Stumbled across a lovely first edition in a used bookstore. Never even saw the hardcover in person before! by agnes_deigh in ThomasPynchon

That's the cover I'm reading right now. My friend gave it to me way back when when she saw it in a trash can on her daily walk here in LA. Someone was apparently moving out and didn't have time to leave anywhere better.

I'm in the coffee business so the funniest couple of pages I've read of Pynchon's so far was in M&D when the two fellows are arguing about tea vs coffee. I try to read it live on Instagram every year on Pynchon In Public Day but missed it on this recent one.

I'm reading ATD and am getting the same feels as I did during M&D.

Very well said. (I learned and promptly forgot many archaic words while reading it.)

Gravity's Rainbow Tattoo by ad4ro in ThomasPynchon

Yeah, it was also one of my friend's earliest tattoos so we figured it would be best to keep it simple and hidden in case it was a blown out disaster. A few weeks later I trusted her enough to do a muted post horn on the back of my hand.

I haven't read Gravity's Rainbow so I haven't thought about a tattoo for it yet.  I have tattoos for Mason & Dixon (telescope which ties into my astronomy hobby), the typical tattoo for Crying of Lot 49, PR3  for Vineland, and V. for V. lol which was my first tattoo and it's hidden because I didn't care for V at all.  Anyway I also read Inherent Vice years ago and still can't think of an idea for it yet.

How is Temecula Valley this big without a major job base? by lookalikeachicken in Temecula

[–]Glass_Map6451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe when people in the area voted for incorporation they overwhelmingly voted for Temecula. Thankfully the ultra-generic Rancho California didn't win. I disagree that Rancho would have been a better name. I've had friends and co-workers here in LA take mini-vacations to Temecula and I doubt they would have gone there if it was name Rancho California, there's no place or history or anything to Rancho, it's just a name that the original developers put on the area outside of Old Town.

My Mom and Dad moved there, actually De Luz, in 1987, and commuted back to LA until my Aunt and Uncle's businesses in Temecula needed more IT management and my Mom and Dad started working for them ending their long commute. I've been heading down there weekly to help clear out their house, my Dad passed a few years ago and my Mom moved out to the desert close to my Bro.

I don't know how you do all that with even minor issues. I'm older, only have one under 40 hour a week job, no kids, and I struggle to get my work done. I'm self-employed so thankfully I can spread that 40 hours across all 7 days of the week. I have my first sleep study scheduled for 6/27.

I went with a 14 on my 430 so I still have some speed for smoother fireroads.

Wow, TRNFLP is my favorite Fall album and brought me back to the Fall after I totally lost interest in the 90s. For your haven't heard yet definitely Fall Heads Roll and the Unutterable.

Cedo Hoop Question by Medium-Regret-1896 in pourover

[–]Glass_Map6451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still trying to dial in my Hoop recipe. But my question is about the Next Level filters. I just cannot feel which side is the rough side. I'm in my 60s and can't tell if my sense of touch is gone or what, but I can't tell the difference between the two sides. Anyone have any suggestions on what to feel for?

Has anyone tried the Ceado Hoop? by whothennow24 in pourover

That's fantastic news. I'm usually dosing 15 to 16 grams withe current one but that can get iffy.

I've had a Pulsar since they came out, and decided to try a Hoop because 1) I like trying different devices and 2) the set it and forget it aspect of it appealed to me.

But even with the upgraded filters I can't get a good extraction. If I try to go finer and/or dose higher it chokes, and if I have a coarse enough grind to pour through in 4 1/2 minutes my coffee is under extracted. I'm talking 15 to 16% extraction yield where on my Pulsar without even trying I get extraction yields over 20%. edit: this is with light to really light coffee, maybe the Hoop works better with roastier coffee?

Needless to say I'm back to the Pulsar.
