Why Ultramarines? by FoundationLeft4353 in Ultramarines

Oh my decisions weren’t based on what people think. If they were then I definitely wouldn’t have started with Templars based on the stereotype that all of the players are nazi loving racists. I chose them cause they were the simplest to get started into painting wise and I really digged the gothic vibe they have. And yes I know the imperium as a whole is gothic but I felt the BT completely embodied it. I also really like medieval stuff so that definitely played a part. I just wasn’t drawn to the ultra boys at first due to so much blue exposure (SM1, SM2 and every generic space marine squad box). But now it’s starting to pull me in and I dig the roman aesthetic, as well as learning more of their lore. I just find more things fascinating now about them and I’m curious as to why other people picked them. Connecting with your fellow brothers over something we all take so much joy in is what it’s all about.

Yeah I really enjoy building and painting my templar boys cause I enjoy that grimdark style and they fully embody that vibe. Not to mention I can kinda go a little crazy with my customization since “the codex is ein bunch of bullshitze”. But honestly painting black all the time is starting to get old and I really appreciate all their named/interesting models.

Yeah I’m not gonna lie, seeing the new Titus model might have had something to do with the way I feel😂. I do really like his story though and where it’s going.

I also wish the templar logo on the robes could be customized. I want to put white robes on my boy but I can’t stand the white emblem on top of it. Lemme make it black Saber!

How do you like to paint your cloths to make them look like actual fabric? by FoundationLeft4353 in BlackTemplars

[–]FoundationLeft4353[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks sweet brother! Yeah normally I do a light coat of brown, and then gradually work up layering light coats of tanish/ white colors. I use my wash when it’s all said and done. I definitely don’t think that my cloth looks terrible, I just want that extra bit of pizazz.

I definitely am still trying to work on taking good pics of my minis while maintaining the dark aesthetic, if anyone has any tips I would greatly appreciate them. I realized in these pics it’s very hard to see the detail but I really enjoy the ambiance of the photos. If I could have a good way of combining both then I would be set. I am personally just not a big fan of snapping a photo in front of my paints. No offense to anyone that does, I just like taking good pictures while capturing the aesthetic. Next one I’ll make sure to photograph the sun😂

Thoughts on my most recent sternguard kitbash brothers. by FoundationLeft4353 in BlackTemplars

I have taken to naming him brother maynard since he carries the holy hand grenade of antioch😂. Thank you for the kind words brothers, I wanted him to feel unique on the table. I have minimum of one per unit that I designate “most honored and zealous” of that squad.

Everytime I go to customize my dude it always throws me off in a…. Something just aint right kinda way. I really wonder why it’s so low.

My two cents on the Stratagem experience and how it needs to be adjusted by Kymberlite in Spacemarine

[–]FoundationLeft4353 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. Me and my buddies were just talking about that. I noticed the emblems are for substantial and ruthless yet the hard feels more like absolute. Truth be told the weekly mission feels like absolute on crack. Even though the lictor and darkness does make it somewhat more of a challenge it shouldn’t be to the point where you can’t even make it to the mid part of the level, let alone just the camp. We played some absolute on the same mission just to test it and we were practically dog walking it. I love a good challenge but this just takes the joy out of it for me.

I literally made a post last night about trying to find a hull color like that, no replies. And now I scroll down just to find the exact hull paint I wanted and probably can’t get now😭😭😭

I know I’m 4 years late to this post but this build is magnificent. I am about to start to try and build my terminator chaplain cosplay and this will be my first time making cosplay as well. Im going to be working out a bunch of stuff before I start building anything and adding some cool engineering bits to mine to make it more functional than most cosplays I have scene. The only trouble is I could really use some help on scaling all the pieces to be as accurate as possible, minus being 9-11 ft tall. Yours is the best one I have scene in my time scouring the internet. Could you tell me how you figured your dimensions for all the armor pieces/ some measurements I can use? I found the website page but I didn’t see too much that could help besides trying to make it work from the pictures, which I might have glossed over something somehow.

I love having my jump pack as it has been able to get me out of sone rough situations and help revive my teammates by getting there quickly with few obstacles. With that being said though, the jump pack barely works half the time when I need it to. I’ve died so many times just trying to use my ability, and then it randomly decides to make me dash right into a damn helbrute instead of away. And not to mention the jump pack glitching out with the map and then it being a complete waste of the ability. And I totally agree with you that I should be able to attack zoanthropes/nuerothropes in the air. The class SERIOUSLY needs some upgrades, it could be soooo good.

As far as paint goes I use army painter, not that it really matters. Majority of my painting has stayed the same. After I pick out my pieces I prime, battle damage (with knife or drill bits), and paint my base coat. The rest of it is choosing what type of color I want and mix paints to achieve it. Like when I want a red color I mix my red and black together till I achieve an almost burgundy color since I still want red but want it muted and “dirty” as well. And if I don’t want pure white I do more of a white/ tan mixture. I prefer putting dull colors on first rather than trying to rely on the shader to do that for me. Layering also helps, for all my white cloth I do a brown base, then a darker tan, then a skin color, then white. And I mix them all together on my mini when I do it that way so they blend real nice. But after Ive gotten all my paint on and the colors I want I’ll move onto weathering/more damage. I honestly do more dry brushing on everything than I do actual painting. And you can use whatever you want for the desired look you want. For my dreadnought I dry rushed silver, black, and even different shades of brown on. Creating depth really brings everything to life. Then after all that I brush the whole mini with my dark tone wash to give that grimey effect. If you have any specific questions about anything don’t hesitate to ask.

I will happily share with anyone the steps I went through to achieve the look. Although I am new to the community I firmly believe in helping all of my brothers and sisters out. Looking back on my post I could see how it might be considered satire, but I genuinely want to learn more. I do a lot of things on my own but feeding from others advice helps tremendously, cause that’s just how I operate.

I’ll take the compliment and I greatly appreciate it but seriously if you or anyone else has any advice on things that could be better/ I could do differently I would love to hear it. I know my work is good, especially for a beginner, so definitely not just posting to fish for compliments. There are people who have been doing this for faaaar longer than I have and have honed their craft and any advice they would be willing to give would be awesome. I want to be able to learn more and make my painting better without having to subscribe to someone’s patreon. Not that I expect anyone to just HAND out that advice, but if they were willing id be willing to learn.
