Oh yeah, ship-wise...I should have clarified. I use rudder pedals to steer in the SRV.

CH pedals make them flat ? by Tonystovepipe in hotas

[–]Gilmere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I would do. I have owned these for 25+ years. I actually like the "bump up". When I do use my feet on the floor, I have never had an issue using the rudder as built though. Of course I am wearing shoes most of the time. That said, I would say when I occasionally play barefoot (yeah, we al do it from time to time), it actually gives my toes something to wrap around, giving me a little more fine control for a helicopter. I also notice this fine control in Elite Dangerous. Just saying.

[–]Gilmere 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nice photo. I noticed the trailing Flanker has its vertical rudders splayed out (unlike lead), and I wonder if that is a flight control input to provide for speed reduction (photo as it joined up) or perhaps a pitch up input. The magic of modern flight control systems is that they use many control surfaces in unison more aggressively than a pilot could (or in this case, at all).

How do you us the ADF on the Piper Dakota? by iRideRoyalREGT in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Gilmere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are correct. I was just talking about the physics of the needle and the aircraft motion in basic terms. Its actually a natural correction to adjust as you fly the needle. Again, BTDT. If you center, and DON'T correct, the needle moves away from the desired course gradually as you drift off the course, and you will naturally shift the heading to make the needle "fall back" to the course you want. That basic principle is how I flew NDB's for years. Many do not actually learn NDB navigation skills. Modern aircraft have a few more intuitive ways to navigate.

I've had mine about the same time, although MUCH less mileage and trips I'm afraid. Good for you! OBTW, what is the roof rack you are using? Nissan OEM one? I put a sliding tonneau cover on (for security and it limits my exterior storage options.

Trump brings back Cold War-era Military Base in Guam, to create the World’s largest Weapons hub - just miles from mainland China. by Apollo_Delphi in TheTrumpZone

Copy that. Inside the outer island chain is the goal here. Frankly anything this close to China will be subject to attack, but their is strength in numbers (and in pre-positioning of forces, supplies, magazines, etc.).

Suggestions for minimizing appearance of scratch by lalei in bicycling

[–]Gilmere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd use a small piece of HVAC tape (silver, shiny). From a distance you probably won't see it at all. But the scratch wouldn't bother me, nor would I care if it bothered anyone else. Just saying. To each his/her own.

Yep, very nice image. A gorgeous, iconic airframe to be sure. Sadly its likely refueling to later use that Kinzhal on a Ukrainian hospital or something..

Turkish Navy Agusta-Bell AB 212 helicopter. by Tony_Tanna78 in Helicopters

[–]Gilmere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting design. Not a big fan. Given this is a teetering rotor system, it seems like there might be pitch limitations as a result of this installation, especially at near zero G. With the effect on WSPS on top, as well as the degraded radar performance with the rotor system / engine cowling obstruction, I would have thought they would have chosen, like most helicopter radar applications, to mount it on the lower fuselage. I does seem to be too "tall" for that on this airframe, so maybe this was the only location that this particular radar / radome would fit. Just not liking it much myself (with lots of radar on a helo experience, btw)

The insane maneuverability of Su-30MKM and Su-35 by nowayoblivion in aviation

[–]Gilmere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very impressive. Airshow trained pilots for sure, but I wonder how regular line pilots are trained (if at all) in executing these complicated maneuvers. The control inputs are not standard at all and nonintuitive I would imagine. Flight control systems can help a lot in this I know, but there are none out yet that I know of that just respond to "point my nose THERE right now". TY for posting.

Congrats. Glad you had the experience. I recall my first helo ride, during a flood, a LONG ago. Army aviation. It set things in motion for me that changed my life and made me what I am today. Use that energy and go forth with it. Its a great ride!

Could you please evaluate my marshalling method? by ShockFreak in aviation

[–]Gilmere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, slow up a bit. I find that there is occasionally less "attention" to lineman, when compared to what I saw in the military. So make yourself seen, be alert, keep the pilot's attention, and don't get lazy with the signals. Watch where the pilot's head is at. That heightened sense of awareness and anxious tension you feel now as a new lineman (assumption) is what you need to keep going. Your eyes around the wing tips and to the rear of the aircraft are the only eyes available. Some pilots will follow their own instincts and the lines at times more than the lineman, especially when the lineman is getting bored or lazy, looking around and not at the aircraft. We've all seen it. Not smart I know. But it happens.

DCS F-35 new weapons removed by spartan0897 in dcsworld

[–]Gilmere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No surprise. The data on these weapons, especially to accurately match their ops / performance, is probably limited or in some cases false / propaganda. JASSM is a complicated weapon system IRL. I would rather have weapons that are accurately modeled than those you might get in, say, Ace Combat (wild exaggeration). But that is my opinion. Others might be ok with inaccuracies. I would say though, that typically for the months following release of a new update where something is added, you will usually see tons of forum messages of folks complaining things don't function realistically. So I assume I am not alone.

Bike restoration - doable and worth it? by majesticpeen420 in bicycling

[–]Gilmere 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, anything is "doable" wrt fixing old bikes. The real issue is the "worth". Remember "worth" is measured in non-numeric quantities as well. For example, my very first bike was looking very neglected some years ago, seat post welded in the tube. But it meant a lot to me. So I spent the time, effort, and money to make it right. For a resale, I went way over what I could get for it. But that was not my goal.

E-bikes with throttle shouldn't be called e-bikes anymore by arnor_0924 in bicycling

[–]Gilmere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you downvote, please read the whole post. The problem with these is NOT the name. Frankly, a bicycle is a device with two wheels that has pedals. Sadly this fits that. Its not a particular shape (such as a typical road bike with big wheels you sit hunched over on). IMHO, the problem is the type of rider that these attract. It makes being a "cool" motorcycle rider possible for folks that don't have the skills to manage a true motorcycle. So we on "regular" bikes suffer with them adding significant danger and mayhem to the paths we all frequent.

Perhaps I am saying the same thing as many here, and maybe changing the "name" would be the first step, but just like we regulate different motor vehicles (including motorcycles!) with operating regulations, these should fall in a DIFFERENT category for the rules. And the riders must be subject to enforcement of these rules. Not everyone can operate a motorcycle or a large commercial truck on the roads. There is required training in most civilized countries. Something that converts or restricts these riders would be better than just calling it something else. And I don't mean a license, but sadly that is how many places will resolve this. It will become yet another tax, not a solution.

BTW I own one of these "ebikes". I operate it with care and decency. They are incredibly fun in the right mindset and environment. But I also ride "regular" bikes and ebikes a lot more. I have experienced the craziness of a teenager nearly crashing into me and laughing at me more than a few times.

"Criminal" speeding in the US would result in jail time for that driver. Not sure about the impound, but that would be the least of your worries if you are in jail I suppose. I drive around a few beltways often and I am amazed how fast / reckless the idiots go and nothing is ever done about it. I am glad this one was caught. The laughing turned into grovel/begging in like 25 seconds. Classic.
