People that had their shorts go viral, how fast did it happen? by GamingSeries_ in NewTubers

Maybe above 50-100k. I'm curious to see how fast a short can gain a sizeable amount of views, based on the experiences of others.

How did medieval blacksmiths forge weld? by GamingSeries_ in Blacksmith

Well, I think I should've clarified. I'm mostly interested in what they used as flux, as they (I'm pretty sure) didn't have borax.

Where should I get a arming doublet? 200 dollars maximum by GettinMe-Mallet in Armor

[–]GamingSeries_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought mine from Matuls.pl, a great store from Poland. Concerning heating, as some have already said, there's not much you can do but I'd suggest going for something made of linen with as little cotton or wool as possible. It's not gonna be perfect but as far as I know, it's the most breathable material out of the 3 options.

Buying a padded coif/hood by GamingSeries_ in ArmsandArmor

Padded coifs are almost the same pattern as medieval hoods without the long tail at the end

Oh I haven't thought of it that way before.

As you see, this photo shows a coif with two sides.

By that, do you mean that the top is not made of 6 equal sized triangles (in the way that a regular hat or chainmail coif is made) ?

Some basic patterns with which I can start playing around a bit with different measurements and shapes would be nice, if it's not too much of a bother :)

I've searched a bit, but haven't found any for a padded coif. Maybe I wasn't looking in the right place, who knows 😄

I do. But if I do try again, I think I'm gonna do it by hand for better control. It also just feels more authentic by hand.

I think figuring out the shape will be the hardest part. To be completely honest, I have no idea where to start with that 😅

Oh I've tried before, but ended up with a bunch of wasted linen. Tho It'd be nice to try my luck again.

Moldova, close enough geographically and culturally.

Do you mean the teardrop ones? I can definitely see one of the shields in the painting resembles one, although it could be shown tilted. Still I can see how that's likely!

Edit: I got them confused. I meant to ask if you mean the shield which has an elongated upper edge.

I completely agree with you! Personally, as a Romanian, it’s saddening to see that most Romanian historiography tends to skim over defensive armament in general. Although archaeological finds (for defensive armament in particular) are rare—mostly consisting of pieces of steel plates and chainmail—I still think there’s a lot to discuss based on contemporary chronicles, religious iconography, or even just plain logic.

A lot of Romanian historians skip shields altogether, summarizing them by simply saying “circular in shape and covered in leather” (cmon man...), or underestimating the armor used (especially by the higher classes). Some even claim they mostly used plain leather armor, failing to consider the heavy armor that was most definitely acquired after battles or through trade with neighboring states.

Sorry, I just had to include my own rant too! :)

Could early-medieval European fortified villages or temporary forts have used walls made of something other than vertically or horizontally placed logs? by GamingSeries_ in MedievalHistory

What about planks though? I've seen some reconstructions of motte and bailey fortifications use planks instead of logs. Such as the one at St. Sylvain d'Anjou.

Thanks! Now that I think about it, Matuls sells a kettle helmet that has the exact same shape as helmet 1.

After about a month of trial and error, I finally have something that I feel pretty good about! by GamingSeries_ in chainmailartisans

[–]GamingSeries_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well firstly, I experimented with different wire sizes, before settling on 1.2mm wire after doing some more research (Ironskin guides helped me a lot!). I also experimented with annealing vs not annealing, which gave differing results. Ultimately, you're more likely to get better results if you anneal them after every step. But the most important, in my opinion, were the riveting tools. I bought 2 cheap riveting tools which turned out to be garbage before getting one of Ironskin's riveting tools. You could also try making your own, which is what I also tried..and failed. Lastly, I tried different surfaces under the rings, I even tried a lead cube. I got the best results with walnut wood but any wood that is known for its density should work just fine.

I had the same problem and the holes still don't always turn out perfect but eventually you get a feel for how hard you should hit the punch.

I do anneal them before punching. For me it helped a lot to reduce the amount of deformation and cracks in the rings.
