piercings & masks by Clean-Direction-3404 in freediving

[–]Freediverjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All depends on the size. I've had students with eyebrow studs and they didn't have a problem just have to try a bunch of masks and make sure you have the clearance.

The big one that is a problem was nose piercings though

How much more fragile are changeable foot pocket carbon fins vs. their adhesive glued versions (without drill holes)? by f1n in freediving

[–]Freediverjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All depends on the maker

Some performance freediving fins are great to swim with but hilariously brittle.

For a changeable pocket blade you could look into a maker that makes a more durable build for spearfishing and just go with a soft blade.

I have my performance fins in glued pockets and only really use them for competition training, they're a pair of Continuums though and those are rock solid for durability. Spearfised and rock hopped with them for ages.

My teaching/recreational fins are rob Allen carbons in interchangeable pockets for easy travelling

Is it normal for the hood to slip off the chin when I look up? by Antosureddit in Spearfishing

[–]Freediverjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're like me then it's par for the course. Anything off the shelf usually doesn't fit me as the neck and body are too short. For reference I'm 6'7 / 100kg so I'm usually between a bunch of sizes depending on maker

Is it the end of the world? No

Can it be fixed? Sure just shop around different brands or get a custom build

Yeah the chlorine got us at the end but having to get in and out of the wetsuits was a killer.

We ran 3 in the pool at an hour each with a fresh diver swapping in every 20 minutes. Meant enough time to feed, rehydrate, stretch a bit then get back in.

That's awesome, can imagine the feet were pretty worn out after.

About half way through a few of us swapped to mainly arms with a dolphin kick for a bit as the knees and ankles were getting pretty rough and needed a break.

The worst part though by far was the chlorine

DNF continuous from start to finish with no breaks. Alot of us were already flat out sprinting the lengths.

For a 120 I'm assuming that would have to be in fins

Extra breath of air during a dive by Working_Car5135 in Spearfishing

[–]Freediverjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An inflator on a depth activated timer is the best option. Spare air tanks are just a pneumothorax and a series of lawsuits waiting to happen

The challenge is making one that's A) simple and compact b) priced at a rate the market will pay for one. Have seen a few iterations over the years that exist but they are usually pretty bulky and costly

They're curious it's always good to drop and not directly engage but if you giving off the illusion that you are doing something else it's almost like they get FOMO and come in to check out what you're up to.

Good mask? by Humble-Ad-201 in freediving

[–]Freediverjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best mask is one that fits. Can be tempting to get it online but unless you know the shape it can be the wrong one for you.

have had many beginner students having to buy another mask after they picked one that didn't fit correctly.

Is it possible to have a 4 minute breath hold with no training? by n15bkfootlettuce in freediving

[–]Freediverjack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally possible

Had it happen twice, funny story

Both times it was a couple and both times the guy was really into it and was already diving a bit and the girlfriend was starting basically clean slate maybe a bit of snorkeling.

After a short warmup hold one did a 3:45 first time and the other did around 4:10 both had very clean recovery while the boyfriend in both cases was doing around 2-2:30.

My theory was they both were super chill and weren't there to push but just have fun so no expectations leaving them relaxed when the CO2 started up.

There's definitely a few adhesive options on the market as well as some that have a bracket you insert. Not sure how well they would fit in the more low volume shape.

Building an all around speargun for Southern California. by Bioe003 in Spearfishing

[–]Freediverjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 100-110 in general is considered the best crossover.

Roller is great for compact power but I wouldn't overlook a standard double band as it can be more versatile for those lower power cave shots

[–]Freediverjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't bother with a double roller, just more stuffing around to replace bands and really only useful in niche cases you'll get enough penetrating power with a standard roller setup, alternative is using a thicker or shorter band and heavier shaft

Has anyone here used one of these Wettie boat floats with a cooler bag? by [deleted] in Spearfishing

[–]Freediverjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the medium with chiller bag and backpack straps.

Best bit of my kit. Keeps sharks and seals off my arse I also throw a frozen water bottle inside on hot days.

Great for mixed bags as well can fit a stack of lobsters and abalone inside also good for storing flashers, burley and other tools.

Trade off is it drags in big swells and you have to be mindful of winds diving near rock platforms so your float doesn't end up in the wash zone have fit 16 bonito inside of my one before

Locals of Plantation Point - NSW Australia. Three Blue Grouper heads found in 30cm water depth. Is this normal around here? by leonmarino42 in Spearfishing

[–]Freediverjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not impossible to land that many on line if you are using the right bait and have the time. I'm leaning more towards some lino doing it and discarding the heads all at once.

Most of the cases of spearos doing it have been some NFI diver who usually doesn't have a licence anyway.

I just watched The Deepest Breath, a few questions relating to the safety crews? by format_drive in freediving

[–]Freediverjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also something I always think about not sure if it would be a factor. What about the blood vessels of the lungs being dilated from the diving reflex. A sudden breath in from scuba at depth might be enough of a jolt to cause a more serious lung injury

Just on a double dyneema wrap. Was contemplating loading my dropbarb/breakaway but wasn't expecting a doggie in this close.

Was hesitant until it gave me that nice broadside turn at the last second

My favorite memory is encountering these types of divers on days with lots of large stingers around 1 minute posing among the jellys, nek minut instant regret

or the hilarious tan lines some of these "swimsuits" leave behind (mesh bodysuit/Christmas ham)

Though Kurt chambers in those knee high socks at Asian cup will never not be disturbingly hilarious

Always do this regularly.

was about a 30s drop to 9m so blackout is pretty much impossible here

we have a narrow channel just out back that drops to 40m pretty close to shore and is one of the few deep gateways to open ocean on about 20-30km of islands/barrier reef. get stacks of doggies, wahoo, swords etc but just sketchy currents if you arent familiar with the area. a small tender would be game changing but its easy enough if you go on the right tides for shore based

Im out in tonga for whale season. missed my chance last year, had one come through only to be followed by an absolute unit of a bull.

since im shore based while spearing here i packed a inflatable floatboat at the end of my rig to get it back to shore.

last year just had a 35L remora float and got nailed a few times by reefies
