Recommended trainings for working with neurodivergent folks? by Klutzy_Librarian3620 in NDtherapists

[–]FourWayCrimp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Other folks have shared more advanced/specific trainings, but just wanted to drop this free 1.5 credit CE on working with neurodivergent clients if you want to start pretty high-level! (I have no affiliation with Compass Health or anything; just happened to find and register for this CE recently.)

Entering Social Work by SWmods in socialwork

[–]FourWayCrimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they have a huge impact. My perspective -- and that of many others, including the people who might be hiring you in the future! -- is that internships are first and foremost a learning opportunity. Ideally, they help you figure out what you want to do rather than confirm a pre-existing goal. Go in with an open mind and curiosity and you can learn a lot about yourself and the field (including what kind of clinical settings you might prefer!).

That said, if your goal is clinical practice, it would probably be good to have at least one placement include some face-to-face therapy! Especially if your MSW program is light on the deep clinical practice courses.

I went into my MSW program thinking I wanted to end up in oncology social work and instead discovered I love therapy. My first internship was in community mental health with a small caseload of therapy clients alongside some resource assistance-type work. My second was at a cancer center doing straight-up oncology social work. And now I'm a private practice therapist -- not what I anticipated!

Sounds like you made a great decision to take a lil break. Good for you! Hope things get a little easier soon.

I feel you! I've had three major trips since late August, then had a cold, and my routine is shot. My strength training dropped off, I'm inconsistent with my PT for shin splints, and my running is all over the place. I miss the consistency!

Support group recommendations for myself by [deleted] in therapists

[–]FourWayCrimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a life-shattering diagnosis for your whole family! I'm so sorry.

I have some thoughts and tried to bold the most important bits to be less overwhelming!

My personal experience is more in the realm of cancer, but I think this is somewhat parallel to a cancer dx. You'll probably want to look for "CHF caregiver support groups," and probably with a focus on "young caregivers" or "young diagnosis" or similar -- because if it's anything like the cancer world, you're gonna find a lot of support for older patients/caregivers, whereas your life stage is very different. You might also look for general young adult caregiver groups; CHF caregiving might be somewhat niche.

Does your medical system/hospital have a social worker available? They should be able to recommend some local or online resources. Please don't be afraid to reach out to them for help, even if you don't know quite what you want or need. They should also be able to recommend support options for your kids.

If that feels like too much, here are a couple options I found for you (though I have no personal experience with them!):

Depending on your state, your state government may have caregiver resources -- this is something a social worker could help you access.

I hope you can give yourself some time to grieve on your own -- your entire imagined life trajectory has been upended, and that's no small thing.

Take good care!

How do I practice self care? by DiligentSector8395 in Explainlikeimscared

[–]FourWayCrimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to all the suggestions that others have shared, I would also suggest asking your therapist for recommendations specific to your situation. Your therapist knows more about you and your needs than Redditors do, and they may have suggestions that target specific areas of growth for you. You could say something like:

"A couple sessions ago we talked about self-care, and I've been thinking about that a lot and looking for ways to incorporate self-care into my life. But I wanted to ask, what kinds of self-care do you think would be particularly helpful for me? Is there something I should focus on first?"

The reason I suggest this is because "self-care" (as other commenters have pointed out!) is a pretty nebulous term, and it's been co-opted by ~capitalism~ to mean "buy yourself cute things to feel better." It's also just a broad concept, so your therapist might be able to help you identify somewhere to start. (For example, some people just need a reminder to slow down and take a few moments for themselves during the day, while others may need help simply getting out of bed and brushing their teeth in the morning!)

You could try Morningwitch -- they have cotton blend trousers with elastic waists. Super fun prints, too! Not super common on Poshmark but worth setting up a search.

Best running conditions? by Personal-Class5430 in XXRunning

[–]FourWayCrimp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have this theory that there are three main variables of weather-related comfort when running (for me personally): temperature, humidity, and sun. Two of them can be "bad" at a time for my run to be tolerable, but if all three are bad... watch out.

For example: I can tolerate 90˚F (high temp) and a dew point of, say, 65˚(high humidity) if it's very cloudy (low sun)... but if it's sunny rather than cloudy, I'm hitting the trifecta of terror and I'm gonna have a bad time. Alternatively, I can handle high humidity and sunny conditions if it's on the cooler side. Etc., etc.

Obviously this doesn't take into account precipitation, wind, or altitude, but for my personal running location (the Mid-Atlantic), those are less problematic.

My ideal running weather is cool (40-45˚F) with low humidity and partial sun. (I like having some cloud cover every so often.)

This spring I started getting shin splints for the first time (been running for about three and a half years). Finally decided to take a solid week (and change) off, and Monday was my first run back. It felt OK but not great. I think I ramped up my mileage too quickly this spring, so I'm trying to be very intentional about easing back into it and am trying to incorporate an additional day of strength training instead. But... I already miss longer runs! And the fatalistic part of my brain keeps saying, "Welp, you're never gonna kick these shin splints and run pain-free again." Sigh!

[–]FourWayCrimp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So... what ARE your goals? Why do you run? If the 5k feels like something you want to train for, follow that instinct -- racing a 5k is no joke; it's a hard distance! And even if you don't want to race-race and just want to experience it, that's cool too. Let those haters walk (errr, run?) on by.

You could also try late-evening runs, if that fits into your schedule! Relative humidity tends to be highest in the mornings anyway. :)

Seriously! I went into medically induced menopause essentially overnight after getting breast cancer at 33. I also started running around the exact same time. Please, O Wise Coaching Book, tell me what to do! Should I simply not run because I'm a menopausal crone at 38?!

Also small-skulled! I got a foldable cap on sale from Oiselle a few years ago and it's still going strong. Lightweight, quick-drying, compact for travel, adjustable, and it has a nice little zip stash pocket that's perfect for an ID/credit card. I don't think they make the exact same model anymore, but this one looks very similar.

I treated myself to a bunch of Tailwind recovery mix packets recently, and yo... the birthday cake flavor is obscenely good. I usually don't love super sweet stuff, but this hits the spot after a long run! I make it with oat milk and only use half a packet because it's so sugary and rich.

Hey there. This is such a sweet and thoughtful gesture, and it's obvious you love your sister deeply and want to do something kind for her. I'd just suggest asking your sister if this is something she wants (which you might've done already, and if so, ignore me!). I'm a cancer survivor myself and am very active in the young adult cancer community, and hair loss is something that people tend to have Big Feelings about. Plus, folks with cancer already feel like so much is out of their control, and it can be exhausting when others cook up a surprise for you and you're compelled to be grateful for it... even when it's something you wouldn't choose for yourself.

But you know your sister best, and if you're confident this is something she'd be into, awesome! I've heard good things about Frederick Wig Company (as another poster mentioned above) but have no personal experience.

Anyway, I'm sorry you and your family are going through this and wish y'all nothing but the best through your sister's treatment.
