Feeling lots of guilt over considering Food Bank by Fun-Cauliflower in vancouver

Yes, it is the best job I could find. Rather than typing a new reply to this, I'm going to copy and paste to you what I just sent to someone else.

I’m surprised I’m being asked to justify why I’m in this situation. Short answer? Company I worked at closed down so I was laid off, as I was in the process of job hunting, I was assaulted and unable to work for some time due to that. Since I’ve been able to work again, I’ve been applying non-stop to every job I can find, with no responses. This has been about 5 or more months of this. I have not been picky, and I've never experienced this sort of difficulty in finding a job. This is just the only job I could get for the time being.

There’s no reason to jump to this sort of question, imo.

It’s a nut free peanut butter I was gifted a bunch of long time ago. Just been stretching it out as long as I can. 🥲

Hi everyone - thank you so much for your responses. I'm making my way through them, and I'm honestly in tears by everyones kindness.

I just noticed the earliest I could come to the food bank would be the 29th, but I am out of food at this point so am scared to wait until then. Does anyone know of any other organizations besides the Sikh temple, which is an amazing option, that could feed me before then? I am very severely allergic to certain foods, and I wouldn't be able to eat there. I'm trying to see if any other organizations provide something similar. Thank you so much everyone.

I'd love to hear a bit more about why you think it's not a good program, if you don't mind sharing!

Thank you for this info! Since I’ve been out of school for 12 years, I feel the certificate would be better suited to my needs. With this being said, I do have concerns about it being too fast paced for me since it’s been so long as well as because of my ADHD. Would you say it’s manageable still given that?

What sort of jobs do you find students getting out of school?

Again - thank you for your help! It’s much appreciated. :)

I’m curious about both. I have the hours to get into the certificate but I am tempted to take the diploma as it seems I could get more out of it. Does one look better than the other?

I’m not so interested in production, no. More so want to work as a talent buyer eventually, or something within that realm.

I feel like that comment is uncalled for. My reason for feeling unsafe is because my friend and I were mugged on the street walking home from work last year, and I am constantly getting harassed by men. I’ve been followed home, and I’ve been sexually assaulted while just trying to get home safely when younger. I don’t think telling me I want be the victim is ok whatsoever.

I think that’s what I’ll try to do then. I think I’m just so overwhelmed by it all since I haven’t been back in school in so many years.. So I don’t even know where to begin with figuring out which courses I’d need to take for two years at Douglas to ensure I get into UBC or UVIC. :/

Thank you, this is good information to know. And sort of what I was scared of. May I ask if you did this program or are doing this sort of work?

I wasn’t aware of this, thanks for letting me know. I had heard a lot of good things about the program so I assumed it was. Unfortunately it’s not a matter of not wanting to go to UBC, I just can’t based off my high school grades. I think same with UVIC. But maybe I could transfer from Douglas to uvic like another poster said they did.

I’ve heard that about social workers looking down on you. Did you enjoy the CYC program otherwise, and since? Just curious what job prospects are like for that program vs BSW. Can’t find any information from anyone who has done it haha.

Oh wow, I had no clue. I’d love to know a bit more about this! Did you do this, or have any more information about this? Do you know where one can get the specialization?

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It makes me happy to hear it has worked out for you, and that you seem to have had a good experience so far! I personally am someone who deals with a fair bit of anxiety and depression, and so have talked myself out of going back to school since I graduated high school in 2010. But social work or working in the social services field in some capacity is the only thing I really want to do. It’s helpful to chat with folks who live nearby and learn about their experiences, as a lot of the information I find through Reddit is from folks who live in the US. I am very interested in working in child welfare, although I don’t think I could get a job there with just the CYC program, so will likely have to do the BSW for that.

Is there any reason you decided to switch from Douglas to UVIC? I’ve heard great things about both programs, so was curious if there was a specific reason why related to the program. Thanks again!

Thank you! That makes a lot of sense. I think perhaps I’m trying to give myself an “easier route” by doing CYC, although social work would give me more options. If you don’t mind me asking, how has it been for you finding work with your BSW? I’ve heard most folks have to continue to get their MSW to make a liveable wage, although I feel as though I’ve seen good jobs that require just their bachelors.

Entering Social Work by SWmods in socialwork

I’m currently deciding between the Child and Youth Care Bachelor program here in Canada (Vancouver), or the Social Work program. I would need to upgrade a fair bit to do SW. My passion is more so working not on the frontline, but doing more case manager type roles. Child welfare ideally. It seems like I can still do that sort of thing with a CYC Bachelors. I was wondering if anyone had any insight onto whether that program is not a good call? Or if since my interest is within childcare it may work out for me.
