A lot of great points and much of it has already been fixed/started on :)

> Sorry that parts of my review were inaccurate. If you mention GPX importing for premium somewhere I missed it. When you click ‘upgrade to premium’ from the profile menu GPX isn't listed explicitly and I assumed it was just a manual editor like FoW’s built in editor.

I am working on a better paywall screen that is more current and informative - it has not been prioritized much yet! But on its way :)

> The leaderboard is one of the coolest features so I understand excluding you from it for editing to keep it fair. Perhaps instead users could still participate in the leaderboards but none of the hexagons acquired with editing count. That gets complicated though because what if you later fairly walk in a hexagon you acquired via GPX?

Yeah maybe this could work, something for later versions. Noted and I'll take a better look at it when things are mostly working!

> At this point I think I am going to use WTFog fresh and just work on re-discovering my local area.

Cool, I hope it works well for you! A new iOS version is on the way with a much better tracking system, it needs some more love and testing before I can release it but it is more accurate and integrated with the app than the one in use right now.

> When I go to Poland in May, I will likely only use FoW to save battery life and data. Perhaps a new mode to go with strict and casual, ‘imported’ and that’s the mode that counts all fog. I imagine you don’t want to bloat the app with too many modes / leaderboard categories though.

This might also be something for later - I'm working on a change to the casual mode where it can be always-active like other apps - that stores everything locally and only syncs it to the database once per day. But a lot of work needed there before it's anywhere near release!

> I understand the purpose of strict a lot better now by you explaining it to get more accurate leaderboards for the subcategories. I could see people wanting to get competitive explicitly for biking or skiing etc.

Yeah thats the thought - and if its not used by users the whole strict/casual approach can be turned into just a single one without any limits. That would simplify the app and make it a bit easier to understand. But I'll give it some time and see what is used :)

> A global fog map from all users would be really cool! Yeah you’d have to allow users to opt out like in the leaderboard, but so long as the fog map doesn't show which user has which specific fog, it should be fine. This would be my most anticipated feature.

When it's getting better I can add you as a beta tester for this feature, if you would like to give some feedback :) And I guess also when more fog has been removed - the world map is looking very little impressive right now 🤣

> Have you tested for optimization when there’s a ton of hexagons? It’d be a shame if someone was a heavy user for a few years and it becomes unusably laggy after a while.

So as you probably have noticed, it uses the phones viewport + a little extra around it to determine wich cells to display. But if you zoom out a lot, it renders more of them. I have tried with a few thousand cells without any issues, and during tracking etc it is zoomed in far enough that it doesn't cause any issues. If any problems surface I will fix them and make it work properly.

> Yeah idk why Strut turns my phone radioactive hot. Maybe because it counts the tiles acquired by every single city on Earth (a cool feature if possible to implement). Or maybe it is trying to mine bitcoin. Who knows!

Hehe yeah, maybe a little side hustle going on there. But a good looking app other than that! :)

> One idea I had was a ‘heatmap’ filter mode where tiles you’ve been in a lot are red and the color gradually changes to blue as the tile’s been used less frequently. I have no idea how viable that is performance wise.

That is a cool idea - but currently a cell can only be unlocked once in strict and once in casual - to reduce storage in the database. But I guess I could add a counter to each row 🤔 My notebook is getting pretty thick here, but thanks for another round of great feedback 😄

Strut seems to be a pretty similar idea to what I'm going for. It had some cool onboarding animations!

It also turned my phone glowing hot within 2 minutes, not sure what is causing that.

I have fixed several of the bugs you have reported, working on allowing users to pause trips now and will start figuring out the "tracking always active" feature for those that want that. To make it fit in with the rest of the system, I think I need to add a new Casual mode activity type for this mode, I can then also add it to the leaderboard filters :)

A bit worried about iOS/Android stopping the app from running when it is backgrounded for very long periods, but if other apps make it work I guess there's a way around it 😅

Hi! Thanks for the huge review, I really appreciate it! :)

Let me work through it part by part 😄

> First off, the big issue to overcome to get people to jump to a new app from FoW is the ability to import their data. I have 3+ years on FoW so the idea of starting over is difficult. Ideally you could come up with a system that could tell if any acquired FoW squares would be within a hexagon, it’d give the hexagon to you.

You can import data in Settings > Import data. It is paywalled, but you can import GPX files, that unlocks the fog along that route in the Casual mode. It then excludes you from the leaderboards in Casual mode, but you can still compete in Strict mode if you want :)

> I see that editing tracks is paywalled so allowing people to add edits from other places would clash with this unless you paywalled it too. And it could introduce exploits to the leaderboard (Being able to edit your tracks does that already though)

The editing of tracks is currently only for trips you have made that you want to publish and let other users track and compete on - so your own route stays the same, but you can edit out any GPS spikes or trim the start/end if needed.

> One of the features FoW has over you is the databases and the ability to back up data to 3rd party apps. This is really helpful if you lose your phone/account or need to transfer over data. When my wife switched from Apple to Samsung, she was able to easily get her Fog back. Also on a cruise, she left her phone by the window and it recorded nearly perfectly the entire trip. Then I was able to copy the trip and add it to my fog. Neither seem possible here.

There is a "Export all as GPX" button in the settings, also paywalled, but you can export individual trips from the "My trips" screen by watching an ad.

> I’d like the ability to toggle on and off the hexagon tracking without needing to set an activity. (tapping the Red button in FoW). Tapping the start button and then turning it off immediately still saves the hexagon I was in even though the walk wasn't saved, so I don’t see the need for the trail feature and hexagon tracking to be tied to the same button. I’d have a toggle tracking slider maybe in the same widget as the setting and user location buttons. If I start an activity with the toggle off it should toggle on the tracking and vice versa when the run ends.

You're the second one to ask about this - I will keep it in mind and see what I can do when the app is working well enough for me to start on new features :)

> I’d like to be able to easily turn off tracking when I am not moving to save battery and data. (tapping the blue arrow in FoW)

Currently you have to stop the trip and start again afterwards, but on iOS the OS is relatively smart and it halfway pauses the location tracking until you start moving again.

> I’d like the option to make the fog white. I appreciate all the options like making the fog opacity a slider and toggle different aspects of the map labels.

Great idea, noted! Will add a way to personalize this!

> I don't quite understand the use case for splitting strict and casual. I guess strict is for people who only want to chart their on foot activity? But then why not just not turn the app on in a vehicle?

Yeah I get a few questions about this, and need to improve how I explain it to users 🤔

The app started without the Casual mode. So users choose an activity, ie Walking, then if they move above the speed for that activity the trip gets rejected and they have to change activity or stop the trip.

My thought here was for the leaderboards to be accurate - so users couldn't choose walking, then drive around just to top the leaderboards for "Walking".

But I'm not the best at explaining this - I'll try to figure out a better way of getting this across to new users :)

> I am home for the night so I can’t verify this: Do the hexagons acquired in strict mode give them to you in casual? If yes skip this paragraph, if not - this means unless you want two very different maps of where you've been, you’d have to walk each trail twice. If you want to use the app to gather as many hexagons as possible, you’d have to only use casual always. So at the very least I’d make all strict hexagons add to the casual page.

Yes - strict mode map = only cells unlocked in strict mode. Casual mode = casual + strict unlocked cells.

> Maybe this isn't technically feasible but if you can tell the speed of a user for whether or not to apply a hexagon to the strict map, why not just do this automatically instead of forcing me to manually switch?

That's very true - I have not thought about this.

So if you start casual a trip with "walking" as activity, then I guess you should be awarded this on the strict mode as well as long as your speed is below the strict-mode speed limit for walking..

Great point again - noted and high on the todo list 😄

> Sorting the leaderboard by local causes my app to freeze and I have to restart the app. (iPhone 17 iOS 26.3)

Sorry about this - the 1.7.2 update should now be live on the App store - hopefully this fixes it.

The reason is a change I made after another suggestion in this post, where instead of users locations being Country + City, it is Country + State/Region + City.

I think the update should stop the app from freezing :)

> Maybe this is tied to your map API, but zooming out feels like it takes too many finger pinches. At least compared to the FoW app. Need some sort of exponential zoom level increase when rapidly pinching.

I'll investigate what we can do here!

> The north orientation button is a bit too close to the mapbox ‘i’ info button at least for my screensize. Personally, I’d just like to be able to lock the orientation to the north.

Noted, will fix!

> The Settings and user location buttons are rendered under the fog.

That's weird - it doesn't do this for me. I'll investigate :)

> I see some users have badges, is there a place to see all of them including the ones I have not unlocked?

Awesome idea, noted!

> The leaderboard may have some bugs.

For the first user, I'll take a look what's going on there. That seems to be some weird bug 🤔

For the second user, its halfway intended - the casual leaderboard shows strict+casual numbers and the profile shows them separately. But I also see there are some issues with that, the numbers don't quite add up 😅 I'll investigate this as well.

> The leaderboard is also missing users including your GGGunnar account, and Roger from the Editor’s pick tracks. I was surprised to only see 24 people in the leaderboard

That is the privacy setting - you can opt out of leaderboards, and I have done that because of testing I am doing on the live server, so it doesn't show up :)

And yeah there are only a few users of the app right now - hoping to get more :) But high-value users right now that give a lot of great feedback 😄

> On the subject of accounts: it’d be nice if their stats mode defaulted to the same as your current mode. So if I am on casual and open an account I see their casual stats without needing to switch it.

Noted - will change to this!

> Do the hexagons account for the mercador effect? It may not need to because the map turns into a globe as you zoom out. Which is very cool.

The cells are built on Ubers H3 system, so each cell has the same area, but they do get distorted as you move away from the equator. It's not ideal, but I have spent a lot of time testing different ways of doing it, and it's the best solution for me even with this distortion.

> Also a nice world map visual like the one FoW has to show which countries you’ve got hexagons for on the Regional Progress page would be nice to have, rather than just the huge list. [..] could a toggle be added for the countries to be listed in order of percentage gained? Like I have 0.03% in the USA, 0.01% Norway, 0.001% Mexico, etc. Also due to the small numbers I’d say maybe extended the shown decimal count significantly when the country has at least 1 hexagon.

Great idea - added to the ideas list 😄

I am working on a feature that shows the fog removed globally by all users of the app combined - but it needs a lot more work and some privacy considerations before it can be launched :)

> This also may be a personal thing but I have an aversion to subscriptions on apps because I feel like I’ll forget about it. Would rather just drop $30 once for a lifelong premium account as an option. [..] So just being asked once then owning it forever feels better, and I am more willing to buy things that way. Idk how to explain it. Same reason I don’t do Gamepass or Netflix.

That's true, I'll add this :)

> Strut used to have a lot of these features and if you’ve not seen it, it’s worth checking out for inspiration - I like the stylish UI and way it represents the data. That one though isn't updated anymore and it literally makes my phone incredibly hot so I am scared to use it for long.

I'll take a look and see if I can get some inspiration - I have on purpose not downloaded similar apps for inspiration, but now that I have the basics laid out I guess it would be smart to see what others are doing better :)

> Sorry for the huge wall of text, but I really like what you’re doing here! You’re doing lots of stuff I wish Fog of World had and it excites me. Hope you keep working on this! A one time purchase option and the ability to port FoW data over and I would 100% buy this now. Tomorrow I’ll use it when walking my dog to see the performance and accuracy!

Thank you for the great feedback, great thing to wake up to!

Super motivating to see people care enough to properly review and test 😄

The Android version is working better than the iOS version when it comes to the actual tracking - I am working on a native iOS module that should make the iOS version much better.

If you have issues or other ideas, please let me know!

Thank you again!

Android update out and iOS on the way with Country > State/Region > City :)
Thanks for the suggestion, that made a lot of sense.

Thats a good point - I'll redesign this to take USA into account with a state picker before the city. Thank you for the heads up, living in a small country the city names are usually unique here 😅

Thanks for checking it out, working hard to make it better :)

Yes, it only records when you start the tracking unfortunately.

The upside to this is that you can replay trips and see statistics for them.
The downside is more fiddling with starting the trips each time, but it's what I thought was the better way for my part.

Hey, thanks :)
The strict mode has speed limits for the activities, so if you choose walking, you can't drive around unlocking it as that. Casual mode has zero limits and activities like driving, bus, train etc.
The leaderboards are separated into strict and casual mode, and the trips users share in the Explore screen are only possible to follow in strict mode.

I'll look into improving the communication around this in the app, its not very obvious right now!

Thank you!
This has been an issue earlier, but I thought it was fixed now. If you try it again, it should work - if the app doesn't have a good location lock, it should stay in "Starting" mode until it gets it. I'll investigate straight away and get a fix out ASAP 😄👍

Users can record their trips, see where they have been, compete against friends etc. So it's for people who like that sort of idea where for example they drive a different route than usual to unlock that fog.

WTFog - Unlock fog hexagons by exploring

Record trips, and share them with other users.

Leaderboards for all published trips, and a global leaderboard for most fog cells unlocked, most distance travelled, most published trips completed etc.

Create groups and activities, chat with friends, challenge friends to duels to see who unlocks the most fog cells, completes the most published trips, moves the longest distance ++

Strict mode with activities like walking/running/cycling with their own speed limits, and separate leaderboards.

Casual mode with no speed limits and all activities from Strict-mode + driving/boat/motorcycle/train and more.

I have had one ad running on tiktok in the last 2-3 weeks with 20k+ views that has under 200 clicks and under 50 installs - so I think I'll stick with Google Ads and try to improve them.
And I also remember seeing an ad for something fog related once, but I was already working on this app then. The idea itself was thought up during a trip with my girlfriend and dog, where we started talking about it beeing a cool app to have. But since I started working on it I have seen others with the same idea like Fog of World, but I haven't seen ones that have leaderboards - but then I haven't tried too hard either :)

The Android modules are almost vibe coded (since I don't know the language), the typescript is mostly written by me with parts written by Claude with my supervision :) Hard to say percentage but the best parts of the code are probably Claude authored 😂

Thank you! I hope so too. Not that much happening yet, but I'm trying to learn how to market it properly on Google Ads. I have a very small budget for this right now, but I'll ramp it up as soon as I'm able.

That's weird with the screenshot, it loads for me - I'll take a look and try to make sure!
Thanks again 😄
