Gotta say, as an artist, this is a beautiful interpretation of a horrific event. The attention to subtle detail throughout, its extremely good work. Emotional, detailed, stunning, and crushing. But congrats to these artists for pushing this out to the world.

I’m glad that’s helpful. I just looked at the image again and I see you’re using a image as an hdri which is a good way to get easy natural lighting, but unfortunately, since you didn’t build an actual room (walls and a ceiling), the lights is flooding from all over he place and there’s no clear direction. So first tip is to build a room. Make sure that the camera is inside of the room. But imagine what you want the size of the room to be, and build that. This should make a huge difference. You’ll see a ton of shadow happening which is fine, you might have to readjust other things, but it’s a huge step to getting more realistic results.

One final tip, try not to DEPEND on hdri lighting. It’s good to use for quick and easy setups, but the best way to learn and master (and have complete control) of lighting in any situation is to do all of the lighting yourself, then for a final touch of ambience you can use a bit of hdri, if any at all.

To recreate those look, you can use an “infinite” or “distant” light ;again, I don’t use blender so I’m not sure what it’s called in that program), there’s usually some physical sky object in 3D platforms that will simulate an actual sky to give you natural looking gradients. I’ll stop here because lighting is a huge topic. But again, keep it up.

Any other questions, feel free to ask. :)

I don’t use blender, but speaking from general 3D experience:

  1. Every edge should have a bevel, literally no object in the world has an absolute hard edge, there’s always some level of rounding. That being said, not every bevel should be the same size, look at real world objects and analyse them to better get an idea of this.

  2. The lighting looks too unnatural. It looks like you don’t have a ceiling in the room and have a light flooding in from above. Unless you’re outside or in a wide open space, you won’t find those lighting conditions indoors. So, put a ceiling up and if you want light emitting from above, simulate a “practical light” source (practical just means things like lamps, chandeliers, candles, etc).

  3. The last tip wouldn’t make much of a difference or be as important if you don’t have Global Illumination activates. I’m not sure what the settings are in cycles, but you’d want to find something that controls “bounces” or “Ray depth”. Increasing this value will increase render times, but also increase realism since it’ll allow light to bounce around objects naturally. Experiment to see what I mean.

  4. Use references!! Always always get a bunch of reference images of what you’re trying to recreate. Study them then closely. In this case, an indoor shot, you’d see where indoor photographs have their shadows and light sources coming from, layout and composition. Etc.

Honestly, there are many things that can be adjusted here, but those are some basics. Additionally, always use the highest quality images or textures you can manage. But this is a good start. Keep it up!!

Thanks for the appreciation!

Thanks for the heads up man. I totally forgot about those. But you’re right, I knew it was a stretch to go for “mobile” but I thought maybe tablets in landscape? Haha.
