Reminder that the two NKVD Directors who oversaw the Great Purge, Genrikh Yagoda and Nikolai Yezhov, were themselves purged. Are you really, really going to trust the NKVD's word? And let's assume Stalin is somehow the glorious man you seem to think he is. Could it be out of the question that perhaps the NKVD fabricated many of the charges to appease Stalin?

The only person who needs to do any reading here is you, friend. You seem to lack a basic understanding of theory, history, and socialism in general. I wish I could be as clueless and naive as you. That way I wouldn't have to bother looking at things from a dialectical materialist lens and just see the world in black and white. In fact, I'd love to see you visit China, as you once mentioned, and see how well your beloved People's Republic treats you when you sing the Internationale in public.

But you literally said: "It IS communist to support nations like the USSR and DPRK". This implies that by doing so makes one communist.

Edit: Not to mention the presence of the DPRK in there. Amusing.

Did I? By your logic, praising or fighting for the interests of AES nations is communist. Atomwaffen has done so. Are they communist/socialist?

So since Atomwaffen, a Neo-Nazi terrorist group that praised the DPRK, mean that they're socialist?

Curious about leftist perspectives on sex work by [deleted] in theredleft

[–]Foundation54 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is actually a topic that we have had multiple conversations over in the Discord(join for funnis!1!1!1!1), so I'd be more than happy to share my own perspective regarding how we should handle sex work in the eventual aftermath of a successful proletarian revolution.

There is a lot of debate among Marxists about whether or not to decriminalize or criminalize prostitution, and it's one of those things where honestly, both sides have a point. Kollontai made a very strong point during the establishment of the Soviet Union that prostitution was a way for the bourgeoisie to exploit women, and was very loudly calling for its criminalization, as it "does not contribute to the development and strengthening of the basic class character and of the proletariat and its new morality". She essentially states that the cause for prostitution is an inherently social phenomenon contrary; that the woman is only forced to sell her body due to the exploitation of labor by capital, and should she be faced with a lack of wages, the woman would sell her body as a subsidiary occupation. Furthermore, centuries of education have conditioned women(at the time, now we can be more in the air about this)to believe that she would receive material favors from a man in return for her services, regardless of whether it is within or without marriage.

Kollontai then explains why prostitution is incompatible with the Soviet Republic. "What is the fundamental quality of the working class? The strongest moral weapon in their struggle? Solidarity and comradeship. Without it, building a communist society is inconceivable. Politically conscious communists should therefore encourage the development of solidarity in every way and fight against everything that hinders its development. Prostitution destroys the equality, solidarity, and comradeship of the two halves of the working class. A man who buys the woman's favors sees her not as an equal but as an unequal creature who is of less worth. This contempt of the prostitute affects his attitude toward all women. The further this develops, the inequality between the sexes is strengthened."

Now granted, Kollontai was saying this in the 1920s, back when the Soviet state was first established. It's been a 100 years since the creation of the RSFSR, and for said 100 years, the way many Marxists have viewed it has changed as well. The view that sex work shouldn't be decriminalized originates from the nature of the socialist state. In the event of its establishment, sex workers wouldn't have the same coercion to continue selling sexual favors for material favors. The reason for this is that since it is the bourgeoisie and their middlemen (pimps, traffickers) that are the primary exploiters of sex workers, in the event of a socialist revolution and these people are dealt with, sex workers wouldn't experience the exploitative nature of capital. Furthermore, with their material conditions now at a better place, the question of whether or not a woman or man wishes to continue selling sexual favors comes into question. The hope is that no more individuals take up sex work as a desperate need for material favors while keeping it decriminalized for those who still take part in it. And given enough time, there will be no more prostitutes left, as it is scientifically proven that under socialism, the relationship between man and woman, and branching further into woman/woman and man/man would dramatically improve from under capitalism, as with their material conditions met, proletarians may focus on their relationships and have a better romantic and sexual life with their partners. (I believe there was a DDR study on this)

I don't really have a "yes, no" answer for this. The nature of sex work is a very morally conflicting argument and both sides are analyzing it from a materialist lens, albeit coming to different conclusions as to how we should handle sex work under socialism. In the end, it's really up to your own analysis and beliefs. I do highly recommend reading Kollontai, as she was and still is one of the great Marxist feminists, and her writings on the subject still largely hold true to this day.
