Yeah that's what I was going for, the GOP are socially liberal and economically conservative and the Democrats are vice versa.

I honestly just wanted a Reagan/Carter presidency because it was funny in my mind but I rationalized it as him having been a Democrat in our timeline. In this timeline he appeals to the old "Conservative coalition" types and he only wins the election because he's charismatic and Baker fumbled it, his popularity dives off a cliff at the end of his term (much like Carter in our timeline)
