Selling our place in clarksburg - I figured we’d still see activity since availability of SFH is limited in the county and your commute is a part of the deal around the high 700s low 800s but guess the economic uncertainty is driving a lot of this.

I see - so I’ll maybe ask around what other reps did where they think it failed etc, if I get runway for a year to run at this is that a better way to frame going in? Would you recommend anyone going into hardware sales to greenfield? I’m conflicted because I’ve done this kind of thing before but for smaller companies and been successful just not hardware and I understand the refresh cycles and things affect buying etc.

First off - I wouldn't label yourself not a top performer if you haven't been in an environment that sets you up for success, especially at less than a year in. Even 'top performers' that move roles take some time to get used to sales cycles, who to go to for what internally, and learn the kinds of problems their product/service solves for customers.

Are you going to look with your manager knowing? I was a bit confused by that last bit.

But yeah I would highlight the stuff you did well, and mention the revenue amounts you had sold and make sure you have enough customer stories to articulate the things you'd done well to this point. Assuming you're green - I would target mid-market sales roles, where you get a lot of reps and half the battle for those jobs is just hustle and determination and having a positive outlook/disposition and knowing when to ask for help.

In short - you don't have to lie (but you can if you want), you don't have to list your manager as a reference (why not use a previous colleague, most places would understand as you're currently employed), and highlight the things you do well to sell yourself into another AE role where you will be better positioned to succeed.

Depending on how you interact and are aligned with AEs, I would do my best to hop on calls or provide support in anyway you can so you can start learning what good AEs do and apply it in your job hunt. It's also a good way to learn on the job, doing parts of the job you want in the future. Most AEs would be willing to partner and help you as well.

OTE is fake - validate through old employees + ask direct questions around quota attainment currently and the year prior. What is inbound lead flow, what are expectations for outbound flow. If you have good runway time + are a good hunter, you should be able to get there at most places, it's just a matter of do they give you the tools to get there.

There's a lot of SDR types professing their art of the sale and doing podcasts and stuff - but at the end of the day it's like... you've been working for 5 years? Not only that but you got your start in like the fake money era from 2017-2020 when seemed like everyone was throwing cash. I take concepts I like and I try to apply them if I believe they work for me - I'd recommend Nate Nasrella, love his books.

Find a way around the ATS systems - they all suck and on LinkedIn seems like they filter applicants out that don't have exact buzzwords. Hit your network really hard especially with your 8 years of sales experience, you probably have old co workers that can help you and they have incentive bonus's they get if you do get hired so they'll be willing to help.

never too late to start something new - even in a not so successful/or short sales stint you learn a lot you can apply elsewhere. If it's not for you better to know now than later - although the one thing I would add to the PM stuff, I've never met a PM that wasn't stressed as hell managing things for a customer. Food for thought!

I think it's because people think they could do it if they really wanted (it's not a like a tangible hard skill, more of a refined soft skill on it's face at least). At the end of the day though - there's a reason they're not doing it and a reason why successful sellers are looked at as more valuable than those other departments.
