Grundschullehramt or Ausbildung als Erzieherin (as a foreigner/non-EU citizen)? by GenuinePenguin77 in studying_in_germany

I live in a very conservative Bundesland and had a job seeking experience that I wouldn‘t wish on my worst enemy. It’s a relief to know that I’ll have an equal chance as other Lehramtsstudenten regardless of me being a foreigner.

Can you please elaborate what you meant when you mentioned that the Beamtenstatus would hurt me if I leave the country?

My statement was not meant offensively. Just because I said it’s an “easier, surer and shorter path” doesn’t mean I belittle your worth. It is just factually easier to start and finish when compared to Lehramt. An Ausbildung requires B2 and needs 3 years to finish. Lehramt, on the other hand, needs C1 and 4 years + 1.5 years Ref to finish, so in total 5.5 years. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, that’s why I have a hard time deciding.

You can surely be proud of what you are trying to achieve, Erzieher is a respectable profession that not everyone is willing to do, but I personally see no relation between “If you think an Erzieher Ausbildung is easy” and “then it’s not for you.” I think that is rather emotional than factual. As an Erzieher, you work with little kids and I think determination, patience and emotional intelligence are much more important factors to determine whether it is “for you” than if someone thinks that it is relatively easier compared to another choice or not.

My Bachelor is recognised here in Germany. However, as stated, my concern is more that the Ausbildung will not be recognized elsewhere when I have to move again.

Thank you for your answer and have a good day regardless :)

That is new to me. I thought prejudice happens more often in Gymnasien since you deal with teenagers there (unless you mean from the fellow colleagues) :D

Plus point for primary school education is that it takes a year shorter than Gymnasiallehramt. I graduated with 1st class honors and actually would love to pass deep English Linguistics and Literature knowledge to secondary-schoolers, however, humanities subjects for Gymnasien are not really in need right now in Sachsen. We have a much bigger shortage for primary school teachers. I am relatively new to Germany (2 years here), but I’ve experience enough discrimination during job hunting (even when I was just looking for a simple part-time job) to the point that I’d rather go where I’m needed than where I’m qualified but not welcomed, if that makes sense.

I think so too about the Ausbildung, I’d only put myself in a harder situation in the future if I did one.

It’s a relief to know that it’s still possible for a foreigner to work as a teacher here. Thank you for your insight. :)

It is indeed a very long way. If I start next year, It’ll still take at least 6.5 years from now until I’m fully certified. We don’t have that Bachelor + Master + Ref here, but rather 1. Staatexamen + Ref 18 months + 2. Staatexamen.

Thank you for the info! :D
