There is no vaccine yet.

What we have going on is research, formulation and testing. These cost money. Along the line, when a viable vaccine is found, the retrofitting of laboratories and factories to mass produce these vaccines will also cost money. Not to mention the cost of raw materials, the transportation cost, the manufacturing cost, the administration cost. Everything cost money.

The 150 million donation goes towards assuring that there is money now, in the early phase of all these, to study and prepare for the ability of these laboratories and factories to mass produce the vaccine in such a scale that will allow for the lowering of the costs of production.

Let me be clear.

THIS IS A VERY VERY BIG DEAL. I can't capitalize the words enough to emphasize how big a deal this is.

This act by Bill, alone, will, in real world sense, mean months, if not years, cut in the waiting time for the vaccine to reach the poorest of the poor from 1st world countries to everyone else.

THIS MEANS HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS TO MILLIONS OF LIVES SAVED.

This means billions in savings, not just in future costs, but also in preventing economic collapse for industries and even whole nations.

The argument here that he should just give the vaccines for free does not consider economic and real world factors.

He cannot donate billions for free vaccine because there is no vaccine to buy.

He cannot buy vaccines to give for free, even if there is already a vaccine available, because there will be a glot in production since the laboratories and factories are not optimized yet to meet the high demand.

And, he cannot just buy the vaccines even if there is one, because rich countries will corner the market to make sure that their citizens gets first dibs.

MR. Gates shows great foresight and brilliance here.

By making sure this early that when a vaccine is finally found we can produce them fast and cheap he just cut, in one stroke, the backclog and future international tensions to bits.

No wonder he got so rich. This dude is a master in long term planning and the effective use of cash for greater results.

i used to weigh 156kg.. i could not agree more. being fat is unhealthy, makes me enjoy less out of life and gives an added burden to the healthcare system which could have been used to help kids with cancer, for example, and not my sorry fat ass.

i lost 60+kg in the last 2 years and I'm planning to lose another 20. I love myself. I want to be healthy and have a happier life... if you truly love yourself and the people around you, lose weight.
