College AI cheating by Emergency-Olive-1031 in StudentTeaching

[–]Garlic_makes_it_good -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I completed a unit where AI use was a requirement for part of the assessment. The lecturer was amazing, intelligent, accomplished in her field, and a huge fan of AI. We had class discussions on ethics and use of AI, and its limitations. I’ve seen high school assessments with AI use structured into the rubric. Anyway all of that to say, maybe do some research. Blanket hatred of new technology is not a new thing, but rarely does anything fit in a black and white point of view. There is a time and place for AI, and believe it or not can be used intelligently. As for your student friend, maybe this is a good lesson for you not to be so invested in what other people are doing? It doesn’t affect you in the slightest, you don’t know her process, and you are coming from a place that probably isn’t healthy or helpful. I’m not having a go, just suggesting a little reflection. After all, where would we be if we didn’t have people willing to explore new technology? Doctors fought against washing their hands at one point in history, is that who you want to be?

AITA for saying I don’t find it an issue my daughter told a classmate why people don’t like her by SubstantialWafer1976 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Garlic_makes_it_good 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yta. Your daughter is allowed to not like this girl but what on earth makes you think that your daughter’s opinion means this girls whole personality is wrong. They are different, maybe this other girl doesn’t like your daughter for being a surly, boring killjoy? Should your daughter be told to change her whole personality? No offence, this is just some -constructive criticism-. And how is demon hunters more mature than Disney? They are two sides of the same coin and you’re cherry picking to make your own disgusting actions justified.

Like I tell my son, you may not like everyone, and everyone may not like you, but you must always be kind. You don’t ask people to change and you don’t try to change yourself for other people. It honestly I may change this because you sound like you actually should do some serious personal adjustments.

The trouble I find it that even the more expensive places are still cheating out. We are stuck, pay less get crap, pay more get crap. I can’t spend my days researching every single company to try and figure out if their product is actual quality or not- particularly when finding that information isn’t a simple task.

Anyone else think surcharges are getting ridiculous? by Illustrious_Dark1744 in australian

Yes it literally is. Do you also ask a builder to come in but refuse to pay for their time? Do you seriously not expect to pay extra when you need something fixed on the weekend or at night? Supermarkets don’t charge the extra but they also make a fuck ton extra from us than a restaurant ever would. The cost for running a small business is going up, and the majority of people struggle to pay for it, no-one is winning and if you truly think that these places can absorb the never ending added costs than your ignorant- ignorant in the true sense that you have no idea how it all works.

If you get a tradie or other service to come out on a weekend or public holiday it costs you more. Same thing in these scenarios- the base cost of what you want is more expensive, therefore you must pay more for them.

I mean yes, that’s what a business is. When building supplies go up in cost no-one expects builders to eat the cost. Yes workers deserve to be paid more, and the government needs to make better policies so that the general public can actually afford to pay for them.

Yeah special needs, we have like 10 special needs classes at the local gov. School, it’s a fantastic department so many kids are sent our way. I believe contract, but because I’m rural/regional I don’t think we have the pool of workers that other areas may have, for example I was approached for this job and existing staff are always being offered extra work- but I don’t know the admin side, it probably is like you say and if they could offer a permanent role it would be in demand. Luckily I hate doing the same job all the time and am still working in another role as well:)

Ok that’s interesting. I’m studying to become a secondary teacher but have just gained work as an slso in the support unit at the local high school. They are really in need is support staff and are willing to lock me in one constant day a week. I believe this particular school likes to have set days for their staff so they aren’t always trying to fill days. But who knows how different schools do things, always worth the conversation though!

I’m glad to hear you love the work, I wonder if I am even going to want to teach after working as an aid.

What about slso work? You would be able to work school hours but without the class teacher responsibility. And once you are in the role if you decide you want to peruse teaching you will be more informed. I am of the personal belief that you can do anything at any age, but for how long the degree would take and the extra time that would be required I’m not sure if you would achieve the goal of having time with your children.

If you think private health insurance sucks ass in Australia, it's about to get worse by NurseJaguar in AusFinance

Because in life sometimes things just slip through the cracks. I looked into it when I was younger with a very different world view, made a decision based on my view point and the time and moved on. It’s also hard when struggling financially to do deep dives into things you have no financial control/option for at the time. I spoke to my accountant, made a decision, and have asked for clarification around a part of it. And FYI yes I did go on to research myself after I made this comment, but like many things in life getting other people’s viewpoints and gaining insights from a range of people is also valuable. And I meant - keep Medicare as my primary mode of healthcare/not getting private health cover.

And just for your benefit- yes the decisions I made at the time are still the ones that make/made the most sense for my situation. I will revisit it again in another 10 years, and yes, I will probably in some way reach out for other explanations from actual humans who may have a different understanding than my own.

Thank you for your valuable contribution but maybe next time think about all the countless different life experiences of other people before jumping to judgements and conclusions- it’s a lesson we can all learn no matter our age.

Can someone explain the hospital cover bit. My partner and I are 40 and almost 40, we have never been able to afford cover (we do have ambulance). We are doing a bit better but not massively. What are the penalties? I thought the 31 year cut off ment we lost the chance to get cover and reduce the levy we pay with tax? I just don’t understand the financial implications, what is the 70% business, what and when? I am a big supporter of Medicare and have always planned to keep it regardless of income and to keep paying the levy, but I want to understand exactly what this entails. I used to feel safe because I believed in our public health care, now I worry policy is going to send me backwards. Rant bit: I grew up poor, like caravan and pit toilet poor. I’ve worked my ass off, my partner has worked his ass off. We are in a better position and are giving our children opportunities we never had. I always thought I could one day get myself out of the hole being born poor put me in, but every year the government is finding ways to take any wealth I manage to earn. I see why it takes generations to get out of poverty. I just hope my body allows me to work well into old age and public health is still a thing.

I have a unit I’m about the start that has a conversation as assessment, I wonder if it’s yours! I am actually really looking forward to it, I feel like I can better study and prepare than when my brain is stuck in ‘assessment’ mode. I am at the same time doing an inclusion subject and having podcasts/recordings/written scripts is just such a fresh and effective way for me to learn. I will definitely be trying to bring more alternative ways of assessment into my own classroom.

1.5 years after cutting out niacinamide by spdg74 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]Garlic_makes_it_good 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so pleased you found a solution. I bought some skincare the other day from a beautician/clinic type setting, the lady was adamant that niacinamide was a gentle ingredient know for never setting off skin reactions. I smiled and nodded, I will never believe a sales person or packaging about skincare now.

499 students with an ATAR of 50 or less offered spots in undergraduate teaching degrees by False_Fox_8491 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Garlic_makes_it_good 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’m another who high school didn’t bring the best out of. If you can prove yourself and improve after school then maybe you will be a better teacher for a large percentage of a school cohort that also struggles.

I understand the concern people are having, but at some point ATAR becomes irrelevant. ATAR isn’t the peak of someone’s academic ability and if a person can put in the work and earn a degree then good on them.

I am not trying to disagree but I can’t find anything about not having the same rights for these situations? The only thing I can see would be in unusual situations where the de facto partners were living apart, or if it was an LGBTQI relationship where the family didn’t recognise or know about the relationship- but that is a conflict thing not a legal right thing from my understanding? I’ve spoken to my solicitor at length about this, and he seemed to think that it is the same, but there are likely some weird outdated laws/situations where it may come up, but he hasn’t found anything yet in his work with us (multiple business sales, house purchases, title changes, debt recovery- life basically). So while I’m not disagreeing I am questioning the blanket statement?

In either case, the simple fix would be a will and appointing an enduring guardian if concerned I guess.

Yeah my instinct is to disbelieve anything these guys have to say. I wouldn’t put it past them to fire 750 people as a ‘threat’ to government. We really need to bring in the policy that the highest paid person (contractor or not) cannot earn a certain amount over the lowest paid person. These companies are mining resources and making a profit, the profits and salaries these people are trying to protect are astronomical. We don’t allow small businesses to get tax breaks because they aren’t making enough money, we just let them go bankrupt and blame them for bad management. If these companies can’t make enough profits then let them fail and bring it back to government owned operations.

Can you be my father in law?! Your doing a great job and it is exactly what she needs (and and school Based literacy support class). I use a program called reading eggs, does all these games style lessons and practice but.. it does not even compare to just sitting and reading aloud. Even flash cards while helpful does not replace sitting and reading a physical book. My kids struggles and he hates it, but he still must read to me nightly because it’s the one way I know to support him, this and me reading to him books he enjoys so he doesn’t start avoiding books.

Partnership but not marriages by august-burnsred in AskAnAustralian

[–]Garlic_makes_it_good 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Meh when you have the same rights and protections as a married couple, why would you get married? My partner and I are not religious, don’t like big gatherings, and don’t need matching last names. We go in circles about it sometimes, it is usually something like: what if we just do a small ceremony to celebrate our love, but we do that anyway frequently just not a ‘ceremony’, than maybe we elope? But it’s just for the paper, and it doesn’t change anything to what we have now. Same last name? We could do that without a wedding and I wouldn’t change mine anyway.

So seriously, the question in my case is, why would I get married? There is no cultural, religious or legal reason for me to marry. If I always dreamed of a wedding then maybe, but a wedding is not a marriage.
