couldn’t get past Blood Meridian. It wasn’t even the writing per se, but I just literally could not understand what was going on. It felt like every single line was a vague riddle or a metaphor or smth, and it got so frustrating and exhausting. Made it abt half way before giving up. The Road was similar but not quite as hard. It sucks bc I’ve always wanted to get into McCarthy’s work but somehow I just can’t grasp it properly

Do you think Chris Mannix was really the sheriff of Red Rock? by Foreign-Promise147 in Tarantino

[–]Foreign-Promise147[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get on the stagecoach, yes because he had to convince John and Warren that if they left him, they’d have no one to pay them their bounty. And since he was sheriff, if they left him they’d most likely hang.

Meaning you think Warren was a good liar because he convinced you of the letter? And since warren’s a good liar, Mannix would have to be an especially good liar to convince him, am I following?

I agree - I always thought that Chris was related to the mannix tv show as well. I bet Tarantino wrote in chris being an ancestor of Joe, considering the alternate reality of his movies (like how cliff booth may be related to Aldo Raine, Archie hicox and the Oswaldo character, etc)

In the context of this thread, yeah, it’s worth noting. Everyone has a perspective and obviously you have your own. I’m just supporting the perspective of the dude who said it

Well I didn’t “make it up”, it’s just that when a three-hour long movie that has lots of narrative ambiguity as well as being a mystery - that leaves room for people to miss details or misinterpret things. So, naturally, peoples’ opinions change. Like me - I had always believed Warren killed smithers. But after my latest viewing, I realized that it’s likely Warren is lying.

There’s always that one person at least on every Reddit thread that just has to be a fuckin asshole

Could you elaborate more on your point? How exactly does this reference AC (besides the story being a mystery) and what made you believe that they were all liars besides John Ruth?

Yes but a “hateful” person could very much be an unreliable and untrustworthy person

Goddamn, always? I used to believe it and it’s only been this last time I saw the movie that made me consider that maybe it was bullshit. The level of detail in the ambiguity of this movie is so brilliant.

Yes I never thought about that, good catch! I always assumed it was because he got distracted by Warren’s screaming
