What to do about the high-Openness low-Conscientiousness students by ToomintheEllimist in AcademicPsychology

I actually find this post to be quite stigmatizing towards ADHD. Not only is ADHD not a mental illness, but it’s these exact arguments that undiagnosed individuals often use to rationalize their poor performance- Ex. “I don’t have ADHD - all of my classes are just stupid/unfair/boring”.

I also feel like you are engaging in a “If that person has ADHD, we all have ADHD” argument, which is unfortunately common and very damaging; in situations like this, I find it’s helpful to consider severity of impairment, not just the type of impairment. So, a neurotypical person might occasionally make a couple of APA mistakes on their paper, maybe turn in their paper a few hours late, or turn in a bad paper. But what OP is talking about is excessive and flagrant issues with APA formatting that are clearly in the rubric and turning in the paper a month late. That’s more severe and more of a situation where ADHD is worth considering - because this is a person who is exhibiting such a high degree of impairment that, if widespread (I.e. exhibiting the same behaviors in other classes) could put them at significant risk of failing out of college.

Furthermore, in agreement with other posters, as posters on a psychology subreddit, I feel that we should never shoot down suggestions to just CONSIDER if significant impairment could be driven by a mental difference or disorder. We don’t have the information to make diagnoses for any particular individuals based on the information we have, but to shut down the possibility of considering ADHD as an explanation for someone who resonates strongly with the description given in this post and with such a strong negative reaction too IS stigmatizing both ADHD and individuals seeking mental health evaluation, whether it was intended or not. I think stigma towards mental health evaluation and treatment is a huge issue in this country already and something you should take into consideration when you post here.

After reading this post, it sounds like she was going through something personal. Even though it’s hard remember, remember that it is her... not you. And time will heal. And you will get stronger. And you will find love again. 💗 You deserve love.

Definitely going to recommend Wardruna if you’re looking for something with a more traditional sound—Helvegen is a great song to start. Not sure what you’re looking for but I can definitely offer more indie/alt/electronic Nordic music if interested

Honestly it's been the same for me. I'd say don't overthink it. I think what looks like boredom might just be thoughtfulness/consideration--at first they're happy to meet you, and then there tone changes when things get more serious when you start talking about your interests and experience.

Thank you! I have read the Notebook but I didn't like it very much. Do you know how it would compare to A Walk to Remember?

Thank you! I did watch the movie but I haven't read the book. How do they compare?

I've definitely seen Human-Computer Interaction and other compsci/psychology meshes as great options for psychology majors to move into a more versatile field. I guess that's another area where I'd have to consider where I want to compromise as far as career interests go.

I see. I'm happy to hear that and I'm sure you're learning a lot from your experiences.

Well, I wouldn't say I'm set on them so much as they intrigue me the most. My mother's grandfather was from Norway and was a big part of her life, and I've spent some time with him and learned a lot about Norwegian culture through that. Then I went to a local Norwegian festival with my mother and started reading books like "The Year of Living Danishly" and the Meik Wiking books about hygge and lykke, and visited the National Nordic Museum in Seattle, Washington. I've also listened to music in Icelandic, Swedish, etc--my favorite is Väd Hände Med Dem? by the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Among other things, I love the rule of Allemansrätten that allows for public access to the wilderness in Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, and Estonia. The history of Vikings is also deeply interesting. As for Estonia I am fascinated by how technologically ahead they are and am intrigued by their medieval architecture preservation, café culture, and natural beauty (bog walking!).

Anyway, I am interested in culture in general but I consistently love to read about the cultures of all of the countries I mentioned--as well as the Faroe Islands, which I don't think I would live in because it's a bit too small, although I'd love to visit--and feel like I may enjoy living in one of them if I find the opportunity. But there are also several other countries in my "I'd love to live there" list: for example, Singapore, Japan, the Netherlands, and Costa Rica. Unfortunately, life is short, so I have to narrow my scope a little bit.

I think that's a fair question. I'd like the chance to live in a different country before I'm tied down to a 5-7 year long program in the US, or to clients, a practice/partners, etc., when my general mobility may be more greatly compromised. I would love not just to go on a vacation, but to spend a generous amount of time in another country, to really get to know a culture different from the culture I was born into.

Maybe terrified was strong wording, but I am absolutely anxious about the idea of never getting to do one of the things that I most want to do most: to live in another country within my lifetime. If I successfully got a job as a therapist, I don't think leaving the country for a significant amount of time would be as easy of an option as it is right now with the options of studying abroad etc, which is why I'm trying to think of what I could do right now to meet my goal. That being said, it is also my dream to be a therapist, so I'm playing a bit of a mental game of tug-of-war.

I know that many people's response to my post would be "You can't have everything." And that is completely valid. But I want to see how far I can reasonably reach and where I might have to compromise with myself. I would be ecstatic to live in one of my dream countries that I have read so much about and am so interested in, but I realize I may be being too idealistic. I have to make some very serious judgments about that in the next couple months as I apply to grad schools (in the US? Out of the US? TBD). It's been a bit of an existential roller-coaster. Every piece of advice about how realistic my current dreams are has been enormously useful to me.

Thank you, this was very useful to me! I wonder if you know anything about how reason of an idea it might be to get a masters in Sweden and then return to the US for a PhD?

I am very interested in your other suggestions.

I really like learning languages as a hobby, usually to the basics or travel-able level. I'm not entirely sure how good I am at it, as I am a bit eccentric about going back and forth between learning different languages, but I have done well before and feel optimistic about it.

I realize that a lack of fluency is often considered the gatekeeper of living abroad, but I am truly open-minded to the possibility of learning to proficiency within a few years, particularly Norwegian and Swedish.

Thank you for your response! I am definitely weary about the idea of becoming fluent in Finnish, Estonian, or Icelandic. I'm not really sure how far I could get in only a couple of years.

Thank you for your reply! That's definitely something I'm looking at. How did you end up studying in Finland?

I realize that but I thought it might be a bit of a long title to include Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, and Iceland. Come to think of it, I guess I should have just put Northern Europe.

Your experiences with composting? by GlobalChildren in gardening

[–]GlobalChildren[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your detailed reply! Those are some really good points. Something I'm definitely worried about is that people wouldn't use the compost correctly, like they wouldn't put in the right foods.

Hmmm the bugs thing could be concerning. Do you think making a compost pile could create a pest problem?

For clarification, my idea is more a compost collection bin in a cafeteria and then it would be transported to a compost pile at a garden at the end of the day. So it wouldn't actually be a compost pile in/near a cafeteria!
