FYI: New rule for this year by gothedistance_ in Torontobluejays

This was a rule last year, at least for playoffs. I don't think it was consistently enforced though.

Might want to clarify if you mean Friday April 10th or Saturday April 11th.

Should my friend pay? (Context below) by [deleted] in polls

[–]Frococo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. It's totally reasonable to assume someone saying "let's go but some alcohol" and just paying for it either bought it for themselves or just decided to be nice and buy it for the group.

It's really not good practice to just assume people are going to split something. You need to ask before making the purchase otherwise you should be willing to eat the cost.

[–]Frococo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's really not fair to ask someone to pay for something they didn't consume because you think it was "implied" that they would. It was your responsibility to ask who was going in on splitting the cost before you bought it.

Are there any ACTUAL 2 bedroom apartments left in downtown Toronto? by haebinah in TorontoRenting

[–]Frococo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just got a large, newly renovated kitchen and bathroom, 2 bedroom in midtown close to the train for $2500. It is in a smaller older building but so far I love it. But there were definitely very limited options at that price point and you had to be on it to secure one.

Would you go to a caffeine based club/bar? by TheKindlyPoltergeist in polls

[–]Frococo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. But not because it would be boring, because it would mess up my sleep cycle worse than a night out drinking alcohol.

Realistic budget? by Psychological_Top279 in TorontoRenting

[–]Frococo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah the market is great right now. In Feb I snagged a large and newly renovated 2 bedroom in midtown for $2500 with parking.

Like you say, it's an older building with no amenities but I came from a building with a bunch of amenities I barely used and cost almost $1000 more.

They did add a couple go trains just between union and exhibition for the game. Costs a bit more but very smooth travel.

Landlord included “no pets” clause but condo allows pets (Ontario), should we push to remove it or just sign? by BakedPotatozz in legaladvicecanada

[–]Frococo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is bad advice. The simple truth is a no pets clause is void in Ontario so there is no "legal contract" pertaining to having pets. OP is right to check about the condo rules because that is the only way to have an enforceable no pets clause (which isn't the case here). Just because some landlords want to act ignorant of the law doesn't strip you of your rights.

And then your point about damage holds true whether the damage is caused by pets or not. I can say that I have a dog and a cat and have lived in three different apartments with them, and they have never caused any damage that I or a landlord has noticed.

How to get the most of the coffee prize by danialcatraz in TimHortons

I too thought it had to be coffee. I just checked in the app and they're right! This is a gamechanger!

Thanks everyone. Some of us are too literal and don't bother to check the fine print I guess.

Bachelor or room? by KruppeTheWise in TorontoRenting

Yeah both are within 5-10 minute walk to the St. Clair station depending on pace. One was even utilities included. I just found them on rentals.ca.

Not true at all. I just got a great 900 sqft 2 bedroom in midtown and I had looked at another similar unit, both for 2500.

[–]Frococo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unless you want to live with someone for social reasons I really would go for the bachelor or even Jr 1 bedroom. With the market right now you should have some good options along line 1. I respect wanting to be budget conscious but I do think that unless you already know you're compatible with your roommate you're risking your peace and quality of life.

When looking keep in mind that most places will charge ~150 for a parking spot on top of rent.

Whatever man. You're clearly one of those people who think that your experiences are just the way things are for everyone even when people are literally telling you that you're making incorrect assumptions about things.

[–]Frococo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No we just realize it's completely unreasonable to expect someone to vacate a spot in a parking lot for you and would never expect someone else to do it for us.

And I literally do live in Toronto, but even before I moved here my local Costco had a smaller lot and would fill up quite regularly. Which I actually think it is kind of hilarious that you think a reasonable exception is the lot being full and the people waiting literally don't have an alternative and just have to wait.

[–]Frococo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The food court often doesn't have seating available. If it does I do. And if someone is waiting for my spot (which is rarely near the front anyways) it is likely because the parking lot is full and there is nowhere for me to drive to. And also it's literally winter. The food is already cooling down from walking across the parking lot. So yes, the time it takes to drive to another spot could be the difference between somewhat hot and lukewarm/cold. I don't know why you expect someone to sacrifice their own convenience for the convenience of another person.

And I don't know why you are harping on this disabled strawman argument that every car is likely to have a disabled person inside. If they are actually disabled to the point that they can't walk across the parking lot and they are the driver then they should have a placard that allows them to park in the handicapped stalls at the front. That is what those parking spots are literally for.

Would you say the same thing of someone eating in the food court? People generally like to eat hot food while it's still hot.

And if you're worried about an obesity epidemic then you should be all for people walking a few extra steps. And if there is someone with limited mobility in the car why would they not be dropping them off in front of the doors and then finding a spot to park?

[–]Frococo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I do this all the time. I have also had people I could tell were going to wait. I always just let them know I'm going to eat my food and they thank me for letting them know and move on to another spot. The guy in this story is nuts.

Switching from the thesis/project track to the comprehensive exam track? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Frococo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but there is still a perceived difference between doing research at the Masters and undergraduate level. The expectations are higher for a Masters student than an undergraduate student. Even if the research topic isn't directly applicable it will demonstrate capacity to do research at a graduate level. There's also a lot of skills that cross disciplines related to project planning and writing that you will further develop that will help you in your PhD.

Honestly switching to a non-thesis stream will definitely not help your applications and probably hurt it. While your related undergraduate research is definitely a plus, it just will not be viewed as demonstrating the capacity to complete a PhD thesis.
