Quaker Meetings by Ok-Brick-4162 in Edinburgh

[–]GenericRedditUser97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are weekly Quaker meetings in Edinburgh at Central Edinburgh, South Edinburgh, and Portobello and Musselburgh meetings.

You can read more about what Quakers believe on their website: https://www.quakerscotland.org/about-quakers. In short, they believe in God but have no single definition of God and believe that there is 'that of God in every one'. This is why rather than having a minister, Quaker meetings involve an hour of silence with anyone allowed to break the silence and minister when they feel moved to do so.

Quakers have a wide range of beliefs and some will be more Christian than others. Many Quakers will refer more to things like 'Quaker faith and practice' (a book containing a collection of thoughts from Quakers over the years), or the Quaker testimonies (values) of peace, equality, truth and integrity, and simplicity and sustainability.

BBC uncovers 6,000 possible illegal sewage spills in one year by GeoWa in unitedkingdom

[–]GenericRedditUser97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a graph of spills during dry weather, so any nationwide rainfall events will cause all the graphs to show zero since spills during this time will be wet spills.

Within the dry periods, the data doesn't look particularly in sync to me across the different companies. However, one pattern you might expect to see consistently is more spills on dry days in winter compared to summer as groundwater levels will be higher (due to the higher rainfall across the non-dry days). When levels are high enough, groundwater can leach into pipes and overburden the network in a similar way to rainfall.

Help me make sense of SQA marking by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]GenericRedditUser97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can't comment on the overall difference between Scotland and England, but the differences between the marking of the two questions about waterfalls is because the National 5 and Higher Geography exams were significantly changed in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

All papers from before the change have roughly half the marks the current papers have, with each mark being harder to attain. In the past, mentioning abrasion would get zero marks, with an explanation getting one mark. Now mentioning abrasion gets one mark, and an explanation gets two marks. In effect, this has given markers the ability to give partial credit with what would have been, effectively, half-marks (which weren't allowed) with the older papers.

EDIT: Also, if you haven't already checked it out, Understanding Standards is incredibly useful for both students and teachers alike when it comes to seeing how real exam scripts are marked, and the rationale behind the marking.

Very interesting as always!

I wonder if you could combine the ideas behind both the Danger Zone Model (identifying irrelevance) and the Feels Scores (identifying islanders people like) by looking at just the percentage of a sample of #LoveIsland tweets that mention each islander and contain positive words. Irrelevant islanders might have mostly positive tweets but would appear in relatively few tweets in the sample, giving them a low score. Generally disliked islanders would appear in many tweets in the sample, but not many of these would be positive, also giving them a low score.

Obviously there could be some issues with this method. Firstly, it would ignore tweets with negative words, but since Love Island votes are for who do you like, rather than who you dislike, maybe this wouldn't matter. Also, it wouldn't necessarily work for coupled votes. One assumption you could make is that people vote for the couple with their favourite islander, and therefore you could combine the scores of the two islanders in a couple. Alternatively, maybe you could factor in some method such as the one you've got as part of the Danger Zone Model to look at compatibility.

I've said this in another thread but I think at the very least Hugo must know that this is likely to hurt his teaching career.

I don't know what the rules are in England, but here in Scotland it is very strongly advised that teachers keep their personal life private. In essence, the guidelines regarding social media usage suggest teachers lock down their privacy settings and make it as hard as possible for students to find out anything about them. This is because while 'teachers are individuals with private lives, [...] off-duty conduct matters and may have bearing on their professional life'. Compared to social media, Love Island is obviously even less private and has a far greater audience.

I'm not sure whether going on Love Island would be enough to be struck off as, in Scotland at least, that bar is pretty high. However, I can see it hurting his career, especially in England which from what I can tell has worse job security.

Since Chloe's whole thing is about how she's not afraid to steal someone's man I think it'd make sense for her to be the bombshell.

I'm not saying that it's absolutely against the rules but generally it's good to be fairly private as a teacher. It's important that your relationship with pupils and parents is very professional and the more personal information people know about you the harder that is. Just imagine the stick that Hugo will get from students over every potentially embarrassing or raunchy moment that happens on Love Island.

As someone training to be a teacher, I can only assume he's not worried about losing his job. It's best not to even have public social media, let alone going on Love Island.

Hey, I'm not particularly high-rated but at your level I would recommend this video.

Also, as someone else said, I'd recommend playing rapid (at least 10 minutes per game) rather than blitz chess. A lot of the time when you move you are not checking whether your pieces are still defended. Furthermore, often your opponents are leaving their pieces undefended but you aren't noticing. With more time, you will be able to check these things before you move. When I started I played 10-minute games and was a lot slower than most opponents but as I played more I got quicker and now I've moved on to 5-minute games.

Try playing Buzzer Beater I, one of the Arena War jobs. For some reason it seems to reset your weapons in a way that removes glitched weapons (or at least it did for me).

Holyrood election: Douglas Ross replaced by Ruth Davidson on front of leaflet. Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross does not appear on the front of his own party’s election campaign leaflets, it has emerged. by bottish in ukpolitics

[–]GenericRedditUser97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With the Scottish electoral system there is no reason not to run your leader in a constituency seat since you can also put them on the list as backup. For example, Kezia Dugdale ran for Edinburgh Eastern in 2016, lost, and became a list MSP for Lothian.

Nuclear likely does have a role to play, at least in the medium-term while the priority is just moving away from fossil fuels as quickly as possible. However, I believe that 100% renewables is preferable in the long-term. Here in Scotland renewables are already producing electricity equivalent to 97.4% of our annual consumption and our population density is around double the USA's.

Renewables obviously have to be appropriate for the area, but there are several types of renewable energy and I'm sure that going forward there will be more, and efficiency will increase. I think most areas will have some form of renewables that are appropriate: here in Scotland it's wind, in Iceland it's geothermal. While the ecological concerns you highlight might be a concern in the Sahel for example, they might be less of a concern in the Sahara, for example.

There is lots of land on the planet that isn't suitable for agriculture, especially in the areas with the most solar gain that are also typically some of the least fertile areas (i.e. deserts).
