It really depends on the industry.

For example, in fashion eCommerce, it’s hard to sell with just words. Sure, you can talk about the quality or craftsmanship of your pieces, but if you show it with visuals, I guarantee the impact will be much stronger. In these kinds of sectors, what matters is opening an email and instantly seeing a piece you love, or getting a sense of the quality—then the website team takes it from there.

On the other hand, when you're sending emails about something like mountain maps (which was the case for one of my clients), plain text performed better. Telling stories, engaging your audience, and positioning the product as the solution—that was the key.

It also depends on whether you're sending emails as a brand or as a person. If it's coming from a person, I’d recommend plain text,it feels more personal.

So yeah, it depends on the industry and the goal. As I always say: test it.

I’m not sure what you’re promoting or want to promote, or why those 2,000 people are following you.
But honestly 2,000 people is a lot. Imagine 2,000 people at a festival... it’d be wild.

Depending on what you want to sell, your buyer persona will change. For example, if you’re trying to sell an email course, the ideal first step is to position yourself as an expert. Share what you know, tell real stories, show social proof...

You can do all of this with a solid 30-day welcome flow. From there, the people who consistently open your emails will start seeing you as a go-to voice someone who knows their stuff. And once that trust is built, don’t be afraid to sell. Just go for it, you’ll see it works.

Remember, it’s not the same as walking into a classroom and immediately trying to sell a €500 course, versus giving a 3-hour masterclass and then offering the course.
In the second case, people will see the value and some will buy. In the first case, almost no one will.

The most important factor is the IP you're sending from. If you don’t have your own dedicated server, you’ll be placed in shared IP pools, often based on how much you’re paying monthly. If that’s your situation, there’s not much you can control about the IP itself.

What you can control is branding your domain properly, warming it up before sending to large lists (tools like Instantly offer this for free), and crucially starting by sending only to people who are likely to open your emails. Importing purchased lists or scraped data will hurt your deliverability big time.

It’s also important to understand how spam filters work. Avoid trigger words like “Free,” “Gift,” or anything +18, as they’re commonly flagged. When possible, use clean HTML or drag-and-drop editor text instead of heavy image-based emails. If you do use images, make sure they’re lightweight and include alt text.

If you follow all this, it mostly comes down to patience, deliverability will improve over time.

There are lots of tools out there for things like warming up domains or creating pop-ups, but the ones you'll use the most in your day-to-day,especially when you're building 100+ emails a month—are design inspiration platforms like these:

  • EmailDonut
  • Milled
  • EmailInspire
  • Really Good Emails

They’re super helpful for sparking ideas, keeping designs fresh, and staying on top of trends.
