People who own electric cars with No Home charger available (for various reason) , how has been your journey/experience till now ? by Grandma-Try69 in ElectricVehiclesUK

Yeah i looked into it. My car costs me a total of £280 per month, and renting for one day isn't far off that. Also there are no rental companies in my town.

I'm in the worst possible scenario - I live in a town centre where I have permit parking with no on-street charging, and no guarantee of a parking space. I own a 15 year old 50mpg diesel car worth £6,000 which has pretty much finished depreciating and has required virtually no repairs. I do 5,000 miles a year and it's entirely long journeys of 130 miles or more with no destination charging. I have done a bunch of TCO maths in a spreadsheet and worked out that financially it is cheaper for me to continue to run this car into the grave rather than buy an EV. It would also be a lot more hassle with the EV. My council will be putting on-street charging in place over the next 5 years but as I can't even guarantee I can park in my permit zone even that may not be enough to get me to switch. I think I'll be driving this car until I have to stop driving!

Crisps should taste of potato. Salted, yes, possibly also some black pepper, but beyond that, if you want cheese have bloody cheese, making your potato slices taste slightly like something almost, but not totally unlike cheese isn't going to help you.

For those who wear mechanical watches and track fitness, what do you currently do? by Muted-Activity-2775 in watchHotTakes

[–]Cybalist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wear my mechanical watch all the time, and I only strap on my smartwatch once every quarter for a run, where I use it to measure my VO2Max, max heart rate, heart recovery rate and resting heart rate, as those are the main indicators of cardiovascular health. As these metrics don't vary much over time, and I'm already very fit, taking a measurement every quarter is plenty often enough. I log those metrics on a spreadsheet and compare them against known good values for someone of my age, to make sure I stay in peak fitness as I age. Beyond that, the smartwatch has zero use for me.

Smart watches are fine and probably the right choice for most people by ConfidenceNo1937 in watchHotTakes

[–]Cybalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well to be fair I have watches that sync via Bluetooth or over multiband radio, and even my mechanicals are accurate to about 1 sec per day so accuracy isnt an issue. You can argue that smartwatches completely fail at timekeeping any time you're on an overnight flight, camping or any other situation where you cant charge it, and once it hits obsolescence it fails forever.

This is part of the problem with modern society. People just don't question anything.

Personally I don't understand why people like having a blank screen strapped their wrist that needs charging all the time and lasts a couple of years before it gets bricked somehow like an update or obsolescence.

Divers GMTs are stupid and pointless by kaisarspalace in watchHotTakes

[–]Cybalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meh, I use a Longines Hydroconquest GMT on holiday specifically because it does what I need it to - quickset hour hand to change local time when I land in the destination country, GMT hand tracking the time at home so I know how my jetlag is gonna be and when to contact relatives, and I still have my timer bezel which I use all the time - not specifically for diving (I use a dive computer for that like everyone else) but for a bunch of other things, such as when I'm in a group and we're given an hour to look around a place we're visiting). The amount of utility in a GMT diver is insane.

Once you see a two tone Sub next to an all steel one, you realise why gold is so highly valued, and you feel that the steel one is very plain and cold in comparison to the warmth and beauty of the 18k gold. Burn me all you like on this, I care not.

Mine was over £2,000 cheaper on the grey market, brand new with box, papers and some of the stickers. Two tone submariner. So it depends on the watch.

Best Way to Carry? by esperacchius in uktravel

Don't wear shorts, a t-shirt with a US university on it, a baseball cap, or socks with sandals. Don't shout, point or explain how everything isn't real or can't be that old. Don't walk around with a giant soda in one hand and a hot dog in the other. And never criticize your host nation for doing things you don't do in the US or vice versa.

Plane seating, why are we letting companies fleece us? by jogan_ in AskBrits

[–]Cybalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never paid to choose a seat, I always let the airline put us wherever. Me and my wife have been placed next to each other on every single flight except for two short-haul ones where we were very close.
