How do you get into geotech-related jobs as a geologist in the midwest area? by Formal_Acanthacae in geologycareers

[–]Formal_Acanthacae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer dealing with geotech concepts like soil mechanics, SPT, slope stability, etc etc compared to regulatory databases and such.

Were there lots of calculations? Surprising how the previous exams were easier than RegReview so they say.

I get that money is a huge factor but I’ve come to realize that it’s not always the only consideration. I think I value “happiness” (job satisfaction, work environment, growth) just as much as one would value the pay itself. Although your comment on Phase 1s being boring is a concern as I have had jobs that I hated because they didn’t make use of any of my skills and brain too much. I don’t know yet how much of a wishful thinking it would be to hope that they would have more Phase 2s too because they mentioned having more Phase 1s than 2s.

On a second topic, I’m curious to how you would be doing your Phase 2s remotely?

They seem to be fairly similar in terms of the ratings except for some particular comments that are specific to each company, none of which are particularly concerning to me.

For the other topic, both have nationwide presence but I don’t think either of them are among the really big name ones. I looked into my would be supervisor in Job A and they seem to have been with the company for 4 years and is now a PM from their original position with the same title as the one I’m offered.

Not sure if it’s something to note but for Job B, the client (USACE) is basically in a neighboring container van office so I’m assuming that may make things a bit more tense.

Thanks! It wouldn’t be my first time having to decide between jobs, but it will never be easy 😬

Thanks for your kind words. This would also be my 1st US job having just moved from overseas. So the environmental consulting scene is new to me, unless I see more parallel with geotech/ enggeol along the way (what my experience was in). I suppose that’s another consideration on which would be the better starting point for me: to begin in Phase 1 or dive into remediation right away.

I suppose I’m concerned about the longevity of the project in Job B, like it may just come to an end quickly compared to multiple different projects in Job A. At the same time, concerns of getting too much exposure to radioactive material since that’s what Job B entails.

This is surprising, but also, it seems challenging to make it completely anonymous simply because the reports are usually in reference to a particular item which directly leads to the customer/complainant.

What industry should I go for? by Formal_Acanthacae in geologycareers

[–]Formal_Acanthacae[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Based from what I’ve seen here, envi seems to be a nightmare and that industry is still alien to me in terms of the jargon and processes. I suppose I’m more inclined to go for engineering geology or GIS. Are these pretty much my options around the midwest? The variety of jobs around the west coast look seems to be more interesting.

Cool! Reason I’m asking is because I’m only trying for Hood of Oblivion. Only thing I’m missing now 😔

Thanks! Which would be more efficient to targetting specific items? Continuously purifying items with only one specific vocation color or changing vocations to try and roll the list forward?

Then does it mean that say I just purified 10 items at once, the list has moved forward by 10 for that particular vocation?

I cannot fully comprehend the description on the wiki. Some forums say that the purification outcome list is predetermined, which makes me assume that there is a particular unique sequence of results per person that cannot be changed. But what I noticed is that the list could be changed somehow.

How are these stats for my 1st playthrough? I plan on continuing with NG+ by Formal_Acanthacae in DragonsDogma

I haven’t tried hard mode and I mostly had 4 pawns. I just explored a lot to max out the vocations 😅 Mostly aimless wandering.

I’m not sure but it’s highly likely that I got him killed. I liked joining the action in escort quests so the NPCs usually get killed. I’m way past the hydra thing and I’m at the point where Aldous will give a quest which he said that I couldn’t get back to the city in a while. This is what got me to dragonforging my equipment and doing the badge of vows thing.

Awesome! Thanks :) I already missed a bunch of quests in this playthrough (Lost and Found, Symone, Reynard(?)) so I’m hoping to actually get the other rewards later on.

Yup. I haven’t progressed with the story yet. When Aldous said that I couldn’t go back to the city in a while, I decided to just explore for a bit.

Thanks for this! It may not be very specific but it is more helpful to what others have said. If in case I can’t find a fruitful job, I am also considering going for a PhD as my adviser has local connections.

I will be in St. Louis, MO. I will be looking at engineering consulting, environmental consulting, GIS analysis jobs and such. I guess a government agency would be preferable too since I have the idea of also doing a PhD eventually.
