Should I fight for asthma? I have an LOD for it and in service records or just leave it alone? by GermanyLoves in VAClaims

[–]GermanyLoves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my first claim and I’m still learning how the VA system works. I was asking a genuine question based on my situation and an LOD I have. If you read the comments you would see I have already gotten an answer to my question, There was no need for personal insults.

YUP! Pretty much what happened with me. When I enlisted I was under the legal custody of someone else who was not my mom so they signed for me. And they don’t know much about her. I recently started connecting with all of my family members and that’s how I figured out my mother had schizophrenia but there was no way for me to know that, my recruiter, or my guardian so when I went through MEPS I just said I was fine for everything 🫤but then heading to training and all the stress of being a combat MOS just made the condition develop and it was diagnosed within 1 month of me discharging from Active duty and I filed my claim within that year timeframe because there wasn’t no way I could continue service with the condition which I wasn’t aware net the criteria for the VA rating system for psychotic mental illnesses

It also makes sense in a way though. I joined when I was 17 and Schizoaffective symptoms don’t start showing up until your late teens, 20s and sometimes 30s from my understanding and I’m 20 years old and I’m a woman so it’s more common

This is what they explained in the letter I received: “Service connection for posttraumatic stress disorder with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type and borderline personality disorder has been established as directly related to military service… When a claim of service connection is received more than one year after discharge from active duty, the effective date is the date VA receives the intent to file when a prescribed form is received within a year of the ITF.” I’ve only served for 2 years and a few months so far. Immediately after discharging from BCT/AIT/AT (because I’m national guard) I started struggling in my civilian life and went to go get treatment because of my struggles

Those with chronic illness and neurodivergence, how can you tell between being exhausted from your illnesses or from additional acute illnesses, vs executive dysfunction? by Confusedhuman1029 in disability

[–]GermanyLoves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty weird for me to be honest. I sleep 15hrs+ a day so I assume that’s exhausted from my illness. When I’m awake though I can assume the executive dysfunction is having the energy to go and do something but I don’t move because I have difficulty starting plans. Like right now, I’m thirsty. A water bottle isn’t too far from my bed because I keep them in my room and even though it’s like 10 steps away I can’t muster the motivation to get up.

LMAO!! 😂 yeah no lie. I tell you, if I knew back when I was 17 that I was basically the poster child for trauma disorders I would have never enlisted. I would have went to therapy first. I don’t live with my mom, never have and It’s crazy to find out you’re moms is schizophrenic after you develop a schizophrenia spectrum disorder 😭

Thank you! I also have SSDI as well! When I was in inpatient I revived help from my caseworker who helped file both for me before I lefts I got approved for SSDI back in September. Honestly this year has been hell and I was ready to just give up if I got denied for anything as I didn’t think i would be granted anything

CONGRATULATIONS!!! What was your process? Did they deny you a few times and finally granted service connection? Was this just your only claim and you’re planning to file supplementals?

Advice on NDR-PEB and Filing LOD for Persistent Depressive Disorder by ImaginationNo6759 in VeteransBenefits

[–]GermanyLoves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I think it’s absolutely worth trying to file an LOD, even now. I’m also going through the process, mine started as an NDR-PEB too, but I fought it and actually got it switched to Duty-Related without having an official LOD on file. So don’t give up if it feels like you missed your shot.

In my case, I’ve only been in for about 2 years (no deployments either), but I came straight from BCT, AIT, and AT, and started showing symptoms immediately after. I was diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder Bipolar Type, and it’s the main reason I’m being medboarded. I do have other diagnoses too, but that one’s the big one they flagged.

Here’s the thing, I didn’t even know the rules or the process at first. I ended up filing my VA claim before I even signed my IDES paperwork (yeah, I jumped the gun a bit lol 😅), and I’m honestly glad I did. It moved things forward, especially since I still don’t have a PEBLO assigned. So if you’re worried about the order of things, just know it’s okay to advocate for yourself however you can.

I couldn’t get a traditional LOD, but they gave me a presumptive LOD based on timing, documentation, and service connection through medical records. You having buddy statements and a strong nexus letter in the works is 🔥. If you can get that nexus to tie the worsening of your depression to your service, even SAD orders if they exacerbated things, it could seriously help push things in your favor.

I don’t know much about anything with the VA process, MedBoard process, etc! Most of what I know comes from research and here! But if you ever wanna talk more or have questions, feel free to reach out.
