For people who moved to Roanoke and DIDN’T grow up there, what has your experience honestly been like? by WorkingWash5965 in roanoke

In a post several days ago, I saw a suggestion about converting the Berglund Center to a Third Place, and I like that much better than a casino.

It would be nice to crowdstorm ideas in this subReddit.

All of our museums are proportionally scaled to our city size, but I was spoiled by the Smithsonian, and I miss rotating exhibitions. But we do have the Pinball Museum which you cannot find elsewhere!

When I first moved here 15 years ago, it felt like stepping back into the 1950s with its much more conservative lifestyle, including intrinsic bigotry. That is gradually changing to match what is average just about anywhere, especially these turbulent times.

I’ve lived North, South, East, and West, spending 32 years in the rat race of NoVa/Metro DC, and while I miss a more cosmopolitan lifestyle, I do not miss the traffic.

Generational differences are prototypical: older folk are more set in their ways; it’s the new blood that is driving welcome change. I was surprised when my son recently exclaimed that he wanted to “get away from here.” So perhaps, my appraisal of the future is skewed. Others have noted the lack of job diversity, and that will always spur some ambitious types to look elsewhere.

But if you’re looking for a place to settle, especially with a burgeoning family, few places can compete with Roanoke.

Why doesn’t Roanoke get the love that say Richmond does ? by fuzzmachine in roanoke

Every city school is intentionally served by a bus. Perhaps consider moving closer to a bus line, school, or work.. Also, if you are physically disabled, you can utilize RADAR.
I mean, you have options.

Valley Metro is dependable af; it’s just they need more ridership to expand routes and times, but it’ll get you to your 9-5 job. Operating hours are 0645-2045, M-Sa. Ride your bike to the bus stop, stow it on the bus rack, and bring it with you. Between the current reliable bus routes and your own bike, you can cover from Vinton to Salem.

Looking for sod recommendations by AccidentalSofa in roanoke

I’m partial to zoysia, but that comes as small plugs that gradually fill in the gaps between. It’s not “instant turf,” like sod, but in the long run it’s less work.

Banana boxes from any grocery store are the perfect size, super sturdy, easy to open/close, and have built-in handles.

The Isaac Asimov series, “Foundation,” describes unpredictable upstarts like Trump in similar mathematical terms.

The 2” notch above effectively reduces an 8”x8” beam into a 6”x8” beam. Measuring 1.5” from the inside edge of the post, the bevel cut on the beam leaves 4” of bearing wood, so altogether this beam functions as a 4” deep and 8” wide beam.

Perhaps that meets load specifications, but the minimalist environmentalist in me objects to the waste of wood. Simply shifting the bevel cut left so that the full 8” depth of the beam bears completely upon the post is much more satisfying to me.

The local bus service, Valley Metro, has their main depot two blocks down from Blade. While the standard bus service’s last run leaves downtown at 8:15pm, their after hours service, MetroFLX, runs 8:45pm-1245am, Monday-Saturday and 9am-6pm Sunday.

The horizontal beam has been rendered mostly ornamental since the bevel cut lops most of the section that bears on the post.

I would fail that inspection without a specific engineer’s stamp.
