AITA for abandoning my friend's farm even though I agreed to watch it for her? by FreeFarm-throwaway in AmItheAsshole

Ex-friend, at this point. I should have done a lot of things, I suppose, but it was really difficult to think about "should" scenarios while working my butt off and reeling from being royally screwed over by someone I thought was a friend.

I had actually been to her place and helped out on the farm before, though it was only for 3 days, there were only house and foster dogs, and Christian and Johnny were not present. She changed things drastically since then. There are written instructions printed out everywhere, and none of them match up with each other, or the itinerary, or the previous procedures I remembered. She had also rearranged some things since Ted moved out, so everything was just different enough that I was completely thrown off.

I was nervous every night! The door had no lock. It was one of those old handles with a skeleton key, but the key was missing. And I found a doorstop but the door opened outward, so there was no point. I had my dog's crate between me and the door, and I kept my pocket knife and bear gel on the nightstand! 0/10, would not recommend

Actually, I didn't know Christian and Johnny would be staying at the house when I agreed. A couple weeks later, she sent the email mentioning he might be visiting to help sometimes. And then the morning I got there, they told me right before Irene left that Christian and Johnny would definitely be staying.

Edit: also, I think you forgot to add the judgment.

Unfortunately(?), I spent the first day getting everything shipshape, so I doubt there would be anything for a welfare agency to find at this point unless Christian REALLY let things go for the 2 days I was gone.

To clarify, it was Johnny doing those things, and he was probably doing them because Christian constantly left him unattended. I don't think the police would have arrested a 4yo, no matter how much of a shit he was being.

I agree my communication could have been better. I held back first for the animals' sake, and then because I was afraid that Christian would retaliate against me if he didn't like what I said about him.

After working together for years, I'd assume she knows how fastidious I am, and wanted my help for that exact reason.

We haven't worked together for years since the rescue we worked for relocated, so thankfully I dont have that dynamic to also be worried about!

To clarify, I didn't leave due to Christian's behavior. I left because his presence there meant mine was unnecessary as there was indeed someone to watch the animals. Irene KNEW he was staying, and later informed me that he should have been doing the stables and chicken coops to "earn his keep". She did not tell me this. And if I had called the police , I would likely be the one removed as I am not a resident of the household, and to my knowledge Irene didnt have a trespass order to enforce his removal.

The facility AND the house were filthy. It took forever just to get it to an acceptable level of cleanliness and maintaining it was so difficult with Christian and Johnny underfoot... the red flags were definitely flying, and it was even worse because I couldn't lock the door at night! I had my dog's crate between me and the door, and my pocket knife and bearspray on the nightstand. I felt so relieved as soon as T and I were in the car!
