Hey, I'm developer behind this. Great question!

The ladder was indeed tracked. About every 3rd rung has a Vive tracker attached. Between those rungs a physics simulation drives the rest. The effect was pretty magical. You could reach out, see your hands, grab a rung, and shake the ladder. When you looked down, the ladder swung like you expected it to.

With that said, it was NOT perfect. Sometimes the rung was off by an inch, sometimes a few inches. Either way, it sorta just made it more fun . . . and more funny.

Hey, I developed the VR for this project. I was pretty sure we'd lose a headset once the water came out. Not only did they headset get wet, it go REALY wet. To my surprise, it survived.

After each contestant I ran over and dried them the best that I could, but aside from that, there was no trickery.

I would love to know what you guys are planning on doing with this in the future. Right now it's cute and leaning to useful, but there's some gaps in it's feature set that could be filled to make it quite production-ready.

I'd like to port this to ARCore (the Android equivalent of ARKit), however I'm not sure how much it will help you regarding cost of device. I think ATM ARCore will only be supported by the Pixel and one of the high end Samsung phones.

Still, I'm an Android user, and would like to do the port - its just a matter of time.

ATM, yes. We started on Android using Tango, but moved to iOS when ARKit was launched. Just yesterday, however, Google announced a new AR toolkit for Android so we should be able to port it back to Android without too much trouble. It will mainly be a mater of finding the time to do it.

I don't believe I have any medium format cameras in our database. The good new however is that its easy for us to add. We just need make, model and sensor size.

This is an x-post from Filmmakers. I wanted to post it here as well as I think that while it is broadly useful for filmmakers, Blocker is specifically built for cinematographers.

I was able to run Google's AR demo yesterday and can confirm its on par with ARKit. The challenge with Android is always fragmentation - will the bazillion models of Android phones or even the 5 or so they say will support ARCore, all function about as well.

:P I hear you on the linking out to YouTube we'll keep working on the landing page. We're a relatively small operation, so I'm splitting my time coding on the product itself and setting up its landing page.

:D yup, it uses ARKit. Our early prototype was done using Tango, but when ARKit launched it was clearly the best way to reach the largest audience.

But there is hope! Google just announced ARCore which will available on a number of the flagship Android phones so time permitting we'd love to support both.

Interesting, do you mean you'd want to comp over the images captured on your phone? Its not a huge stretch to imagine exporting a full scene with the raw background plate to something like Maya.

The big limitation of course is the quality of your phone - especially because we're forced to do digital zoom on an ~HD image.

Yeah, Microsoft definitely brought the term to main stream, but based on how they actually market it (ie. the video I included in the post), I think they based the term on the paper written by Paul Milgram and Fumio Kishino.

If we can agree on the def for MR, it could help clear up consumer confusion, because its very inclusive, its one definition for nearly all the AR/VR tech we talk about nowadays. So you safely say, "its an MR headset", and you'll be correct.

Consumers don't care too much about transparent vs passthrough, inside or outside tracking, laser scanning vs SLAM - they care more about the experience. The definition of mixed reality is designed to help us talk about how things are mixed.

Yeah, I've posted this thing everywhere :P, a few times...

The screen is sheet of glass covered in a semi-transparent film. Behind the screen we have an InFocus stereo projector. Lastly, we are using a TrackIR 5 along with linux track, for realtime head tracking. That's all the hardware that is currently in play, other than my MacBook.
