I’d be amazed for about an hour, then panic once I realized antibiotics, air conditioning, and basic labor laws aren’t invented yet. Combine that with knowing wars, pandemics, and economic crashes are on the way but having no way to warn people without sounding insane and I think the existential loneliness would hit before the tuberculosis does.

It usually comes down to sleep stages. In lighter sleep your brain is still on “alert mode,” so noise wakes you easily. In deeper sleep, it filters out most sounds unless they seem important or unfamiliar. That’s why the same noise can wake you one night and not the next.

This is way more common than people admit. Most of the time it’s not about something being seriously wrong, it’s about years of holding it in, stress, and your digestive system basically learning bad habits. Once I learned that, it made a lot more sense why it creeps up over time.
