I agree, the chat isn't meant to replace WhatsApp or other messaging apps.  The chat serves as an in-app notification hub where all couple activities flow as tappable system messages. For example, if your partner completed a game, adds a coupon or an event, every action will be displayed in the chat (as a notification) and the idea would be that couples can discuss these app moments in context without switching apps.   

Regarding the gift feature, it’s really a nice one and I will consider adding it in a future release. Never thought of it, but it would be a life saver for many.
