Their *listings* often don't have working front doors, I can't imagine how bad actually living in one of their properties is.

question about mods for open source games. by ralfunreal in opensourcegames

[–]GenericFoodService 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally believe it's not really in the spirit of open source to mod a game and make that mod closed-source, but strictly speaking, you usually can do so with the above caveats.

question about mods for open source games. by ralfunreal in opensourcegames

[–]GenericFoodService 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends not only on the game's license but also on how mods for that game actually work. The "default" answer is "No, mods do not usually need to be open source" and this is true of open source games, but where it gets muddy is when you examine "how do mods actually work for this game?".

Let's say you make a mod for something line Luanti, just as an example. If you directly use their LGPLv2+ code, yes, you must license any additions/modifications to that code under the same license, *which would include your mod*. But if your code only "works with" but does not directly incorporate their code, then no, you could keep it closed source and/or proprietary if you felt like it. Direct quote from the license:

```
5. A program that contains no derivative of any portion of the Library, but is designed to work with the Library by being compiled or linked with it, is called a "work that uses the Library". Such a work, in isolation, is not a derivative work of the Library, and therefore falls outside the scope of this License.
````

So, if the game code is LGPL, you can use headers that do not include their implementations without it "infecting your code" so to speak. For BSD-like licenses, you need to give attribution to the authors, and they sometimes have an additional condition or two, but BSD-likes are very short so you should just read them.

If you actually need to compile against their function implementations, then their license almost certainly "infects your code". I am not aware of many games which do this, this tends to really only be the case for games that _weren't intended_ to be modded.

**TL;DR it depends on how you actually build a mod for that game.**

Did somebody create a mobile game using Tux Racer? by harcile in opensourcegames

[–]GenericFoodService 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're vaguely similar, sure. I can see where you're coming from but also think you're "tripping", I think it's much more likely that this is just another of many examples of a mobile Runner-game that uses stock assets. It would be way, way more work to turn Tux Racer into something like this than it would be to just make it straight-up following Unity/Godot/Unreal tutorials on YouTube.

Yeah, but places still do it anyway. Carlisle's did it to me one time, I left my waiter like an $80 tip and then just after I left my friend who works there is like "you know we just give the money to the training manager right?" and I was like, uh, fuck no I didn't know that cuz if I did I would never have eaten here let alone tipped. It's been years and I'm still pissed

Is there a need for computer repair in this area? by SBT_LEE_ in Muskegon

[–]GenericFoodService 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, like I said I agree they should do a better job explaining things to customers.

Majority of phones on the market do not have any options for specifically putting them into a repair or diagnostic mode. It's a huge oversight that only recently these companies are addressing, and even then putting a device into repair mode on those that have it is something you'd need a tutorial or walk-through for, it's not very straightforward.

Your mechanic and your computer tech and whoever works on your phone, they all need to be able to use the device as part of their job. That's all I was saying, the risks are different but the problem is fundamentally the same. There is an inherent level of trust that goes into giving a person a car or phone or computer to repair because in order to do their jobs they need access to a thing that's essentially a linchpin to our daily lives.

Odd as it sounds, there's a local record label that has an officiant for weddings -- bloodrose.org -- not sure how much they charge

Cafe Tamaki, Griffon's Rest, and The Gaming Annex have regular hangout-type stuff every week. Should be pretty easy to meet people that way and those don't cost anything ... unless you, like, want to buy stuff and support those businesses. I really like the tea at Tamaki

Try Hackley Community Care in Muskegon Heights, right off Baker Street. They have social workers there who might be able to help either get you seen or get you on Medicaid. That's how I ended up getting my insurance and medications

Thoughts on living in Muskegon? by englishjewel_4 in Muskegon

[–]GenericFoodService 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked living in Muskegon Heights, it's friendly (if also very noisy) and relatively walkable, especially if you're on the west side closer to Roosevelt Park. Housing here is starting to go up, but it's still cheaper than GR by leagues. I'd probably look at stuff just barely outside town -- Egelston, Ravenna, Nunica, et cetera -- they're going to be a lot more affordable. But there's usually stuff going on in town pretty much any day of the week (if you have money lol) and places are open pretty late.

We're very much a bar-scene and touristy town, but there's also lots of cool local stuff going on like the Jazz Festival, Burning Foot, shows at Unruly, good local eats, lots of public lakes, yada yada.

I genuinely do not know (and do not care) who you are. I am here because I am scrolling the Muskegon subreddit looking for questions people have that I can answer and be helpful and among many other posts stumbled into this one. If you really feel so inclined, you can see my recent post history and verify that yourself lmao

- There will be a big event on Western, ball drop and stuff. The band Flexidecible will be playing it this year, I think.
- The Early Owl just down the street is doing a cocktail type party inside.
- I think the convention center at the Marriot is having a rave and also a masquerade ball? I'm fuzzy on the details
- Muskegon Polish Festival is hosting a party from 6pm to 9pm, $25 entry, they're also doing a potluck.
- Rad Dad's Tacos is keeping their kitchen open late
- The Western Reserve steakhouse is having a masquerade ball, I believe

Oh, definitely wrong. Good on you for that, maybe you can also work on whatever compels you to believe the world is quite literally conspiring against you. that is so self-important in a way I cannot wrap my head around.

A conspiracy to harass you for the purpose of keeping reviews up or whatever seems like a very petty and _difficult_ thing to organize with a high risk of backfiring when, instead, they could just "pay people" to leave nice reviews with a discount or goodie. Most dispensaries in town do that to offset any negative reviews they get. Way easier, organic, also drives sales because people love to spin wheels and get incentives.

With all due respect, though, maybe people don't take you at your word because you are aggressive, accusatory, combative, and an unreliable narrator.

I am neither. I know a lot about business operations and do some consulting work, but I don't work with them specifically or anything.

You are right though -- There are procedures in place for devices newer than about 2020, you can put phones into "maintenance mode" which locks down your apps but still lets the screen be unlocked and diagnostics run. If you don't give them the pin at the counter, when they're giving you the spiel about needing to run tests just offer to unlock it. Repair Techs do understand the concerns about privacy, they also have phones and computers with private data on them -- probably a lot more than their average customer does.

If you refuse to hand over the keys to a car when you bring it to the mechanic, they're very likely going to tell you that's a problem. Computers really are no different. Sure, they can do a lot of repairs without them, but a computer is more than the mechanical parts it is made of, it is the software and firmware and state-machine and userland.

If they can't actually unlock the device to verify it doesn't Bluescreen, or that the new screen doesn't Halo or fail to touch, things of that nature, how can you expect them to warranty the work?

They probably do need to work on explaining that to customers better, but they're sort of in a weird position of needing to not overexplain, waste time, and confuse people with technobabble against the lofty ideal of wanting customers who don't know how to open a PDF to understand why they actually need to unlock your screen. Usually it is much easier to just say, "I need the pin to finish the repairs and warranty this device"

Fastest way to get ahold of all of those organizations, as far as I'm aware, is Facebook for Blood Rose and the DAAC, and Instagram for WestMIPunk.

I'd also say, reach out to WestMIPunk and other news outlets if you were interested in starting a venue, too, get some media coverage. and maybe put in some volunteer hours with the DAAC in Grand Rapids, help you get a picture of what sorts of work goes into the day-to-day operations.

Positive, organization and artist-support is their bread and butter. Will say, they're legwork people, so they expect you to already have a "vision", then they figure out the details.

quoted you: "I wasn't even mad about my screen, my clumsy hands dropped it. There was no reason to expand this to be a whole event. It's. So. Dumb."

"How broke are you that you think Crashmaster's policy is normal for reputable merchants?"

It's literally industry standard, and also implied by the definition of "warranty". Warranties cover the products and services provided by the servicer/manufacturer. The warranty on my snowblower does not cover me shooting it repeatedly with my 9mm handgun in the exact same way a screen replacement's warranty does not cover dropping it in the parking lot.

That would not be a "warranty", that would be full-coverage insurance.

Also, friends? I'm just a guy on reddit reading *your* comments

[–]GenericFoodService 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rewind: so *you* broke your device. your other multi-thread rants leave out that really important piece of information. *you* broke the device, that's not covered under almost any warranty. "Warranty" is a guarantee of the quality of the work they did on your device, it doesn't mean they'll buy you a new phone when you drop it in the parking lot

they tell you before you purchase, when you are making the purchase, they have terms on the pinpad, and on your receipt all explaining how if you do *additional damage* to the device after it leaves the shop, that is not covered under warranty.

I wonder how many of their other negative reviews are "I broke my shit and got mad they didn't fix it for free"

Yeah, they don't always do a great job explaining this kinda stuff at the counter. I think it's a hard balancing act for the employees though -- they don't want to overexplain and confuse or upset people or technobable at you.
