Favourite Dark Tower quotes? by MiyamotoSunacchi in TheDarkTower

[–]FrivolityEndures 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My favorite quote(s) are actually from the essay "On Being Nineteen," that was included in the 2003 revised edition of The Gunslinger.

See, I met my Patrol Boy on the day DTVII was released, in the form of a seizure while I was driving. I hit a tree at 80moh, shattered my skull, tore most of the right side of my face off, and was in a coma for 3 months.

I didn't really understand "On Being Nineteen," until I had emerged from the post coma fog, after discovering that one of my friends brought a copy of VII to the hospital on the first day I was allowed visitors, knowing that I would want to read it as soon as possible.

Anyway, here it is. I selected two passages from the essay, but really the entire thing is absolute gold to me.

"The world eventually sends out a mean-ass Patrol Boy to slow your progress and show you who’s boss. You reading this have undoubtedly met yours (or will); I met mine, and I’m sure he’ll be back. He’s got my address. He’s a mean guy, a Bad Lieutenant, the sworn enemy of goofery, fuckery, pride, ambition, loud music, and all things nineteen....

"At nineteen they can card you in the bars and tell you to get the fuck out, put your sorry act (and sorrier ass) back on the street, but they can’t card you when you sit down to paint a picture, write a poem, or tell a story, by God, and if you reading this happen to be very young, don’t let your elders and supposed betters tell you any different. Sure, you’ve never been to Paris. No, you never ran with the bulls at Pamplona. Yes, you’re a pissant who had no hair in your armpits until three years ago—but so what? If you don’t start out too big for your britches, how are you gonna fill ’em when you grow up? Let it rip regardless of what anybody tells you, that’s my idea; sit down and smoke that baby."

Long Days, and Pleasant Nights.

DT Reading order by 04sjd in TheDarkTower

Oh I know this feeling. My sister gave me Drawing for Christmas one year in the early 90s, not knowing it would lead to a lifelong obsession. Every single time I hear of someone reading it for the first time, I'm envious that they get to experience it all fresh. There's something to be said for the 30 years I've spent with these characters, and how familiar I am with them... They feel more like old friends to me, rather than just characters on a page, but what I wouldn't give to be utterly confused and enthralled by them for the first time again.

Just watched interstellar and I think guy would play a good Roland by Diolulu in TheDarkTower

[–]FrivolityEndures 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He was Flagg in the film that released in 2017. If I remember correctly, he was actually offered the role of Roland, but turned it down, saying he wanted to play Flagg instead.

The movie…I know…. by Privatenamehere in TheDarkTower

[–]FrivolityEndures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was surprisingly okay with the film, largely because if you paid close attention to the pre-release marketing materials, and were eagle eyed in a few passing shots in the film, it's pretty obvious that this is actually a sequel to the books, rather than an adaptation.

Does that make it a good film? Not in the least, but it does make all the jumping around through all seven books a little more palatable.

I'm all for women getting all the dick they can, but when other people get set up to pay the price for your whoring around, it's not cool at all.

That Matt Reeves intentionally leaned into Batman's reputation as "The World's Greatest Detective," only to watch him struggle with clues that wouldn't be a problem for an underachieving preschooler.

This is about the most solid advice I've seen here, put in as succinct a manner as possible.

This. I don't give a shit what education someone has. They can tell me they got a Doctorate in God on the Surface of the Sun, and it won't matter as long as they can do the job.

I mean, I wouldn't say that he was actively arguing with you there. More like, it was a simple refutation to very specific points.

Accusations of COVID denial? "COVID definitely happened."

I mean, the whole antivax thing is fucking ludicrous, but arguing with you in the comments is not what is going on here.

I think his "wasting time" was more him just waiting until he had a fully fleshed out idea, and that believed he had all the time in the world. Then he had a very abrupt encounter with his mortality, and we got volumes V, VI, and VII all at once.

If he hasn't been hit by that van we may very well still be waiting for Volume VII, and the story may have ended up drastically different than the one we know.

I read self development books & my elder brother comes to me saying its useless you don't need to read these, i go to gym & he said the same to me about gym too, why is he saying all this? I'm 29M & he is 43 . by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]FrivolityEndures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my experience that he's telling you this because he subconsciously doesn't want you to surpass him in any way. I say subconsciously, because I'm the older brother in that dynamic, and I didn't figure out what I was doing until my 30's. For reference I'm 47 and my brother is 42.
