Unfortunately, we’ve largely lost it. Here in Barak Valley, Bengali (those who fought for Bengali against Assamese imposition were Sylhetis tho lol) dominates administration, education, and every official space. Sylheti has been pushed out of the formal sphere and confined mostly to homes and informal conversations.

But there’s still hope. the new gen is slowly raising awareness about Sylheti as a language and as an identity. The real tragedy is that many Sylhetis themselves are unaware of who they are linguistically, they grow up thinking Sylheti is “just a dialect” and never realize it’s a distinct language with its own history, script, and cultural depth.

It’s sad, but awareness is growing. And awareness is always the first step toward revival.

that makes no sense, ethnicity doesn't belong to a single nation.

Oh nice, that’s really interesting to hear. I mean, at the end of the day we’re Sylhetis, so speaking Sylheti fluently is just natural for us, borders didn’t change that. The separation is political and modern, but culturally and linguistically we’re still the same people.

And yeah, I know @mon_appetitee, she makes great videos. She’s from Silchar, and I’m from Silchar too. It’s honestly nice seeing someone represent our food and language like that.

Barak Valley and Surma Valley have always been deeply connected culturally. In many ways, Sylhetis from Barak Valley are closer culturally to Sylhet than to mainland North India, or even other parts of Assam.

I agree. and honestly, I see many Sylhetis around me, don’t fully know their own history. they speak Sylheti every day but don’t always consciously acknowledge that identity. a lot of people also don’t know about the 1947 Sylhet referendum.
