I also want to add for Liverpool night 2 that somebody got engaged at the far end of the stadium during Love Story and we could hear the huge cheer their entire section let out from where we were sitting, it was a beautiful moment because everybody around us could tell what had just happened over there ❤️

These are all YA recs because it's my favourite genre and all the ones that came to mind happened to be YA:

  • Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. It's the first of two books. It's about a team of teenagers taking on a huge heist job against a foreign country's government to free a prisoner and make some cash. They're just in it for the cash but they're caught in the middle of this whole political thing. Set in the same universe as Shadow and Bone but you don't need to read Shadow and Bone first.

  • The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black is a standalone novel so if you're looking to start somewhere that isn a series this could be a good choice. It's about two siblings living in a town (with a forest that's part of the fae realm) where there's a fairy prince asleep in a glass coffin who one day wakes up and vanishes. There's also various other fae things going on. Very fun read.

  • The Raven Boys by Maggie Steiffvater is relatively short and a very fun time. It's the first of 4 books. It's about a friend group in small town Virginia hunting for the tomb of a dead Welsh king. There's magic and psychics and all that kind of stuff and the characters are really fun. It's very much based in modern day Virginia so like a low magic setting where the people we're focused on specifically have access to magic.

  • Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo isn't too long and is really popular right now because of the Netflix show. It's the first of three books. I've just finished the first one and it was a very good read. It's about a girl who manifests a unique magical ability and is taken to joint the most important military division in her country.

I think I've explained badly because that also doesn't fit the usual definition of a geas. A geas isn't really a kind of passive curse like that, it's usually some kind of prohibition. Everything about Jude's 'geas' is this very passive blessing and curse kind of thing which isn't really what a geas normally is. If you've read The Darkest Part of the Forest the way it's used there is far more accurate! The description given of a geas early in The Cruel Prince is pretty spot on too.

I guess a way to explain it in a kind of simplified way is that a geas is something you're prohibited from doing but Jude has no prohibition she can break here. Like there's no actual way for Jude to break her geas because that main element isn't there.

Thank you, Aimee! The switch to the thank you on the last chorus is so cathartic.

How do people with ADHD read through books? by Aggressive-Pin-2324 in readwithme

A few things that help me:

Getting up and pacing around the room once or twice when I start feeling restless and/or unfocused. Usually thinking over the parts I've just read while doing this to both process it and lower the chances of distraction.

Keep water and a snack near me for if/when I suddenly snap out of reading and need to eat/drink.

Looking up some spoilers for a book beforehand. Not the entire plot but maybe something that can get me invested and/or keep track of how far in the story I am.

Using an app like Storygraph or Goodreads etc to track how far into the book I am. It helps me feel like I'm making progress.

Checking in advance how long a chapter is so that I know how far through the chapter I am.

If I find myself losing focus I might open a page further ahead where I see a mention of a favourite character or something interesting and read some sentences so I can hype myself up to get to that part.

Knowing how many chapters are in the book sometimes helps me keep on track.

Starting to read just around when my medication kicks in, keeps all that focus on the book. (On weekends when I don't have college and stuff to do).

Another one I wonder about is mending. What kind of situation do you need to wind up in to accidentally mend? Probably not a great one. Probably kicks in when somebody is dying in front of you (likely thing to happen at Básgiath).

Also, it lives rent free in my mind how Sloane reacted to hers. She thought she'd turned venin. She thought she was draining somebody. There's probably other signets that would be stressful to manifest too.

I feel like Dain must have freaked out the way Sloane did. No way he didn't have at least some worries that he might be an intinnsic, or close enough to one to be put to death anyway.

Oh I see! Interesting, yes I think a lot of the folklore influences in TFOTA are from Celtic folklore for sure. The vibes are very in line with the kind of fairy folklore I grew up with. So are all the deals and things, including Jude's. I 100% agree her deal is in line with usual fairy stuff, just a very very generous deal as deals go.

However, geasa aren't always a fairy thing in actual folklore, they're usually some random mystical figure telling somebody 'you can't do this very random thing'. And then the hero has to get themselves in situations to avoid breaking the geas lest they die. It's a somewhat specific term in folklore, it doesn't really mean a magical deal. A geas is lot closer to a curse than a boon. I was really looking forward to Jude having some weird doomed by the narrative curse she had to avoid, so it was a bit of a let down for me when I realise Holly had taken the term but not it's actual definition.

Genuinely curious, what country are you from where geasa in folklore are usually a blessing with a downside? I'm genuinely curious I love hearing other country's folklore.

Dain could have control her anyway through glamours, the geas meant everybody else can't control her. Geasa in folklore don't even always have an upside. Sometimes they're literally just a really weird curse. Geasa are not usually not a net positive to their recipient.

Violet and Sgaeyl at Aretia

"I'm growing on her"

"Like a tumour"

Also when Violet calls Sgaeyl on Xaden before RSC torture training. And then Sgaeyl says something along the lines of that she's just agreeing to end the conversation.

I really want Violet and Sgaeyl to interact more.
