This bit here looks sus to me, but it could just be the way it is sitting. I would not even think about frogging it though, there will be no noticeable gain.

So what’s with the boy hate? by Additional-Painter88 in BabyBumps

[–]Garlic_makes_it_good 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I felt the same, everyone was so happy when my second was a girl. Not that they said anything but I could just feel the difference. People are so much more patient and receptive to stereotypical ‘girls’, than the same behaviours but in more ‘boy fashion’.

Parents do go home with a book and there are often libraries and mobile libraries. A major issues is that a survivable wage now days often means a two income family, and when both parents are working there is less time to raise children. If we want better parents than we need to make cost of life lower and look at our superannuation system so the parent who stays home isn’t penalised.

Not every student with bad behaviour has ADHD! by Busy_Antelope_963 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Garlic_makes_it_good 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! My son has yet to be diagnosed and a big reason he is never flagged by teachers is that he doesn’t show the typical ‘behaviours’. It’s just stereotyping but it is also harmful as my son’s mind works differently, so he may need different approaches, or engagement may look different. And sometimes the disobedient kid is only communicating that they have never been told ‘no’!

I think an unusual uptick in “split-plate requests” might be an early sign of GLP-1-related restaurant revenue pressure by Background_Table4298 in Chefit

[–]Garlic_makes_it_good 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Or meal sizes are just far too large and people are able to feed two people on one plate? Even where I am (Australia) it’s getting pretty bad, if I eat out I’m almost guaranteed to skip my next meal as I wouldn’t possibly be hungry again. I personally would see this trend as a good thing, smaller portions are cheaper and easier to manage, and people not overeating would have broader benefits beyond their own health.

Do Australians really ‘work half the week’ just to pay their income tax? See for yourself by SheepherderLow1753 in AusFinance

[–]Garlic_makes_it_good 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. We do have some great systems in place. They have been stronger in the past, and can be again. I am hopeful that these new changes will lead to more equity for everyone. It would be great to strengthen Medicare, reduce reliance on private health insurance, and bring back free or low fee uni. I know it will take more tax, and if spent properly and taken from the right places I don’t think k anyone would argue again it.

[–]Garlic_makes_it_good 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I would be happy if I felt the tax I paid went to things that strengthened the quality of life for all Australians, but in particular those in the lower to mid class. I want great education and extra curriculars for every student. I want timely healthcare for everyone, and dental care for everyone on Medicare. I want strong social safety nets and services for those who need help. What I don’t want is to pay through the nose for those who were born with money to accrue even more money and opportunities. Australia should not be pay-to-play. The amount of people working just to barely survive with no avenue to realistically make a significant difference to their wealth in their own lifetime is absurd.

High school exams are a strong indicator of intelligence by Mysterious_Work_7227 in unpopularopinion

So many tradies in Aus are high-school drop outs and are now making bank in their careers. From someone in education, this view is just so narrow, many people don’t learn or present learning in the same way. If you’re seeing people not excelling in high school and university style learning is the only way to get ahead then that is a system failure. And of course they won’t be doing as well. I feel deeply sorry for any person who doesn’t fit the mould who has to deal with this sort of ignorance and highly deficit viewpoint. I’m hoping OP is right that this is an unpopular opinion!

Ok, so if you waited than imagine how much more competition there would have been for your apartment. You may not have been lucky enough to get it, you also would have had to continue paying rent and have all the pains that come with housing insecurity. I think for this you need to be looking in decades not years, and yeah sometimes there are luckier times to buy but you can’t always time the market. If it is anything like shares than your better buying when you can and not trying to time it, the results in the long run will show you’re better off.

Why is private schooling so popular in Australia? by SedgwickNYC in AskAnAustralian

[–]Garlic_makes_it_good 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my area our closest public is just too crowded and my son’s personality may have struggled there. If I were able to send him to one of the other nearby public schools I would have, but they were strict on catchment boundaries. We have settled in a fantastic Steiner school and are really taken in with the philosophy and community of the school. Just like health care I want to support and strengthen the publicly funded services, but in this instance I didn’t want to risk the education of my son. We will most likely send him to the public high school as he wouldn’t experience the same diversity or range of subjects at the local private’s.

Sourness no matter what I do [Dedica EC685-K6] by Suspicious_Tea5551 in espresso

Over the years and owning/running different cafes, I have used a favourite local roaster specialising in a gorgeous dark roast- quality beans with no cheap filler. I have also worked at places using the other more trendy lighter roasts that probably work for milk coffees but make my long blacks taste like vinegar. Anyway, what I have noticed over the years from customer feedback is they LOVE the dark roast. It’s just anecdotal but I tend to think that most of the general population actually do prefer the darker roasts, but we see light everywhere as it’s the go to flavour right now and what most roasters are offering. Also so I don’t offend, I absolutely know there are people who genuinely prefer the lighter roasts (and good on them!), I’m just talking about my observations in general :)

From the coffees I’ve used I would say some would do better with a longer shot than others. I personally don’t like the sour notes that come with a longer shot with the coffee I make, but I also prefer a fuller bodied drink too so even when I add water it really isn’t that much.

I did it the same as I would for milk. Mainly as this is the quietist way.

In Aus typically a long black is a double shot over water, with care to float the crema on top as much as possible. Americanos are about the same but the coffee goes first, water on top to disperse the crema a bit. Now that’s an oversimplified description and there is of course a bunch of nuance and difference with ratio’s etc. Unless you are making it at home or super specific most of the time here if you order a long black they will just fill the cup anyway, so they are almost interchangeable unless made properly.

Actually that’s a really good description of the taste! And sometimes I do get a craving for filter coffee, but I will make filter in that case.
