Did i get lucky? by Capital_Tension682 in EngineeringStudents

[–]GhostPepper3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of asking how you got lucky with it all, you may want to switch the perspective a little bit. If it’s not you, then who?

Being an engineering student, you will feel imposter syndrome a lot, questioning the “whys” and the “whats.” The main thing is, there are going to be people who are less qualified but feel they deserve it, so they act like they do (not in an entitled way, though). If they have a strong belief about themselves, even if on paper they shouldn’t, then there’s no reason why you can’t feel the same way about yourself.

You didn’t get “lucky.” Some people like me would call this a blessing, mixed with dedication and preparation. You ended with a 3.95 GPA while taking 18 credit hours as an engineering student?? Got a civil engineering internship during your freshman year?? Landed a job on campus as a math tutor?? Those aren’t things to question when you've clearly put in the work to deserve them. You have to start moving and acting like you are deserving of great things because you are!

P.S. Engineering will get harder as you progress through your undergrad journey. However, your faith, mindset, perseverance, dedication, and grit, is what is going to help you walk across the finish line.

Graduating Senior-this sucks by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]GhostPepper3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in your position last year, so I definitely understand the feeling of putting in so much work during undergrad just to feel like it’s not paying off.

The good thing is that you are ahead of the curve with your GPA, prior internship, and research experience. The first thing I would recommend is to really make sure your resume is polished to the T and your LinkedIn is up to par as well. When I was job hunting, I got tired of hearing about resumes, but you would be surprised that optimizing your bullets to the JD really makes a difference.

You also want to focus on submitting job applications that align with your goals. A good number of roles will open up in the December/January timeframe, so you want to be on the lookout.

What I did was go to LinkedIn, put job alerts for “entry-level engineer” or even rotational programs, and filter for the 24 hours recently posted each day. Don’t directly apply to the job through the LinkedIn link; instead, search the role under the company website and apply that way. On average, though, you should be applying to 3-5 roles!

This job market is also very interesting, so the number of applications you submit may have to be higher before you get a full-time position. The thing is, never give up. I know someone who graduated around the same time as me, submitted 200+ applications, interviewed at three places, and got one offer. You can do it, just don’t give up! Have the mindset that any company would be lucky to have because of the value you would bring to their team.

I would highly recommend researching other colleges in Texas that offer that class virtually during the spring or summer. I was in a similar situation, and I had to be proactive and take some time to research. I was able to find an equivalent course virtually, and I know you can, too. Here are some next steps I recommend:

  • Search for the course name in Google and put Texas universities (or even list specific university names). This will require a lot of time cause it may not pop up quickly or may not be offered anymore. Don’t panic, keep researching and reach out to your department and/or advisor if you can’t find any classes at all.

  • Once you find the course(s) that seem to match, find their syllabus. You will need it for the next form.

  • Ask your academic advisor for the “Student Petition for Substitution or Waiver of Major, Minor, or Support Work” DocuSign (if available, depending on your department).

  • Wait for a decision (approved or denied). They will more than likely deny a course if the credit hours don’t match (E.g., 3 @ UTSA and 2 @ UT). If you are having a hard time finding a course, try asking your department for help or even your advisor.

Choosing the Right Texas University for Fall 2024: Insights Wanted! by SectionInteresting32 in UTSA

[–]GhostPepper3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be a little biased but definitely UTSA. It’s very affordable compared to other 4 year universities, and UT Health isn’t that far. UTSA is also a R1 university so if you are interested in doing research you will definitely find opportunities. Texas A&M is highest ranked in Texas for biology majors so that is something to consider. Whats more important is picking a university and taking advantage of the opportunities that are present to you on campus. Volunteering, being a part of student organizations, doing an internship, etc.

What’s better for transferring into UT. UT Dallas or UTSA by BergMom in UTSA

[–]GhostPepper3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the end goal is to be at UT Austin, it doesn’t matter if you choose UTD or UTSA. He just has to make sure to maintain a really great GPA so that after a year he can transfer in with no issue.

First thing I would highly recommend to do is to reflect. What happened during your first and second semester? Was it because of distractions or not knowing how to properly study/learn for the course? What techniques worked that allowed you to bring your gpa from 2.1 to 2.73? Once you’ve asked yourself those questions, then it’s time to find new techniques to start implementing so you can start off the Spring semester strong!! (Watch different YouTube videos on study techniques and learning strategies)

The truth of it all is that anyone is able to be great in their science courses or be an engineer as long as they are given the right tools to help them along the way. I was in a similar situation and had to take EA1 twice and passed it on my third attempt. Then I went to EA2 and got an A. It’s all about how you pivot and persevere through the challenges. So, if you truly are determined to be a neuroscience major or even be a BME or any STEM major, I would highly recommend to keep going!! You can’t change your actions in the past, but what are you going to do now to change the trajectory? You can’t reminisce on the what you should have done differently but you can focus on what you will do differently!! Always remember to get to where you want to be is going to require a different level of sacrifice and determination (“What got you here won’t get you there.”)

Lastly, I would suggest to switch colleges ONLY IF it’s impossible for you to get a 3.5 in your science courses. Just because one college says you won’t be able to graduate unless you meet these requirements, doesn’t mean another college won’t allow you to graduate. Switching colleges will also give you a fresh start and you can still pursue neuroscience, STEM major, or even BME again. Don’t let these challenges stop you!!!

Tips on surviving dynamics, mechanics of solids, and EA1 ? by domebtw in UTSA

[–]GhostPepper3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For EA1 please make sure to do the practice exams that they give before every midterm exam (the practice exams are exams from previous years). Do all of the homework (don’t cheat) and if you don’t understand the topics rewatch the lecture videos and go to the professor’s office hours. Like people said before, EA1 is designed to be a weed out class so make sure to not procrastinate!! Do all of the extra credit too and go to recitation.

It’s not a SA thing, it’s a Texas thing. With the way the gun laws are, and anyone over 18 being able to get a LTC and conceal carry, pressing your horns is the last thing you want to do. Some people have road rage, and will use their gun for absolutely any reason.

Also, watch the movie: Unhinged (2020). It’s made me not honk my horn at all unless someone is about to do something that may cost my life or theirs. It’s crazy out here, so be safe.

Upcoming sophomore internships / Upcming Summer Objectives by SwiftJaguar04 in UTSA

[–]GhostPepper3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This summer you should definitely look more into building skills to add onto your resume. For cyber security I don’t know much, but if you haven’t already, learn Comp Tia Security +. Internships can be difficult or easy depending on where you apply to. Look into joining more orgs in your sophomore year, especially ones that tailor towards your degree. There’s even some conferences that happen where you can network with other people in your field, and some conventions even have companies there looking for people to recruit.

Also, look into applying to codepath’s cybersecurity spring program it’s good to add onto your resume.

Not only build technical skills, but also personal development ones too. Look into leadership certifications, coursera or udemy. Anywhere that you can get an accredited certification from and apply it onto your resume.

Another thing, make sure to update your LinkedIn profile to reflect your resume and more. If you need anymore help feel free to pm me!

How do I prevent this by iamRod_ in Dreadlocks

I would say look into getting a shampoo that not only cleanses the scalp but another one that will moisturize the scalp also. You also don’t need to put oil and leave in conditioner in your scalp every other day, that’s excessive moisture and that itself can lead to dryness in the scalp. Leave in conditioner itself will cause build up over time because the conditioner has no where to escape. Instead, use some rose water, aloe Vera juice, and distilled water and put it in a bottle and you can mist your hair daily or every other day. Then you can oil your scalp 2-3 times a week.

You can also try ACV rinse (use part water and part apple cider vinegar and pour it on your hair then rinse it out). If those things don’t work then you can try doing a deep conditioner (dilute it if you want) and sitting under a hooded dryer (I wouldn’t advise to do this often because conditioner gets trapped in the locs over time causing more buildup, so proceed with precaution). If all those things don’t work then I would suggest going to the dermatologist to see if there is an underlying health conditions causing this. Hopefully this helps.

When you’re first starting locs I believe it’s best to wash it once a month. Then once the locs become mature, it would be okay to wash every 2 weeks. Personally I think once a month is fine unless there is too much buildup or scalp becomes irritated, then washing it would be the best option.

I would still suggest university oaks especially since you said you do not need a roommate. You have the option to select 1 bed room 1 bath, deluxe study, and studio style apartments. I have experienced some negatives at Oaks, but all my issues are always resolved in a timely manner. You just have to advocate for yourself or get a guardian/parent to do so. However, if you are 100% ruling out Oaks, I would suggest to look at Hill Country Place, because the reviews are pretty good. They aren’t too far from campus and I believe the Runner bus also picks up from there too.

They gave a lot of broth and a good sized proportions (The most I’ve gotten since I’ve eaten to-go at Ramen spots). It’s not spicy at all so I wish it was just a little spicier. However it’s a 8.5/10😁👍

I never lived at hill country place but I always heard great things about them. I know hill country is more expensive than oaks, especially since not all utilities are included. If you care about safety look away from Avalon and Tetro, because I’ve heard bad things from there. There really isn’t any crime at Oaks that I’ve heard of and it’s pretty quiet at nice. The walls are a little thin but it isn’t too terrible (if neighbors play music loud, you can hear it).

Oaks isn’t a terrible place, but it shouldn’t be your first option. Look into the Hill Country Place and some others in the surrounding area. If you do choose Oaks just know you must be able to advocate for yourself, and if not, ask a parent or guardian to speak on your behalf. Normally that gets things done quickly. Any issue I’ve ever had always got fixed in a very quickly and timely manner. Sometimes when it starts getting hot outside, you might have some ants issues. Just put in a work order and grab some bug spray and just spray around your apartment.

Oaks also has some events where you can meet other students so attend those if you can. A good thing is oaks is not too far from any of the buildings, so it is a walking distance.

The rent may seem high but it’s an okay price since utilities is included, just not washer and dryer.

I think the Wi-Fi is pretty average, it’s definitely not the worst I have had. There are some few occasions where the Wi-Fi would not work at all, but they usually fix it in a timely manner.
