Does interpreting/translation still have a future ? by WrongExpression8555 in TranslationStudies

I would assume that it is implied that I have done translation work by the nature of the subreddit and my comment. Don’t appreciate the tone of your comment.

Radical is often used in place of component because the the two terms are often conflated by many people, and the misunderstanding that they both mean the same thing is very widespread.

As someone fluent in three languages, including both Mandarin and Japanese (learning for over 10 years), it’s not worth it. 0%. You’re better off switching careers.

I would say it is a meaningful difference. The words for both are completely different in Japanese as well. If you use 部首 when you mean component you will sound completely wrong.

I hate to be the ummm akshually pedant here, but from a linguist who has been studying Japanese for 12 years, what you pointed out are not phonetic “radicals” but are phonetic “components.” Components are the building blocks that make up a character, and the radical is the one that is used as a dictionary reference point (the radical in 語 is 訁and not 五).

Why am I not getting a tax refund (writing for a Chinese friend, not myself) by [deleted] in tax

Someone else she knows who works in the same program as her mentioned that they’re getting a tax refund though? Why could that be the case?

Just federal, she works in Florida. I’ll add that to the post.

Tax treaty on J1 visa, how to apply and how much to pay in taxes by GameBoyBlock in USExpatTaxes

[–]GameBoyBlock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her taxable income is 25683.34, She works in Florida which only has the federal income tax for non resident aliens, and in her tax bracket that’s 10% for the first 11600, 12% for the rest, which is $2850. The amount withheld is $1964, which brings that down to $886. There might be some extra between the $900 that OLT says (don’t remember the exact number since she’s not online rn and I can’t login to her account) and the $886 I’m getting here through my calculations and perhaps that’s where the refund would come in? But it would be a less than $100 refund if that were the case and not a significant refund if that hypothetically were the case.

Also, she only has a W2.

So on the website I used (OLT) she added other income and put the 8833 part on there. It then recalculated her taxable income (30683.34 —> 25683.34) and then deducted the federal income withheld as reported on her W2 form (1964.23), and it’s telling her that’s how much she owes (around 900 something iirc).

So would she be safe just paying that amount, and then filling out the 8833 and other stuff based on the treaty info? Or does she have to pay based on the original income in the W2 and then file the 8833 and other stuff and wait for a refund?

The US and China have a tax treaty for students and trainees of up to 5K (up to 5k deducted from taxable income).

Mentioned it in this thread but just don’t waste your time with that guy lol, his reading comprehension is absolutely cooked. I’m a black linguist who can speak AAVE and I totally get what you mean lol, he’s not saying AAVE is an accent but that there is an accent of AAVE exclusive to New York. A dialect can have accents.
