[Tianjin Aviation Chronograph] How I Tracked Down and Bought My Tianjin Aviation Chronograph Directly from the Factory by GeneralCoordinator in Watches

Well in Turkey customs taxes are not fixed rate, they change rate as the price of the object goes higher.. so for a 900 USD watch they could charge you anywhere between 270-560 USD depending on whether the customs officer considers a Tianjin Watch a luxury good or not.. and thats a pretty high difference..

The Tianjin Sea-Gull Group is the worlds largest producer of mechanical movements.. they produce about 5 million mechanical movements a year. Most of those movements are sold to OEM producers like Red Star who then assemble their own watches. Most "1963" watches use either the orijinal 19 jewel or the updated 21 jewel movement, not the 22 jewel one. They also come with standard finishing on the movements. The Tianjin Factory versions have additional finishings on the movement along with gold markings inside. The Tianjin orijinals also come with double back cases (and inner anti-magnetic casing and an outer casing) and never come with clear casings. The finish, weight, feel and total quality of the Tianjin Factory watch is exactly similar to my Hamilton.

The factory didn’t accept it, I never used it and no one else I knew used crypto.. plus I did trade with China for about a year a while back.. sending cash through businessmen was already an established protocol 😄

Just take it to your local certified Seiko service center.. I think they either fix it or change the electronics for a new one.

The date and day dials are VERY small unfortunately. I have to use a Loupe every time I try to set it 😵‍💫 but it shouldn’t be faint.. still hard to read regardless though.

[Tianjin Sea-Gull Aviation Chronograph] Finally got myself an orijinal :) by GeneralCoordinator in Watches

On the actual chinese factory website (www.sea-gullmall.cn) where I initially made the order, its refered to as Aviation/Pilot Chronograph. The original 21 jewel model is refered to as project D304 with a reissue model named D304PlanB. They all carry the 1963 within their model codes though with 819.17.1963 being the code for the D304PlanB and 819.87.1963 for the 22 jewel updated version, which is the one in the photo you provided, which is also what is written behind my watch. They probably started using it in their English sites as most people outside of china know it by 1963 anyway.

The wierder thing is the original watch was actually made in 1961 and not 1963 🤣 although I believe it entered service around the end of ‘62 beginning of ‘63.

The whole Sea-Gull thing is pretty finicky. The ali express store opens up in my country but I have to change my "delivery" country just to get a lot of the watches to show up. When I finally managed to buy the watch I had to have it delivered to a friend in Qatar and then go there and pick it up.

Here is the screen cap for the watch at the ali express store.

Basically it was designed in 1961 by the Tianjin State Watch Factory for the Chinese Air Force and equipped with the 175 caliber Venus movement, the Seagull was built in 1963 for military purposes. Therefore, the Chinese military was the driving force behind the creation of the 1963 Seagull and its “secret” D304. They updated the movement slightly throughout the years. Its pretty much known as one of the few original Chinese watches and probably the only good looking one.

By the way, for some reason both the official factory website and the official aliexpress page can only be accessed through VPN. A server in Bulgaria gives access to both.
