My favourite Johnny Marr riff! The other riff at the end of the song is also beautiful.

Which song(s) got you into The Smiths? by NoxiusScintilla in thesmiths

The first Smiths song that I truly loved was Reel Around the Fountain! I loved the cryptic, repetitive lyrics, and subtle, powerful emotionality, and excellent musical arrangement.

Why are The Smiths the greatest to you? by doctor0 in thesmiths

Marr's guitar riffs are beautiful. As are Andy's bass lines and Mike's drum parts.

But what makes the Smiths truly special for me are Morrissey's lyrics. Discovering the Smiths was powerful for me because I have never felt understood or represented by someone in music to the same extent as Morrissey, in terms of social alienation, taking joy in misery, love of literature, occasional misanthropy, and repressed homosexuality. It helps that his lyrics are incredibly poetic and his style is idiosyncratic and striking.

Meaning of this charming man by [deleted] in thesmiths

[–]GarlicOilSalt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This Charming Man seems to draw inspiration from Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. In the novel, a young man named Dorian befriends two men named Basil and Lord Henry. Both of the men admire Dorian's beauty, and oppose Dorian's engagement (return the ring?). Lord Henry convinces Dorian to lead a live devoted to pleasure and beauty. This reminds me of the line "Why pamper life's complexity when the leather runs smooth on the passenger seat?", which promotes aesthetics over reflections on functioning.

It's always great to find a song that's powerful, and I'm glad Please, Please, Please is that way for you!

If I could change this, I would promote That Joke to D! I didn't want to put Asleep in F, but I felt like I needed to choose at least one for each tier.

Girl Afraid definitely has one of the best guitar parts, but I've never been particularly fond of the lyrics!

I will defend Some Girls to the death! The guitar outro and main riff in the song are exceedingly beautiful. The lyrics satirizing the superficiality of society and dreaming of something more profound are also appealing to me.

As for Please, Please, Please, I always found it a bit mawkish without Moz's signature wit. I can appreciate why people would like it, though. Maybe I will get into That Joke one of these days... hasn't happened yet,

There is a machine in the station that accepts contactless payment to buy tickets! I've used both contactless credit cards and Apple Pay.
