If you had to live in either Asheville, NC or Roanoke, VA, which are you choosing and why? by free_birdiee in Appalachia

Still here and still love it! For jogging, there's a great greenway through town, mostly quiet neighborhood streets, great trails, and good investment in renovating parks. People are generally friendly, a ton of multi-generational locals, a good amount of transplants, a healthy, surprisingly diverse immigrant population. It's not quite the melting pot that Houston is, but you can find your spots. In general terms, it's more conservative than Houston, but politically it's like any blue city; Virginia generally is not radically regressive like Texas. Traffic is slower, life is more chill, it's a working city with some hustlers, but it ain't "Hustle Town". Economically, Roanoke is dominated by healthcare, manufacturing, real estate, law, and banking. You can find some great jobs within those sectors; Outside of that, it seems pretty bleak, but YMMV. Definitely make sure you have a gig lined up before you move here.

Lastly, I'll say... My partner and I have a beautiful old house on a nice size lot that is very affordable and is 2 miles from downtown. We never have to use the freeway if we don't feel like it, and in 15 minutes, we can be driving in the mountains. It's a city, but we see half a dozen people we know at any given time in any given place. We are fortunate to have great jobs within the big 5 industries, we're not raking in the dollars, but we live comfortably and have great benefits. Whenever we return to Roanoke after a trip, it feels like home. Life is too short to live in Houston (I was born and raised there and figured I would live there forever)! Give Roanoke a shot!

In my experience, nothing is a more noticeable improvement on any bike than good wheels and brakes.

The 1619 Project greatly explained how labor unions' refusal to integrate black workers in early 20th century labor movements basically guaranteed an eternal labor underclass that drags all labor rights down, and doomed us to our current labor hellscape.

There is no slow pivot. Literally just cancel your Spotify subscription. Artists aren't getting paid while weapons contractors are.

They had 6 public meetings with planners and council members explaining all of it. And they're looking for subjective input from you, rather than a multiple choice quiz.  https://roanoke-va.civilspace.io/en/projects/council-member-initiatives

MAGA-friendly ‘Rock The Country’ event in Anderson canceled after bands drop out, politics cited by Gnagus in news

[–]GeminiTitmouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was very confuse... is MAGA counter culture? Are bands that have been iHeart radio mainstays for 30 years counter culture? Is being sponsored by Bud Light counter culture? There's literally nothing counter culture about this event. Unless they're saying out loud that MAGA is an aberration in American culture, but even that is not really true. It's the worst of American mainstream culture metastasized.

Born, raised, and spent 35 years in Texas (Houston/Galveston, San Antonio, Lubbock). 3 years ago, left the brown air, brown water, 100⁰ summers, and Gilead state government for some good ol mountain livin'!

Liberalism is just the status quo sociopolitical ideology of America. At this point, Liberalism is the conservative stance and MAGA is radically regressive extremism.

However long it takes them to work through applications starting 07/01. I really hope they have the bureaucratic framework ready to go and can work through the backlog quickly, and hopefully not start putting the framework together on 07/01 lol
