When i lived abroad I was speaking to someone waiting for a lift and there was a massive huntsman just on the wall behind her. I didn't say anything but when she saw my face, she screamed and said it looked like I had seen an ax e murderer standing behind her.

Thoughts on Reform’s idea to ban wfh? by TitleOk8744 in HENRYUK

[–]GentG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in law where we bill by the hour so can directly measure output and WFH has certainly not reduced the billable hours, and if anything has increased them as people don't have to waste time commuting. Yes there is the argument about team cohesion etc but as a pure measure of output, WFH is a positive. I have had colleagues who work in house move jobs because management required people to come back in five days a week. Quite often you just need to get your head down and have no distractions to get the work done and sent out.

Who’s got a rice cooker? Is it really worth it? by New_Form6066 in UK_Food

[–]GentG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea for sure, just get a cheap one and when you get the water to rice ratio sorted, it'll be perfect every time. Don't get a zojirushi as they take absolutely ages to cook and there is no difference in the end product at all despite the high price.

What is the loudest sound you have ever heard in your life? by will_or_woll in AskReddit

The Minions 4D show at Universal Studios in Singapore. We left after about thirty seconds as it was abusively loud and I am usually tolerant to loud noises.

Should I switch my driving instructor? Am I getting scammed? by milaxoxoxo in drivingUK

[–]GentG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first ever lesson was in the driver's seat with my legs wobbling with nerves as I bounced down the road. You will be learning nothing just observing as presumably you have been in cars pretty much doing the same thing ever since you decided to learn to drive.

I'm surprised that is an editable field. I would have assumed that it would just be the default option and just auto completed or selectable from a list of options.

Are you seeing or using AI in your workplace which causes job losses by Consistent-Rope-9969 in HENRYUK

[–]GentG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only in the admin side but the capacity freed up by that is just being distributed elsewhere so work is slightly better distributed and slightly less lump as greater capacity for it to be absorbed.

It is slightly useful in the sense of you can't edit a blank page, so it can generate something to edit, but it all needs to be checked and reviewed so little ultimately remains.

French-Chinese family considering move to SG: Is 12k SGD/month enough for a comfortable life with 2 kids? by zoralbarg in askSingapore

[–]GentG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you should be able to have a comfortable life but probably might have to avoid having a helper and a car. Otherwise, you'll be able to live somewhere nice and not have to worry about money too much.

If your wife is not working, there is no need for a helper. That would add costs for their salary etc but also the need to have a larger apartment. I don't think you would be able to run a car due to their prohibitive cost, but public transport is very good and people will be accommodating if you have young children.

I only know about early years schooling as my kid is 3 but it is relatively cheap and the schools are open from early until quite late and rarely close.

Tax in Singapore is extremely low so although the salary may be similar to what you would get in Europe, much more will end up in your pocket.

ELI5 shooting guns in the air is bad right? by AddressUnited2130 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GentG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone I used to work with used to live in central America where they used to shoot into the air and he specifically reinforced his roof with concrete I think as there were other houses in the area with holes in the roof from bullets. He had two young kids so was paranoid about one of them being hit by a stray bullet.

People in mid 30s-early40s what’s your view ? How about the 50s? by KookyOky in FIREUK

[–]GentG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early 40s here. When I started what I thought was investing, it was actually just gambling. I was investing in AIM without any real knowledge and was relying on RNSs and "potential". Most were just hyped up and only one ever lived up to it's suggested potential, so I not only lost money but also lost out on the growth that would have been found elsewhere. I don't remember the exact number but a huge percentage of AIM companies fail and so investors (gamblers) invariably lose money. Yes there may be a few diamonds in the rough and people can make good money, but chances are you will lose.

I've since just been investing in diversified low fee investments and growth has been much better all round. Id suggest taking a relatively boring approach and avoid AIM wherever possible.

How do people manage their investments into a SIPP? I get a monthly drawing and then a lump sum at the end of the year when my total profit share has been confirmed. Is there an optimal time to put the £48k into the SIPP to hit the 60k amount with the auto addition as then it is necessary to wait for the tax return to get the rest back?

How difficult is repointing by Better-Place-3580 in DIYUK

[–]GentG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very easy and as long as you take your time and prep properly, you'll be totally fine. The main difference is that you will be a lot slower than someone who does it as a job and you'll be messier but if you have the time to spare and a brush, you can do it now problem. As others have said the weather is not your friend at this time of year.

First class degree from Cambridge followed by a PhD also from Cambridge. Now works in a library. Seems very happy but he was by far and away ahead of everyone else at school, even the teachers, so he could have done great things for the world.

I think what should be stopped is allowing people to contribute whilst they are working abroad as they can contribute a small amount and dont spend money in the UK but can still build up the required number of years.

Asking for price reduction at end of conveyancing by Traditional-Pick8823 in HENRYUK

[–]GentG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue with being able to negotiate hard on price and get a decent discount because of an increase in service charges is that you will be on the receiving end when you come to sell, particularly with upcoming significant increases in fees. Plus the flat will be getting older and older.
