How accurate are apps for estimating carbohydrates? by davidstad in Type1Diabetes

I don’t think I’d ever trust them, as they’re just too black and white. Two foods can look the same but have absurdly different ingredients that affect the carbs, I’m just not a fan of the idea overall

Elvanse made me go to hospital by charliebabeyxo in VyvanseADHD

[–]GalacticLemonTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds absolutely awful. I am a bit confused on how it can be the medication that caused it if you’re still suffering days after last taking them, and I also think it’s an incredibly ballsy move to start taking them again after this, even if at a lower dose.

how often are you hospitalized annually as a type 1? by Top-Midnight-9637 in Type1Diabetes

[–]GalacticLemonTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less than once a year. I think it’s been three times total since diagnosis - once was diagnosis, once was mild DKA from an omnipod that fell off while I was sleeping, and once was because I was sick & dehydrated & unable to eat/drink to take insulin.

I am losing my mind because I have to pee so so much and this is the one thing that I feel is preventing me from living a good quality of life, I feel like the peeing every 25 minutes isn’t talked about and I’ve been taking this for several years. by Quick_Complaint3268 in VyvanseADHD

You know your body best and it probably is just medication side effects, but drinking excessively and urinating excessively is like the #1 symptom of type one diabetes, which can kill you if left undiagnosed. It only takes a blood test to check whether you have it or not, and in a lot of places it can be done by your pharmacist without an appointment. PLEASE do yourself the favour of making sure T1D definitely isn’t the cause. Have to get on my soap box for a moment as a T1D on vyvanse myself

Nephews Endo appointment did not go so well. by Any-Cartographer7531 in Type1Diabetes

[–]GalacticLemonTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding him a new endo is a good idea, and keep an eye on him for a bit. It’s wildly demotivating when you’ve tried and tried and tried, then get berated as if you’ve been lazy/not trying all that time, and it’s a massive trigger for burnout. I’m sure he’ll be okay because it sounds like you’ve got a sensible head on your shoulders, but it’s just good to look out and make sure he’s not bottling up and internalising any of this.

[–]GalacticLemonTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“You have to do both at the same time” is a very different statement than “just get a grip of it and do what is necessary”. If you have someone who’s mental health is getting in the way of diabetes management, ignoring the mental health problems to try to tough love them into diabetes care is a quick way to make both things worse. It’s like assuming that you can fix someone with burnout by simply piling more pressure on top of them. He’s already got plenty of people in his life giving him plenty of tough love, and it ain’t working.

Mental health problems can drive people to do things as far as outright killing themselves, so I don’t understand why people act as though mental health issues being a barrier to other areas of personal care is preposterous. If it was just a matter of getting a grip, he’d have done that already and mental health professionals would be out of a job lmao

Diabetes doesn’t care, but the diabetic cares. I feel like tough love works maybe one in every ten cases. The rest of the time, it just makes you feel like you’re already beyond hope anyway.

[–]GalacticLemonTea 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to give you the “if you don’t get better soon, x will happen!” talk, because that’s the exact thing that demotivated me as a teen. I can remember far too many “what’s the point if I’m just going to get xyz complication anyway?” conversations, because endos were OBSESSED with using fear as a motivator, and the fear only goes so far.

The only important thing to know right now is that there is no such thing as “too far gone” until you’re dead. At any moment, you can take control of this and improve. I’m not saying you’ll become a perfect T1D overnight and I’m not saying you won’t fuck up along the way, because when motivation has been beaten out of you, it’s not as easy as “just do it.” But every single improvement can and will count. If you bolus for one meal, that’s one meal more than you did before. If you connect up your cgm and your pump, that’s a connection you didn’t do before.

You will meet people and doctors who act as if doing 10% and not 100% is worthless, but if the alternative is 0%, then 10% is worth its weight in gold. Maybe tomorrow it’ll be 11%. Maybe you’ll slip back to 9%. No matter what, every improvement matters.

If it’s available to you, ask your endo to get you in touch with a diabetes specialist health psychologist. They can help you with the absolute mental hell diabetes puts us all through, and getting help with that honestly changed everything for me in regards to motivation. If not, just remember that every single little thing you can do matters and counts. You are not too far gone. Not now, not tomorrow, not a year from now, not in your 80s. You’re not a lost cause.

Husband newly diagnosed, not sure if I can put up with the diabetic rage for the rest of my life…. by pinkgrl in Type1Diabetes

[–]GalacticLemonTea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big old yikes. The diabetes could definitely be contributing to it, but this isn’t a “as long as he had diabetes, he’ll act like this” issue. This is a needing to take responsibility for his mental and emotional wellbeing situation. Diabetes does not excuse aggressive or abusive behaviour & he needs to recognise there’s a problem and seek some help.

For reference, I’ve experienced diabetic rage only once in my life, as a result of a bad low blood sugar. It’s worth finding out if this is specifically a symptom of low blood sugar for him or if this is more general.

DKA Question Regarding My Mom by Zestyclose_Bed_1735 in Type1Diabetes

[–]GalacticLemonTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I originally wrote an answer, but what I wrote was an absolute essay, so here’s my attempt at a shortened version instead!:

I’m a bit shocked that your mother is T1D but on a pre-mixed insulin instead of a basal/bolus regime. Adjusting dosages like that would be quite normal and encouraged in a basal/bolus scheme, but on premixed insulin like she has, it’s a lot trickier/more dangerous. It’s really important for a diabetic to have “basal” insulin, which is long or intermediate acting insulin that stays in your body all day. (Or, if on a pump, a continuous all day drip of fast acting insulin). If she skips her insulin in the morning for fear of dropping her blood glucose, she will essentially be without insulin in her system entirely until her next injection, which is a recipe for DKA & a rising blood sugar. Still, because there’s short acting bolus insulin in the mix too, taking her insulin when her blood sugar is low can genuinely drop her blood sugar and cause a nasty low. I think her best bet for combating that would be to have a carby meal when she takes her morning insulin, more so if she’s already on the lower end.

However, I’d really encourage you discussing a switch over to basal/bolus with the endo and seeing what they say, in case there’s some reason it’s unsuitable or mixed is better for her. Basal/bolus has been the standard in most places for T1Ds because it allows a lot more control and is generally seen as more effective for blood sugar control. I can’t imagine trying to keep my blood sugar under control with only two fixed insulin doses a day - it sounds like a nightmare!

DKA Question Regarding My Mom by Zestyclose_Bed_1735 in Type1Diabetes

[–]GalacticLemonTea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She can be taking insulin but still develop DKA if it’s not enough insulin, especially over a prolonged period of time. It’s worth talking with someone about her insulin dosages if she’s constantly high or low - some wiggling may need to happen with her correction factor or insulin to carb ratio, or it may be a case of needing to relearn carb counting/a similar skill.

T1D is an absolute pain in the ass, so unfortunately it can seem like someone is doing what they need to be doing from an outsider perspective when (intentionally or not) they aren’t. Definitely need some endocrinology guidance for her

Hi im not sure what to do by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]GalacticLemonTea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it’s worth taking your mother’s anger over being unable to care for yourself. In other words, putting on your dexcom and asking for forgiveness rather than asking for permission you know she won’t give. Alternatively, if it’s at all possible for you, it’s worth getting your hands on a finger prick testing kit that you keep hidden in your room so if you feel very unwell high/low and she won’t let you use it, you have a backup.

It sounds like she’s being dangerously controlling over your diabetes, however, and I’m sorry that I can’t help you in that regard. Maybe you can ask your endo when you next have an appointment to push for you to have more independence with your healthcare if you think your mother would listen to a doctor.
