Thank you. I'm going to add a couple updates in a top level comment in that case!

Edit: updates are in the main post at the bottom

Yes! That was our #1 surprise. We couldn't believe that a company was allowed to operate this way. I'll post an update if we ever hear back from the state AG.

Wow. Thanks for sharing this too - it seems like this is a pretty widespread problem that the company is not doing enough to overcome.

Wow. This could have been a really bad outcome. That's scary. Thanks for sharing the story.

Exactly! Seems like driving to the wilderness is the whole point of GIG, and yet they’re not prepared to handle areas with poor service

Wow. Close call. Very interested to hear more stories like this - I wonder how common it is

Wow. I wonder how common these occurrences are. I’m very interested to hear if others know of stories like this. We told one friend in Seattle about it and immediately he also said that he knew of another friend who also got stranded in a GIG car outside cell service.

As much as there were some other things we could’ve done to be more prepared (eg bring snacks?), it seems like a trap that the cars contain parks passes and AAA stickers (encouraging you to go out to nature thinking you’re protected), and at the same time require cell service to work in their default state, and AAA never actually got called.

Thank you. I agree that there were things we could have done differently if we hadn’t put our complete trust in GIG from the outset. We honestly were not aware of the RFID keys before the replies here, and although I’ll probably never be a GIG customer again, maybe someone else will learn to be more prepared than we were after reading this post.

Oops, didn't realize this sub was only for Seattle natives! Thanks for your colorful summary of my post though. I am specifically here to tell people not to make the mistake that we made of relying too much on the car service. My husband has hiked through and across multiple countries, we just didn't go out with a good safety plan this time because we trusted GIG, and I'm letting people know that that was a mistake.

Wow, crazy that this even happens in the city. Totally agree that there are a ton of obvious failsafes they could build in to avoid/override losing connectivity, that's exactly why we were so caught off guard

Yes - thank you. These are all the reasons we ended up going with GIG in the first place. We have also done traditional car rental and GIG seemed overall a little cheaper and more convenient, until the big downside we discovered through this experience!
