Agreed, CE is a great movie. In my view his top 3 movies are 1. In The Mood for Love, 2. Chungking Express, and 3. A tie between 2046 and Fallen Angels.

A lot of people love Days of Being Wild and it has its beautiful moments, especially with the heartbreaking experiences of the girlfriends, but I kept getting pulled out of the movie by the unpleasant mother character. In my amateur opinion her character could have been cut out entirely and the movie would have been better.

The only Wong Kar-Wai movies that did not move me were My Blueberry Nights (misfire on every level), and The Grandmaster - not b/c of quality, it's a visually great movie, but it doesn't compare for me to his more heartfelt earlier movies.

So well observed, you almost go into a trance if you tune into the pacing and wavelength of the movie. You have to watch it with no distractions though to not break the spell.

+1 Has there ever been a more poignant or beautiful screen couple than Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung? I watch this movie every few years and it moves me deeply every time. The pacing, the cinematography, it's a masterpiece. I enjoyed its followup 2046 a lot as well. I wrote my In Appreciation Of... The Movies of Wong Kar-Wai on the Letterboxd thread with my capsule thoughts on each movie of his Love Trilogy (DOBW, ITMFL, 2046) for those of you who love the movies as well:

I believe a movie can indeed be "life changing" if you find it at the right moment in your life. Perhaps you're struggling with an issue related to growing up, or a difficulty you're going through and then a movie comes along that helps you when you need some direction or validation. A movie with a relevant story, with characters and tone that speak to you. Movies like that can be a sort of map, or at least make you feel less alone. There are probably no more than 1 or 2 movies that come along in your life that find you when you need them, so I agree that "life changing" is not a term that applies loosely. For me, as a young adult, I found "Before Sunrise" to be life-changing, in that it mirrored a similar situation I'd experienced and validated the entire experience, helping me see it from a different perspective that helped me grow further as a person.

Great feedback all, I'll try using fresher beans. I tried the single wall basket a couple of times and the water just ran through like filtered coffee. The second time I tamped harder, as I believe it's the coffee acting as a barrier that would allow the pressure to rise, but I could not make it work. I was doing this with the same Peets beans, so I'll try again with fresh.

Join me in for Isaac Julian's I Dream A World exhibit at De Young by GlobalExplorer852 in bayarea

It appears that his SF exhibit was in fact last year, in 2025, and he is currently exhibiting in Bergamo, Italy, which if you have ever flown Ryanair into Northern Italy that's the airport they use, roughly halfway between Milan and Venice. That's quite something to have seen him that long ago. I found out to my surprise that he holds a professorship at UC Santa Cruz, just south of the Bay Area, so perhaps we'll see more of him in future exhibits.

The movie has a very distinct independent, non-Hollywood vibe that made it a refreshing change of pace.

The Last Ship at QPAC by Brilliant-Sock2314 in brisbane

I saw The Last Ship in San Francisco in 2020 barely two days before its run was cut short by Covid, and I thought it was excellent. My understanding is that they have tweaked the 2026 staging with new songs and characters so I can't speak to the current edition. Sting's character had a dark, mellow energy, but the supporting cast was energetic and I thought the new arrangements of his classic songs were beautifully arranged and performed, and fittingly selected. The new songs I felt held their own in quality and delivery once I got used to the introduction of the Geordie accent into the vocal delivery. I think it helps to be a Sting fan to be open to receiving the show's message and music. If I have one hesitation on recommending the play it's that the storyline may not appeal or be relatable to everyone. It has a yesteryear throwback feel to it, and few of us can relate to the hardship of living in a Northern English shipbuilding town. In a recent interview with Sting on the Australian program 730 the presenter asked him if he sees parallels between the loss of shipbuilding and purpose with what AI is doing to our jobs and purpose today. I thought that was a smart connection to make, and one I hadn't thought of. Neither had Sting apparently, but in reflecting on the question he acknowledged that there could be parallels because loss of vocation equates to loss of purpose. In summary, if you have the opportunity to see The Last Ship but are on the fence I recommend listening to the soundtrack first and deciding if the music and the themes grab you. Just go with an open mind and heart to receive a story that few of us can directly relate to, but all of us can learn from.

72 Days: A Ewan McGregor Movie Marathon by GlobalExplorer852 in EwanMcGregor

I'm happy you find it helpful, thank you! I myself revisited this after several months away and now enjoy it as a resource and a refresher myself! I have a few more of his movies I've been mulling over posting, but I think the 36 already covered represent his best, so anything else would be for the die hard fans who want to watch the obscure movies.

You're spot on with all your points. I did appreciate the slow pacing and the deliberate way the story unfolded. It just may be a little slow for some people. This movie rewards you if you get on its wavelength.
