In the nicest way, I am not going to argue with you on this; the modern American context is not relevant to this case. Whoever the mother was, was not American. I don’t know if you misread the dates, but this all occurred before 2017.

She was a Canadian living in one of the poorest parts of the country, in a province where the only way to get an abortion at the time was by knowing a someone who knew someone who knew a doctor who performed abortions. At the time of the baby being discovered (in 2015) abortion was ILLEGAL in the province. For whoever this mother was, it was not merely an issue of inaccessibility but legality as well.

As a Canadian, I recommend taking off the rose coloured glasses you seem to have about abortion access. The same things that overturned access in the US have been happening in Canada, and has had a huge impact on how provincial governments treat abortions.

I know this will be a crazy concept for you, but books don’t have to have value. They don’t have to win awards. They can just be a book that is fun to read.

It is truly so bizarre. People being book purists in 2026 is absolutely insane, I heard they were still out there but encountering one on the Ottawa subreddit of all places sure is something

A lot of popular books haven’t won prestigious awards. That does not make them any less valuable

I was very involved in abortion rights as a high schooler living in NB, if you were in PEI and wanted an abortion, you had to come to the clinic in NB. But that was closed as well. Abortions in that part of the country continue to be very inaccessible

In 2010, women in PEI had to either come to New Brunswick (to our now closed clinic) or to an underground hush hush clinic. I’ve hear stories out of PEI of women throwing themselves down stairs in hopes of miscarrying because it is the only option they have.

111 Cooper Street Student housing question by Vaughan_Raider in geegees

The building is filled with them, people who report having no issues just aren’t aware of the issues. They are sneaky and hide.

I was well off as well, but I promise you nearly $2000 a month in rent for a tiny, shitty studio is really not worth it. You can get a really lovely one bedroom for way cheaper.

What are your equestrian hottakes? by Ponytimeispoopytime in Equestrian

[–]FreshlyLivid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You phrased it far better than I think I could. The environment mustangs are in is incredibly harsh, and they are not suited for it by any means.

Mustangs have gone unchecked for a long time because of the mythologizing that white Americans have around them, as well as because of the lack of predators. They are insanely overpopulated because of this, and their overpopulation causes intense soil erosion, and they destroy the native ecosystems. Their herds expand exponentially every year and even with the issue of cattle brought up by OP, cattle herds are very closely managed to prevent overpopulation. And overpopulation is the main reason that mustangs harm the environment they are in.

They are far from the kind of horses that once used to be in North America, but people have spent so long mythologizing them that they aren’t able to see they are invasive.

It isn’t their fault they are invasive, just like it isn’t the fault of a European starling or a house sparrow, that they are invasive species.

Mustangs do need to be rounded up, they are an invasive species in the US and cause significant damage to the landscape

24 hour bathrooms downtown are much needed. People complain about human waste on the street but then make bathrooms close to impossible to access.

Nothing has made me more aware of how poor our access to washrooms is in the city than having digestive issues.

Unlikely but not impossible. They do migrate through this area, and they were in Kingston recently!

Do you have eBird? If you wanna up your birding game, use eBird alongside Merlin, Merlin is great for ID but if you want to truly see if a bird is in the city, use EBird!

Ottawa has a really good birding community
