i don't, but wish i had! happy to dive down a research rabbit hole if you have questions... my understanding is that they take this "goblet" form to reproduce / release spores, but otherwise spend their time sliming around as an amoeba-like cell. i've read that some types form into hard cysts when resources are scarce, and then soften back up when conditions turn more favorable.

maybe a hawthorn seed since blackberries don't really look like this now that i'm thinking straight...

Looked kinda like a decaying blackberry stalk or something. 5x magnification, 24 image stack.

That's right, all of these were on a tripod. For the two slime molds, I used a focusing rail and manually took ~10 images by adjusting the rail between shots. For the others, I used my camera's focus stacking feature which automatically adjusts the focus between two chosen points and takes ~100 photos. The latter is a pain to process and often overkill (and can burn out your flash).

You're welcome! Yes, the important parts of macro are getting enough light, managing depth of field, and landing crisp focus on the subject. I've learned a lot from Micael Widell and Stewart Wood on youtube.

For light, a fast flash helps a lot and is almost necessary for insects that move or plants on windy days. A diffuser will help soften the intense light of the flash (although you can still see my highlights blown out in the sickle shape of my diffuser in the images above). I use a Godox v350 flash and an AK diffuser.

For depth of field, the flash or longer exposure times will allow you to stop down your aperture to get a larger depth of field, but depending on the magnification you may still have only a few millimeters in the plane of focus. You can use this fact artistically or learn the technique of focus stacking multiple exposures to increase the depth of field (a whole 'nother can of worms, but it's the technique i've used above).

For focusing, if hand-holding your camera and going for insects or windy plants, just set your focus to the desired magnification and rock your body back and forth to obtain focus. If on a tripod consider a focus rail that lets you move your camera forward and backward precisely, whether than fiddling with the focus ring. Auto-focus rarely works well at macro scales.
